The first sentence was confusing to anyone who doesn't know what 'Cal' refers to in a football context, but they're actually talking about Berkeley, not UCLA.

Both UCLA and UC Berkeley are part of the University of California system, but Berkeley is the one called 'Cal'.

This. I was a bit confused on why SF Gate would write an article about UCLA's athletics.

What seems the most baffling to me though, is the fact that the football program is dropping the standards of admission to a new low and getting absolutely zero in return. These guys just aren't cutting it in the classroom or the field. The university is under intense scrutiny and pressure from the expense caused by the renovation of Memorial Stadium, so they have to figure their shiat quick.

Well, this is Fark, where the entire state of California is just an ambiguous "out there".

Hence we have articles from the LA Times about happenings in Contra Costa County.

They fired Tedford b/c they panicked, and now they're reaping what they sow. If there's any city/community in the country that would violently take over a football stadium and turn it into a homeless campground, it's Berzerkeley.

I'm not even from the west coast and I knew that.

Sounds like Subby was a UCLA Cal student athlete.

Subby must have played sports for Cal.

If you've watched Cal's football team at all this year, they don't really embrace the "athlete" part, either.

Oh, and subby?  You're a moron.

Well the coaches don't want them studying anything other than a playbook. But that's true for every school that cares about its sports team.

tOSU fans that are expatriated to the west coast turned that stadium into a sea of red in September.  I'd guess it was about a 65-35 ratio, conservatively.
