sell the family heirloom.  brilliant.

That was great. Wow. The feeling to be told that sure, it could sell for 200k, and it goes for 1.5m? Has to be incredible

I wonder what made it so special as to go for so much. I checked eBay and they indeed get high bids but only in the low thousands. Coincidentally, I've got 2 Navajo blankets from my wife's grandmother---they're old but not sure the actual date. Anyone have any idea how to get a value on them?

Call the Auction house that this guy went through?

That was what I wanted to know too.  I figured that once it got to 1.5 mil, he was at least going to get a million.  After taxes and all, I'd imagine 600k or more in the bank.

Auction houses usually take 20%.  Gubmint takes 50%

So why can't he work? He lost a foot so every job is impossible apparently. Not sure why he gets a disability check.

He may have a skillset that is restrictive in combination with the injury. Also, even though employers aren't suppose to discriminate against people with disabilty you can bet they do. It is usually impossible to prove. All they have to say is they found someone who was a better fit for the position.

Nice story and I'm glad he found his lotto ticket so I don't have to support him anymore. Sheesh. It's terrible that he was injured but I cannot believe we have to pay for people that refuse to make the adjustment and move on to something else. It's not like he lost both arms. How is he supposedly poor and barely scraping buy but near obese?

Just out of curiosity, was that a beer the guy was drinking when he was checking out the rest of the artifacts? Kind of strange given the time and place as well as his other conditions.  But great story.  After commission and uncle sam that's at least a nice down payment on a decent house.

The full bid. The auction house takes a twenty percent buyer's premium which is why the bid of 1.5 million turns into the reported buying price of 1.8 million.

I was somewhat worried about its "provenance", given that it might have been stolen from Indians. From the auction description
http://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/11806800_a-navajo-chiefs-blanket -f irst-phase

... An important example of Native American textile art, the blanket arrives at auction from the collection of descendents of Norwegian immigrant Johan Tjentland, later known as John Chantland, who owned a dry goods store in Mayville, Dakota Territory. Chantland traded goods for the blanket in the 1870's.

But we don't know if he traded with a desperate Indian or whoever - the provenance stops there.

From there, such blankets were well established trade goods, (though that doesn't mean that some of the "trades" weren't forcible theft)

During the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the Navajo version of the Hopi bachelor blanket became popular among high-ranking members of the Ute Tribe, probably because the Utes were the Navajos' immediate neighbors to the north. By 1830, the Navajo chief's blanket was well established as a trade item throughout the west, southwest, northern plains, and upper Missouri Valley. The going rate for a Navajo chief's blanket was either one hundred buffalo hides, twenty horses, ten rifles, or five ounces of gold. Among high-ranking members of the Plains and Prairie tribes, including the Arapahoe, Assiniboine, Cheyenne, Comanche, Kiowa, Mandan, and Sioux, a Navajo chief's blanket was a form of currency. You could trade twenty horses for one chief's blanket, wear the blanket for a year, and then trade it for hides or rifles. Chief's blankets were expensive - by 1830, they were the most expensive garments in the world - but they held their value. If you were one of the leaders of your tribe, you owned a chief's blanket. It was during this period that the Navajo version of the Hopi bachelor blanket came to be known as a "chief's blanket." Due to their popularity among the Utes, chief's blankets with blue, brown and white stripes were called "Ute style blankets."

My point is that this guy had an accident that left him slightly physically disadvantaged and he doesn't work at all. No effort in re-educating himself and moving on. Again, I'm sorry he had to endure that but he just collects a check and complains that he can't get by so thank goodness he had that blanket to help him along. I don't want to pay for him anymore and am not sure why he gets a disability check.  If he gets it from a non-taxpayer funded source then more power to him but that does not appear to be the case. The gentleman in the video was taking advantage of the taxpayer. Not cool in my book. There are wounded veterans with more sever injuries that do pursue employment.  At least they earned a disability check. The fewer people like that we have to support, the more and better support we can provide to the truly needy. YMMV

/My complaint does not cover 100% of situational variables and is meant as a simple principle.

He may be collecting private disability insurance, or it might be through Social Security.  Either way, it's not coming out of anyone's pocket, it's insurance.  If you want your piece of that pie go ahead and crush your foot and you too can try to make it on $800/month.

You sure as hell aren't Canadian either.Guess you wouldn't want to see people get health care as well. Apparently OK with us all pitching in on your trillion dollar wars though, that, coincidentally, create guys with prosthetics. Oh, that's right, you don't want them to have their families taken care of either. Yep, you're in a category alright.

I'm all for taking care of the poor and disabled and for people getting healthcare. What I don't like is people jumping to ignorant conclusions without all the info. The story only highlighted his missing foot, he could have other more serious injuries that are not as obvious. I was just taking the piss out of angrymonday by saying he must be a republican since they don't want to help the poor or disabled because they think all those people are just lazy moochers same as angrymonday.

/Not Canadian

Quite an illogical leap. I have a trillion dollar war? You obviously missed the my other post about being able to take care of the truly needy if we didn't pay for moochers. Idiot.

Ok, to begin with: Good on you dude. Make that cash.

Now... tell my why this guy who has one leg can;t work a phone job or an office job in general.

Now maybe there is more to his disability then his leg. That is 100% possible. Thing is, going off the information provided in the video SPECIFICALLY MEANT to make me empathize with him, I don;t empathize with his disability. You do not need 2 legs to type on a computer and take phone calls, or even manage an office.

In case you manage to read this, I'll fill you in.  Disability checks are income based.  If he got a job that paid above a certain amount, the checks would stop.  He may not have been able to find work in this fine wonderful economy we have.  Losing the foot obviously took him out of his old job.
