Will they have actors offer to braid your hair or clean your ears for a quarter?  Cause that's what they did in the Bahamas when we were there.  Kinda sad, really.

When I worked at a certain WA software company back in the 90s they had an "Evening in New York City" themed holiday party, complete with champagne toasts, caviar, mocked-up New York skylines, and of course... actors portraying homeless people. It was a special night.

Is the dysentery and scurvy complimentary or is that only included on the "deluxe" package?

And the rich find a way to squeeze even a little bit more out of the poor.  Lovely.

Use shoe polish to feel like you're really black!

Afterward, we'll put you in the hold of a luxury cruise liner and pretend we're smuggling you to America where you'll live like a fake slave on a posh imitation plantation!

When my buddy found the nuka cola museum, he stole every single one and drank them all right outside. We laughed our asses off at the mental image of some random jackass breaking into your house, drinking 50+ bottles of coke, and then pissing on whatever passes for a lawn in the dc wasteland.

The hair I could understand...   but clean your ears?  Great, a quarter for a q-tip and an everlasting memory of incredible creepiness.

Add some tattoos, malt liquor breakfasts, and paper bags to huff paint and you got yourself a deal!

Ha! That is a pretty funny image. My guess would be astro turf at best.

Why not just save your money and ride through Johannesburg? Pretty sure you can see the real deal on the cheap. Just don't plan on keeping any valuables after the trip.

I am sure it will help the wealthy feel better about themselves.

Super 8 $39.99 a night and you get the same bugs.

Can we all just get together and blame capitalism?   it's not fair that some countries or people have things, while others don't.  Capitalism is clearly to blame for the existence of poverty and slums.  These countres obviously aren't taxing their rich people enough, because then their poor people would have cars and phones.

That's farked up. I got back from Haiti a couple weeks ago. On the way to where I was staying we stopped at the memorial/mass grave for the earthquake victims (estimated 50k bodies in the grave). Hadn't been there more than a minute and a little girl comes running down a trail from a shanty on the hillside above us to beg for money.
It's a farked up place. I wanna go back.

My nephew has been down there since the quakes, installing latrines, generators, and other rudimentary infrastructure.

When he gets back, any company would be stupid not to hire him.

He's learned how to make things happen with nothing.

The Harambi Street area in the Africa section of Disney's animal kingdom is sort of this.

They intentionally make it look decrepit, like tangles of electric wires up on the poles.

Same thing in the Asia area, but not quite so blatant.

If I was from that region, I'd be insulted.

I'm pretty sure most of the Haitians I met should qualify as some sort of genious. I saw guys stripping down engines on the side of the highway with no more than a crescent wrench, hammer, pliers, and a couple of sockets. The place I stayed was making water filters with all locally sourced materials other than the plastic tubing they had to bring in from Port. Place has no infrastructure other than a couple of decent roads. I want to go back. The folks I was with, two had been there 3 years and the other two had been there for 17 years.

You're not paying for real slums, you are paying for the appearance while still having servants around for mistreatment.  A real homeless person will stab you.

Out of the poor? No one who stays here is ever going to be poor or give a shiat about anyone other than themselves. They might give a little lip service to it, though.

Gizmodo sure does attract some people who are very, very passionate in white knighting for the poor. I'm sure the poor would rather have their money than their words, though.

/This "hotel" probably cost all of $10 and an afternoon to build.
//This will be a trend in the states by next year.
