That way when they see me, they'll actualy be relieved that I look *better* than how I represented myself.

Of course getting that first date is still a problem...

Quoting the HuffPo article (Opposing Views is as much a shameless thief as the Gawker network):

According to Avalos' lawyer, these phony accounts are easily preventable with the right software, ABC News reports. The Post notes the plaintiffs are seeking a court to mandate Match.com monitor international IP addresses to prevent international users from creating domestic accounts.
There are many things match.com could do if they were out to match people instead of make money from people. Forcing foreign users to find proxies is probably not in the top five.

I need to send this article to a friend who is in the process of a divorce.

Se recently contacted a guy on a dating site that is a "model" and living in the Philippines. She is a ok looking girl but without being too harsh, he is about 10 years younger than her and WAY out of her league.

Somehow she does not understand that she might be being misled a little. She is generally a bright girl but the divorce has helped her make some less than intelligent decisions.

The last and only time I was on okcupid I got a message from a women whose pictures were of a variety of celebrities of different ages, hair colors, body shapes, etc.  Its like what spammers do:  create a profile that's so obviously fake that anyone who'd message back must be incredibly gullible.

It's not other people who are doing the scamming on those sites, while I'm sure some of that goes on, it's the sites themselves that do most of the scamming. They rope you in with a free account, which allows you to sign up and browse profiles, but you can't actually communicate with anyone until you pay a fee. What they do is, once you sign up, you'll start receiving messages from a dozen or so good looking women in your area, but you can't reply to them until you pay. Once you do, you never hear back form them. It's the classic scam all these sites use.

if you are dumb enough to respond to the person telling you to send $500 to a bank account in nigeria, or a money order to some internet cafe in singapore, I'd normally say it is a good way to thin out the gene pool.  The targeting of seniors, though: that is a hanging offense, in my book.  I've seen one guy back when I was working at kinkos, he was posting money and sending gifts to some chick in Vietnam.  He was constantly in there updating the paperwork, which kept getting sent back by the woman in Vietnam.  There was always something wrong.  I could tell he was being scammed, but he didn't want to hear it; he had the rest of his life mapped out with her; marriage, kids, the whole thing.  What he didn't realize is that while, yes, he did go meet the girl, he was one of about 40+ guys who met the girl, all of whom are sending her money and gifts, which her pimp is kindly "holding" for her, until she gets to the states, and what he didn't get was that the same pimp had about 20-40 girls going the same thing to hundreds of other guys, probably all over the world.

knew another guy who was sending money directly to Nigeria.  He came to my work to make copies of the woman's pictures, so he could keep one in his wallet, and have one on the nightstand in his bedroom.  He needed help with the resizing of the picture, and got to talking about his new wife-to-be.  It was a young picture of Whitney Houston.

I have to agree.  Had a lot of dates for the few months I was on Match, and more emails than I really had time to answer.  Shut it down when I just sort of burned out of going on new dates.  I would generally recommend it for dating-minded people.

I'm very unphotogenic, so I think I look better in person than in a picture. I think......who knows? Well, I can tell you one thing--when I start posting pictures on-line (rarely), they are very carefully chosen.

But full-body shots are fine. I'm skinny and in great shape. Ha. Yes, that's in the present.

so, she's single and needs a confidence boost?  Seems that's all I've been good for these last several relationships.  Get the girlfriend's thinking away from what her ex told her often enough to make her believe it; that she's morbidly obese, stupid, clueless and wasted without him.  When in fact she was pleasantly plump(I like the pear shaped women ... and carrot shaped, and apple, and string bean, and ...etc), or willowy and beautiful.  Intelligent and bright, and fun to hang out with, without the need to be drunk and/or high all the time.  GF number three with that set of symptoms just dumped me 2 days ago, so send her on over...  I even like kids.

/bitter? me?
//her kids loved me: I got an "I love you" from the littlest one after our first "meet the kids" play date

Thank you to Ric Romero and the spectacular coverage of the internet dating scene.  In all seriousness dating websites can be useful if treated like any other dating venue with a few key exceptions.  First, like any bar or club, a cover charge will make the clientele a little more exclusive.  Second, there are people who use them strictly for hookups, but there are also a lot of folks with intense if not demanding jobs looking for genuine relationships.  They may take time to respond.  Third, and a follow-up, you have to have patience to find the relationship even with the dating websites.  If you rush into things without trying to get to know the other person first then you are asking for trouble.  Communicate for more than an email or two and see if there is something more than a pretty picture behind the profile, even the best looking of us deteriorate physically with time but good conversation alongside solid chemistry can last a lifetime.  Use a little common sense along with meeting in very public places initially and it can work out well.  Trying to rush into things or using such websites simply for hookups is a little more dangerous, these are most of the people I get horror stories from.

Beware the funny angle shots.

Seriously people, post accurate photos. If you are deceptive, people will notice. I always felt a lot more put off by the fact that a girl was deceptive than that she wasn't as attractive as presented.

that's funny, i was on match for 6 months and didn't meet a single woman.  i sent out about 40-50 emails and got maybe 5 replies back.  none of them developed into an actual date.  and as disappointing and discouraging as that was, my eharmony experience was even worse.  whatever women are looking for when they date online, i apparently don't have it.
