I can get behind a lot of these but this:

11. No one should work in the dark. Again, Germany. The Country requires offices to have a view of the sky

is absurd.

My Take:

1: Meh, don't care either way
2: I'm definitely for raising the minimum wage, but I think doubling it out the gate is a little too much.  maybe start at $10/hour and slowing work your way up from there until it reaches a good standard of living.
3: I'm not really a fan of capping how much someone makes.  if they do a good job, or have a valuable skill, let them make as much as they can.  don't hinder their earning potential just because someone without those skill is making less.
4: Bull-shiat!  You want money, you need to work.  Sure, if you worked and got laid off, you can get yourself some unemployment insurance until you get another job, but just getting handed money?  fark that.
5: Every employer should offer some PTO and sick time.  A healthy, relaxed employee is much better for business.
6: I'm for registering those weapons and licensing the owner, but I'm not for banning them. Just because someone does stupid shiat with them, doesn't mean they should be banned.  Should we ban SUVs because people have used them to run over groups of pedestrians?
7: How about No?  If you want an education past High School, pay for it like an adult. Maybe the should be cheaper and the students loans definitely should be easier to pay off, but I don't think they should be free.
8: Why?  Who's to say what is art and what is not?  Does that mean I can sponge off the government for the rest of my life, as long as I paste some shiat together once every few months and call it "modern art"?
9: Why?  Why should the government dictate what a businesses board of directors should look like?
10: I know it's not the same, but isn't that what "Long term disability" is supposed to be for?  shiat like that?
11: What about people who don't work in offices?  Factory workers or warehouse workers?

1, 2, 7, 8, 10,  and 12, and I'm willing to pay more in taxes to support it.

//3 isn't necessary if you have a more progressive tax rate.

For this one in particular, yes. Traditionally, increasing the population (and thus workforce) is beneficial to the nation as a whole. See: Japan.

The rich!  Liberal utopia is defined as a system where the rich are required to keep paying for everything, even after all their money has been taken away.

I was going to make some comment about liberals ideas being genius, but this list has nothing really innovative in it. Space filler, really.

6. Assault weapons should be banned. After 35 people were murdered by a single man in Australia in the mid-1990s, the government banned shotguns and assault weapons, enacted stricter licensing rules and launched a number of gun buyback programs. Within roughly a decade, gun-related murders were down nearly 60 percent.

Ahem...

Study: Gun homicides, violence down sharply in past 20 years

I'll cut to the chase.  It's down 75%.  Keep farking that chicken though.

7: Yes.
8: No.  (On top of my main job, I'm also an artist/musician, so I'm not being a "haha artists are lossseerrs!" person here).
9: Yes.  Though so should everything.
10: I don't understand why cancer patients should get special treatment compared to everyone else?  If we mean sick people should be paid for when they are receiving treatment, yes.
11: This one is....possibly the dumbest one on the list.  Can't be much kinder than that.  Everyone should also have a unicorn and a Scarlett Johannsen clone.  Keep wishing.
12: That would be covered under vacation.  And as long as you keep it fair (as you seem to be trying to do with your other wishes), then, sure, as long as you give non-parents extra time off to watch you raise your kids, awesome!
13: Why?  (Honest question)
14: NO.  It must be encouraged.

Consider how much more the homicide rate would decrease if pistol grips and collapsing stocks on rifles were banned entirely.

Ultimately, not having kids is a decision that's bad for the country.  So it's in the country's best interest to create incentives for more children.  It's like biatching that people who don't attend college don't get access to student loans.

Didn't actually see any of that there.  Most of them, other places that are better off financially than we are are successfully doing them.  Though I agree that often "feel good ideas" are unfundable.

I think I'd rather just see a guaranteed minimum income that is paid to everyone, combined with a simple progressive income tax with the top bracket being somewhere between 50% and 80% (whatever it takes to make it deficit neutral); and no deductions of any kind. Gets rid of a ton of other separate programs and leaves people as free as possible to make decisions about how to spend their money.

Jumping Jesus on a pogo stick! Stop trying to ban military grade weapons; they are already illegal to own in the US if they were made after a certain date. Yes, you can own civilian versions; but, it's not like they are automatic or anything.

Also, 40 times as many people die from heart disease as die in gun related incidents. Just admit you don't like guns, cause they are big, black and scary.

2013-11-25 12:45:10 PM
I guess the listed countries don't have a significant portion of pretty much useless (prolly because of bad policies and sanctioned actions) people in their societies.  Otherwise, I don't see how you mandate so much paid time off and still have businesses that function.  I also don't see how you say "We're gonna just give you money for existing" without a lot of people saying "Screw it, I'm not going to work anymore."

2013-11-25 12:45:11 PM
Yes, Australia has a higher minimum wage, but you need to compare the minimum wage to the cost of living.  Last I heard things are more expensive in Australia than in the US.

I don't necessarily disagree with that statement either.  I don't think it's a binary argument.  A few of the ideas there are non-starters realistically, but most of them are reasonable and could be accomplished even in our setting, if people agreed on them, without much financial catastrophe.  The vacation one is certainly doable, though in reality we've already partially done that with our labor laws (to a lesser extent).

Then again, I've always advocated for more vacation for everyone, because it gets the incompetent people out of the office more, more work gets done, we make more money, and everyone is happier.

Pot: yes, legal
Min wage: OK, but be careful what you wish for. I really don't think this one has "no downside"
Max pay rate: I think this would be interesting to experiment with
Guns: OK, but I really don't think it will stop there.
Public University:  Not disagreeing, but who pays the folks working there?
The rest: Whatever

1) Legalize and tax the hell out of it
2) Yay even more jobs will be replaced with robots.  And inflation would be killer.
3) Why should we have government penalize people who can actually run a company?
4) For the love of god no.  I'm not having my taxes subsidize people's drug habits more than they already do.
5) No, for the same reason as #4.  I am however in favor of increasing standard vacation hours for full-time employees.  Two weeks for most positions starting out is piddly and burns people out.
6) Only guns that should be banned are fully automatic guns and explosives.
7) Free? No.  Reformed? Yes.
8) What about the rest of us? No thanks.
9) Yay we can have more binders full of women.
10) Generally OK with this but why just cancer?
11) Derp
12) Sounds like even more excuse for lazy people to squirt out kids to get government benefits
13) Yes!

3. Systematically ignore the reality of life, and the laws of economics and mathematics; "Any bad stuff ever go down in Afghanistan? No? Good, let's roll!"

4. Rudely denounce anyone who disagrees as a mean--spirited heartless slob. Why do you hate freedom and liberty and America, any way? Do you want the terrorists to win?
