Felipe's final race for Ferrari, subby.

Talk of rain on the team radio....

Romain Grosjean out at the end of lap 3 (engine), Sebastian Vettel leads Mark Webber (P2) by over 10 seconds, possible rain on the way

2013-11-24 11:25:31 AM
I loved it they talk about waiting for DRS so Vettel could pass for the lead, and he passes on the straight without DRS.

iron de havilland: Talk of rain on the team radio....

And others saying none forecast for 20-30 minutes.

2014 teams and drivers.

Maldonado likely to go to Lotus, since he takes money.

Di Resta doesn't, so a question mark there.

Bottas is not doing brilliantly over the last 2 laps....

2013-11-24 11:30:35 AM

Broktun: Will rain make the race more exciting?

It depends. It could cause some excitement, it could also cause lulz. The rain can hit out of nowhere and leave cars sliding all over the place before they can make it to the pits to change tires.

2013-11-24 11:30:35 AM
Vettel locked up his fronts which will cause him to pit...is it early? would love to see him caught out with dry tyres if the rain comes.

2013-11-24 11:32:41 AM
So everyone except Red Bull and a couple others pit, and the rains come..

Apparently they were the only ones to look at the radar.

And a 2.1 for Vettel, and a 5 for Webber. RBR doesn't give a SHT about Webber anymore.

You should try and find the highlights from yesterday's quali.

Perez ran over a kerb, which you really don't want to be doing in the wet and had a falling out with a wall.

I'll try posting this in the correct thread this time:

Bernie's tipped Christian Horner as his replacement.

and according to the Sky stream, Massa and/or Hamilton has a KERS issue

F1 needs the orange cone since they all are running over the start of the pit in line, but as best I can tell, that is ok, but running over the zebra stripe portion of the pit in line is the issue.

2013-11-24 11:52:37 AM

Well it's more about having all four tires over the line but then not pulling into the pits. A couple drivers were warned about it yesterday

They all seem to have all four tires over the single line portion, but slide back onto the track before the zebra stripe portion. MAS went across the zebra stripe portion of the line when he got his penalty.

Is there any penalty less harsh than a drive-thru?  Can they be forced to abandon DRS for a few laps or something?  Because that was pretty drastic.

Vettel winning again. Shocking, and boring.

2013-11-24 12:02:32 PM
commentators on Sky saying "scrap practice" as a way to get more exciting races. I have to wonder how much of the "boring race phenomenon" is caused by the tracks themselves. Older tracks, like Interlagos, Neurburgring, Spa, even Silverstone with all its modifications, tend to have better races, where the driver actually has to _drive_, than newer traks like Abu Dhabi

I don't think it's possible for a less severe penalty to be imposed during a race.

The race is hardly boring.

A drive through is the least drastic penalty for anything that doesn't involve gaining a position outside of the rules. If you gain a position doing something outside the rules you can be ordered to just give it back.

Jalopnik had commentary from a driver recently on this.  Designed tracks are too predictable and easy to drive.  Natural tracks have bad camber and other issues to make them more challenging to drive.

if Alonso's car breaks or he ends up off track, people are going to start thinking Red Bull has destruct buttons hidden in their garage.

Caterham watches Adrian Newey while Newey's watches those segments - if Adrian doesn't bust out laughing, they know they're on the right track

I wonder if NBC is paying for access?  Or Caterham just wants the extra screen time and figures it isn't giving anything away that their competitors don't already know.

Disaster (nearly) strikes

It's likely about exposure and the fact they're a backmarker team, so it's not like Red Bull or Mercedes car what they're doing.

I suspect it's gonna get real dusty next year, how soon into the year depends a bit on how good everyone's cars are. But it'll happen at some point

2013-11-24 04:06:29 PM
That race was just a 90+ minute cocktease, we kept hoping everyone would end up all wet, but it never came...

I can only hope next season is more exciting, I mean all the history of Vettel destroying records is nice and all, but when the race is over by lap 4, it's getting hard to watch.  Please let all the teams struggle with next season's tires, and please let them have reliability issues again.  The cars have been pretty much bulletproof the last few years, they even can ram into each other and half the time neither car has to retire.

I want to see a race where the outcome is in doubt until the checkered flag is in the air.

2013-11-24 04:43:50 PM
Just finished watching the replay, interesting race, if not particularly exiting. Looking forward to the teams starting fresh with the smaller engines next year. Are there any other changes to the car, like aero? New tires from Pirelli?

8-speed transmissions, for one. Other details can be found on this 87-page PDF, if one could be arsed to read through the whole thing

Or here's the cliff's notes version: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Formula_One_season#Rule_changes

V6-Turbos, 15k RPM limits, fuel flow limits, a much more powerful KERS (161 bhp x 33sec/lap), lower noses, more exhaust restrictions to try to prevent the blown diffusers.

I want next season to be similar to 2009 - a couple of teams will figure out a loophole and get out to a good lead in the championship, then by the end of the season everyone will have that on their cars.

I expect Newey and Red Bull will be fastest from the start and Vettel will win pretty much any race he finishes.
