It's about freedom and liberty. In his view, a business owner should be able to decide if you are allowed to sit at his lunch counter or not based on the color of your skin. He believes that by doing so you will alienate customers and your business will eventually fail. Whether he actually believes it or just wears it as a public face to hide his personal bigotry is still a question. So, yeah, put him in charge and expect progress, sure. You bet.

Gop minority outreach isn't about minority votes.
It is about giving a little more cover when they try to convince some undecided ehite folks that it isn't a terrible idea to consider voting for their party on a national level.

These voters won't ever be hearing any more of the gop message than the ads right before the elections.

Write each flaw on a 3x5 card, put them unto a hat, then kick the hat very hard. The card that lands closest, right side up and facing you is the one to address first. Rinse and repeat.

"If the majority wills what is socially atavistic, then to thwart the majority may be, though undemocratic, enlightened. It is more important for any community, anywhere in the world, to affirm and live by civilized standards, than to bow to the demands of the numerical majority. Sometimes it becomes impossible to assert the will of a minority, in which case it must give way, and the society will regress; sometimes the numerical minority cannot prevail except by violence: then it must determine whether the prevalence of its will is worth the terrible price of violence.
The axiom on which many of the arguments supporting the original version of the Civil Rights bill were based was Universal Suffrage. Everyone in America is entitled to the vote, period. No right is prior to that, no obligation subordinate to it; from this premise all else proceeds.
That, of course, is demagogy. Twenty-year-olds do not generally have the vote, and it is not seriously argued that the difference between 20 and 21-year-olds is the difference between slavery and freedom. The residents of the District of Columbia do not vote: and the population of D.C. increases by geometric proportion. Millions who have the vote do not care to exercise it; millions who have it do not know how to exercise it and do not care to learn. The great majority of the Negroes of the South who do not vote do not care to vote, and would not know for what to vote if they could. Overwhelming numbers of White people in the South do not vote. Universal suffrage is not the beginning of wisdom or the beginning of freedom. Reasonable limitations upon the vote are not exclusively the recommendations of tyrants or oligarchists (was Jefferson either?)."

But, you know, who understands

They only talk to her, because,

out there, I mean - gross. Look!
She's just so ... black!"

FormlessOne: HighOnCraic: Smackledorfer: Gop minority outreach isn't about minority votes.
It is about giving a little more cover when they try to convince some undecided ehite folks that it isn't a terrible idea to consider voting for their party on a national level.

These voters won't ever be hearing any more of the gop message than the ads right before the elections.

THIS!!!

Clearly, this. The GOP couldn't care less, truly, about "minority outreach" - they only care about "voter manipulation."

I'm reminded at this point of Romney's visit to the NAACP just before the last election.

It wasn't about getting more black folks to vote GOP.

It was more about positioning Romney as the-man-who-walked-into-the-lion's-den and condescended to them in order to shore up his numbers among the white male entitlement crowd.

Even with that understood RAND PAUL is a comically bad choice here.

This is like getting Michele Bachmann to be the GOP's gay outreach coordinator level of stupid.

He also opposes affirmative action. So when you steal some hohos from the local convenience store, his property rights libertarian affections tell him it must absolutely be repaid. Property rights are the foundation of society. But when its a historical crime over centuries robbing an entire people of all wealth accumulation from their work, when it prevents them from building cultural stores to provide for each subsequent generation and move themselves forward, then... Well, we're good, right. No hard feelings.

True, but the oncoming combination train wreck/highway multi-car pileup will be well worth watching, for the entertainment value if nothing else.  This is the same Detroit that has an emergency manager appointed by the Republican governor that's tried to gut pensions, put the city into bankruptcy, and even caused an intentional power outage on September 11th in downtown buildings just to get people's attention.

"Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal."
-- Rand Paul

Though perhaps this one is more appropriate for GOP minority outreach:

"I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races, that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of making voters or jurors of negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man am in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race."

You people don't actually believe this crap do you? I am all cool with using statements he said to trash on the guy for political purposes, but you do realize that is what you are doing? right

He was worried that one provision of the civil rights act would pave the way for more government intrusion into private business. Agree or disagree with that, the idea is not a racist one. To argue otherwise makes you sound like a conservative who calls a liberal unpatriotic because they don't support part of the Patriot Act.

Oh, and the neo-confederate campaign manager. Except that he was a well known staff member, not a campaign manager and a proud southerner who said some stuff in his past he probably shouldn't have. Clearly his views match Rand's exactly. Right?

Oh, the fact that some people found his speech at Howard a little condescending. Must be a racist since he is the first republican to give a speech there in years.

Yes, clearly the man who wants to loosen drug laws, stop incarcerating blacks at a higher percentage than whites, stop mandatory sentencing and provide tax relief to inner cities...clearly he must be some racist.

I get so tried of this bull from both Dems and Repubs. He aint a racist. Stop playing this card. It is making conservatives angry, and moderates are starting to see right through this little game where believing in a balanced budget makes you a racist.
