The fact it's secret just shows how deep we're in it.

The fact is that no matter who we elect, that person has to pass muster with the hardliners.

Well, that's just super.

I enjoy the constant thread of "change = 100% change" "transparency = 100% transparency", etc. As if anyone REALLY thought they were going to make literally everything public.

We're not going to repeat the mistakes of the Church Commission.

They will make changes. They will be small but they will probably not tell us about them.

Seriously. "Hey, I know, let's let self-aggrandizing journalists that wish they were Jack Ryan know the operating procedures of our spy agencies! No one in other countries has Internet access, right?"

I don't need a list of CIA operatives in Pakistan, their addresses and their controllers.

It would be nice, however, if they told us they were going to stop this kind of shiat. And meant it.

Documents show the National Security Agency had been collecting telephone and email records on tens of millions of Americans ...

FTFA: On his first day in office, Obama offered a sweeping promise of transparency, issuing a number of executive actions to provide more openness at every level of the federal government and greater disclosure under the Freedom of Information Act.

I was not under the impression that this extended to clandestine national security operations. And I really can't believe anyone above the age of 8 (like the quoted sources) would have been either. Didn't anyone grow up during the Cold War?

I'm sure they'll up the level of bureaucracy such that people doing their regular, okay spying jobs can barely function anymore while the fringe dwellers continue without care or concern.

Actually, we would elect him again if it were allowed. But it sounds like you don't want a Presidential figure, you want a dictator who waves magic wands and makes the trains run on time.

Closing Gitmo - blocked by Congress
Out of Afghanistan? They asked us to stay. Bush broke it, blame Obama for having to fix it.
Keep you own health care plan? Naive of Obama to underestimate the greed of health insurance companies.
so maybe 1/3.

On the balance, those are a lot less weighty than

  "compassionate conservatism"
  "weapons of mass destruction"
  "mission accomplished"
  "education president"

coyo: "mission accomplished"

They had that on the ship to make the sailors feel good about themselves for THEIR mission accomplished, DUH!!! Stupid lib.

They just happened to break it out at the exact time the President was announcing the end of "major" combat operations, you silly goose.

It was a coincidence! Bug juice was served!

You're the one derping here, not me. There is no "man behind the curtain" and I sure as shiat ain't Dorothy.

Grow the fark up.

If you are reviewing spy programs you are going to have two choices 1) do it in public, for show, with just generalities and platitudes because you can't publicly go into any details for obvious reasons 2) do it in secret, which might then either be a whitewash that achieves nothing but no one will know, or it might actually lead to reforms in the programs. So doing it in secret really tells us very little except that it isn't being done as a blatantly pointless showpiece to appease the public/media in the short term. Whether anything beneficial will come out of it, who knows.

If I were a villainous government bureaucrat with a secret spy fiefdom to protect, I would look around and conclude that the vast majority of the people I'm spying on are concerned almost exclusively with tonight's episode of Dancing With the Stars, and ZOMG did you see Miley Cyrus on that awards show, and the Browns lost AGAIN, and I would conclude that 1) I can do pretty much anything I like, these people are so far gone that they won't even notice, and 2) man, what's the point, I mean, what am I going to find spying on all of these local boobs.
