It's nice they have a restaurant for people who don't like rollercoasters. Gives the people like me who ride them something to do while waiting for the people you're with.

The Polercoaster?  Will they call the ride operators Pole Dancers?

Subby: World's tallest roller coaster coming soon to, where else? Florida

Terrible headline, because the obvious answer would be Sandusky, Ohio.

It's nice Florida is trying to jump back into the rollercoaster game after giving up so much ground to the midwest in the past 30 years, though. It means we should see something relatively more insane out of Cedar Point in another couple of years.

FTFA: "Operation is simple. Trains are boarded by guests. They are then driven to the top loading them with enormous potential energy. Gravity then takes over...

So... like every roller coaster in the world, then.

(Hint: it's the second word in the name.)

With their limited space, that kind of footprint would be perfect for CP. Expect a 600ft version. Followed by a knockoff copy @ Six Flags that is 601 ft (the extra foot coming from a non coaster-related feature.)

True. I worry that they might run out of space. I know they tore down the old dorms that were in the park (since the 1920s, I kid you not. I stayed in them and they were horrible), but they will eventually run out of room i'm sure. It is on an island, sort of.

It'll look pretty on the ground when the hurricane knocks it over.

2013-11-23 05:03:21 PM
Why not just have a train that takes people up like 10,000 feet then they can ride down. Maybe with some sort of air catching thing that slows them before they impact the ground.

To be named "The Windcatcher" and used for three fourths of a season before a low strength hurricane shreds it.

That's when they start building rollercoasters under the current real estate...

... or they put a big platform above the current Cedar Point and build rollercoasters on top of that.

They fixed it a year or two ago. Smooth as a wooden coaster can be, now.

It's probably a safety issue, they have to make it tall enough that the anacondas can't grab riders on the way by.

That should look pretty cool sticking up above the eventual water line.

That'll be a fun view when it's surrounded on all sides by lightning storms but in a window it can still operate.

now now, the anacondas are still down in South America for the most part, you are thinking about the Burmese Python.

of course.. the last time I visited Florida, I didn't see any... saw plenty of iguana though.

shiat.. saw lots of iguana.. Have we told the folks in China that those things are tasty and give you boners if you eat them?

Besides, I'm sure that someone in Texas is already planning a bigger one.

it's not a big leap for them to have migrated. I sumise that they would have done so eventually, even with out help.

the anacondas should take care of the pythons though, and maybe help with the nutria

They can send some of their coasters to their sister park Michigan's Adventure... as somebody who makes a yearly trip there, I could get behind that move. $28 park pass for Cedar Point's little brother, which INCLUDES the water park.

Is that when they added those brakes on the first drop?  Before that, it was a fun, if bumpy wooden coaster.  After that, it was just shiat.

/Note: I am fat, so I wasn't getting bounced around because I was wedged in the seat.

dantheman195: I thought the world's tallest roller coaster was in Jackson, NJ?

Yes, but it's all a technicality anyway. The general terms used seem to distinguish between "highest" and "tallest", in which case you're right about the latter. The "highest" coaster there's ever been was the High Roller on the Stratosphere in Vegas; perched 909 feet above ground level, its max drop was in actuality only 20 feet. The one in the article follows the same principle, although certainly looks to be more thrilling.

The exact location of the "Polercoaster" has not yet been revealed.

What does that mean? Are they building it in some guy's back yard?

Orlando, Tampa, Miami... really, either of those cities could be viable for a tower attraction like this with a minimal footprint.

2013-11-23 08:30:56 PM
My guess is that they designed this ride on Rollercoaster Tycoon and, In lieu of a hurricane setting, left it unfinished in front of a lake just to see the consequences of a natural disaster.

Wikipedia's list of amusement parks in Orlando.

Now of course only a few of those could handle a roller coaster that big but there's at least a "slight" amount of mystery to it.

I doubt the big parks would have anything to do with a coaster like this. Fun Spot would be my best guess aside from just a standalone location in a downtown area (a la Vegas' Stratosphere), but they just put in a few new coasters at their Orlando location and doubt they'd make such a big investment two years in a row.

As for Uncle Bernie's, they already have the best coaster on earth.
