The mob needs to take it back.

The city was alot more fun when the mob ran the joint. We tried to do "family friendly" in the 90s and it failed then so I'm not optimistic.

Vegas needs more sin.  They need to legalize prostitution and pot right away.

Headline has nothing to do with the contents of the article.... TLDR version: Young people aren't gambling as much , but are ccoming for the shows, dining, and clubs.

Who needs a $10 craps table when folks put down $10,000 (price mentioned in the article) for bottle service at a club for Stoli?

If I were designing Vegas, I would have the city laid out by morality:  put a Disney-like theme park at one end of town as the family-friendly anchor, with mini-golf and water parks and cheap family motels.  Slowly integrate the more adult stuff into the middle of town, and then have the far side of town be Whoreville.

Poof!

Now we can have hookers and pot. The end.

This - and with gambling getting legal everywhere, Vegas has NOTHING. There is NO REASON to go there.
F**k that place, and the shiatty, creepy people who will shortly cease to live there.

Mangoose: Again?

Even the article says so, but still glosses over how much money was lost on the family entertainment.

But then the article also talks about new nightclubs with Cirque performers and $10,000 tables, and this isn't family entertainment anymore.

Las Vegas with entertainment? Whoda thunk?

I am someone with an interest in place branding/ marketing, (branding a city/ state, etc) and everything I've read about Vegas said their board of tourism is trying to keep away the families, etc... which is where the "What happens here, stays here" branding came from.

My idea, is that Detroit should try to become the new gambling/ debauchery destination. It has casinos, strip clubs, cheap booze.  The closest thing to wholesome is a Tigers game.

New Orleans has that too and the food is 1000 times better.

Absolutely well put.

Las Vegas' only problem, is that it's in a terrible part of the world.

I had one try to take me for the tourist ride, I pulled out my phone GPS and the dude flipped the F out. I found it odd that he would go west to take us to a place that was east.

Money is what keeps Vegas alive and the city wants to eat yours. Every last dime. If it weren't as outwardly greedy I'd want to go more often.

/$20 cab ride to a place that has a $20 cover and serves crappy $20 drinks.
//$60 in and I've been in Vegas 2 hours, is this the part where it starts being fun?

I like that I'm within driving distance of Vegas. I go twice a year for one night so that I can play craps and sports bet then I go home the next day.

Nah, I think you want the Lions games for that... The Tigers score more often.

As a guy who plans to move to Vegas in the semi-near future, I don't particularly care what they do as long as the money doesn't leave. But remind me, in total, how much money has been spent on The Vagina Monologues vs spent on actual vaginas?

/Doom.

I like to remember Las Vegas like Fear and Loathing depicted it.

I thought so too.  If they wanted it both ways they could advertise all the kids friendly stuff during the morning/afternoon and then just start pumping Whodini's "Freaks Come Out At Night" through loudspeakers in the evening.  Kinda like how Cartoon Network does things to differentiate regular programming and Adult Swim.

.

Mrs. docmattic and I were just in Vegas last weekend.  The Strip is basically like Disneyland for grownups... as long as you keep shellin' out the $$$, you can have as much fun as you can take.  Some really good restaurants, great bars, over-the-top shopping... but really not a place we would take the kidlings.

------

What Vegas takes out of the river amounts to a rounding error compared to SoCal, which sucks it so dry it doesn't even reach the ocean anymore at certain times of the year. Thanks to government farkery over water rights, California has the "right" to empty the river and fark everyone else in every other state it runs thru. Los Angeles (also in the middle of a desert and many times larger) is the city that shouldn't exist.

I liked vegas, I stayed in the old strip for 2 days, 12 dollar hotel (surprisingly clean and safe) 7 dollar buffet (think golden coral/Bonanza) free drinks and 100 dollars worth of gambling.

I found the whole place pretty tiresome after about 6 hours.

As I walk through the campus where liberals said I was deaf,

I take a look at my life and realize how I should have swung left

Cuz I've been herpin' and derpin' so long that even RON PAUL thinks my mind is gone

But I ain't never been given government assistance if I didn't deserve it, me being treated like a Welfare Queen?

You know that's unheard of.

You better watch where you're muslim, and where you want communism,

Or you and your Marxists gonna get McCarthy'd and split in a schism

I really hate to wharrgarbl but I gotta admit,

As I grow in body, I stay small in mind, foo'

I'm the kinda conservative that the kids at Jesus Camp want to be like,

On my knees in the Minneapolis Airport Restroom, lettin' Larry Craig's loafer's gettin' light

We've been spending most our lives pretending we want a libertarian paradise.

Worked better college-wise, fantasizin' about a libertarian paradise.

We've been spending most our lives pretending we want a libertarian paradise.

The abortion issue they got me facin'

I can't live a normal life, I was raised by the evangicals

So I gotta be down with the pro-life team, too much A.M. Radio got me chasin' dreams

I'm an educated fool with money in my wallet, got ten in my hand and an illegal on my front lawn

I'm an unethical Real American(tm) set to be a hypocrit,

And my homies at Church know I'm down, so don't oppress my Christian beliefs, fool

Death ain't nothin' a Panel should throw out, when the Insurance Lobby is about

Big business should decide whether I live or die, what can I say?

They're rich, and maybe if I gobble their knob maybe I can get paid, fool

I'm 23 now, but will I live to see 24? Do I got a pre-existing condition? I don't know!

Tell me why are we so blind to see

That the ones we condemn to death are you... and me...

Power is money, money is power,

Minute after minute, hour after hour,

Government's runnin', but half of them are obstructin'

What's going on in Congress? Fox News will tell me what talkin' point they're pushin'

They say I gotta learn, and Rush Limbaugh is here to teach me,

If he can't understand reality, how can he reach me?

I guess he can't, I guess he won't

So I'm gonna ditto what he says, and march lock-step with his troop, fool

That already exists, it's called Myrtle Beach, SC.

So basically Las Vegas, the money trap, is reinventing itself as Las Vegas, the slightly different money trap?  It was fun back in the 80s, but now you can't walk five feet on the Strip without some lowlife trying to put a strip club or escort service flyer in your hand.
