Well yea, when you spend 7 months of the year hiding indoors from the miserable weather, what else can you do but make babies?

I think all the laughing keeps you younger. When you're watching Ford clips on the Daily Show it's a great workout.

Despite the crackhead mayor this is very very true. Lots of work for the youngfolk (although you need to be able to hold down multiple jobs and be willing to work erratic hours unless you are a professional). TONS of great music and art (unfortunately very little of it escapes TO for some bizarre reason... it's like they beat themselves up and don't realize their talent so it all stays local and underground). The atmosphere is hyper liberal and diverse. The old timers for the most part don't get their panties in a bunch about stupid sh*t and are likely to join in on the fun (the city is filled with old Rochdale hippies and general beatniks). There is a criminal "urban youth" element but in general it keeps to itself... well mostly but compared to other cities of it's size the crime rate is essentially non existent. Because of the cultural diversity you can get awesome food from around the world, check out all sorts of wacky ethnic festivals, hang out with interesting people who have seen some serious sh*t, etc... very worldly and it's all pretty friendly. Their pride parade is a BLAST.

Whatevs... it is a very hectic place and people tend to be a little tightly wound but for a young idealistic spaz with a work ethic you can do very well there compared to other places and always have something fun/interesting to do. Montreal is more fun but it's a little more desperate and WAY more corrupt/violent. Vancouver is boring and depressing. Ottowa is just boring (but nice). Calgary... yeah, some good people there but there is the whole "Texas North" element going on which kid of ruins it. Winterpeg, Edmonton, Halifax, etc... frightening places if you want to cruise around and party (especially as a nancy pants homo lovin' leftist).

People slag TO for trying to be like NYC and to that I say that a) that's not exactly true... they just have a lot in common and b) even IF they were TRYING to be NYC what exactly is wrong with trying to emulate one of the greatest and most prosperous/exciting cities on the planet? But really... it is quite different than NYC aside from the whole multi cultural/highly progressive stuff.

I really should move there someday. They gotta get this right wing/mini tea party invasion under control first though. Rob Ford is NOT the Toronto I've experienced. He's just an asshole.

FTFA:

Toronto didn't fare well in civic engagement - voting, taking part in municipal politics - and in mental health, where suicide rates in the general population are high, Barnard said.

That certainly goes a long way toward explaining Rob Ford.

London...youthful....London...youthful.

Nope. Don't see it. Sorry.

Unfortunately the downtowners are EXTREMELY apathetic when it comes to actual politics (as in who is governing). They talk a good game but they hate their leaders SO much they tend to not vote. It's pretty f*cked actually considering if all the hipsters, hippies, punks and b-boys hit the polls the city could very easily turn green and give the GP relevance on the federal stage. This Ford fiasco may end up getting people to start paying more attention because it hit so close to home. Usually what happens is leftists run the city so they are insulated from the more general derp that happens elsewhere in the country and even conservative politicians know not to f*ck around too much with TO. The whole Ford Nation bluster and the ensuing aftermath might just be enough to scare them into giving a f*ck.

I'd love to see the Capitals and Maple Leafs make the Eastern Conference Finals so they could do a mayoral bet over a Kilo of coke.

Your top law enforcement official is an admitted crack whore, how much more liberal can it get than that?

You've seen this map, right?  When people talk about 'Toronto', they're talking mostly about the parts in red.

Uh... and your point is? The downtown voted left... as usual. Red does not mean conservative in Canuckerland if that is where you are going with this.

lived ther 12 years til recently moving to Vancouver on a whim.

Toronto is great, especially downtown, if not the endless suburbs.

Sadly, this has done nothing for sky-high rent prices and investing in public transportation and infrastructure.

You either pay dearly to live near a subway line or drive 2 hours a day.
