Personally, I'd rather my elected officials be similar to me and my lifestyle. This "leader" bullshiat gets old quick when you realize they have no idea what most people want.

Because it's Toronto?

Does Rob Ford have a huge, privately funded propaganda campaign being run against him spotting complete and utter lies rather than rational critiques? That might be the reason for polling a few ticks higher.

Considering Ford's under attack from stuff he actually did as opposed to whatever fever dreams came to Rupert Murdoch in the night, I'd say that seems likely.

Or this. This also works.

I'm not surprised.  There is a disconnect between the city proper and the periphery, and Rob Ford represents the periphery the way they want to be represented.

probably more ReichWing propaganda, but it wouldn't surprise me.  after all, everyone now knows drugs are cool and harmless.  brain damage is all lies!

I'd have loved that too but all Rob Ford's speeches were about "stopping the gravy train" he ran a campaign that basically boiled down to being able to balance the budget by making cuts at city hall while cutting taxes. Apparently to a crackhead it looks like there are billions of dollars being squandered on pencils and toner but nobody ever noticed.

Rob Ford has had a huge privately funded propaganda campaign being run FOR him spouting complete and utter lies.
And largely from the 905 north of the city...
There are a couple of maps of his campaign contributions for the election in 2010 here.

The highest profile/unabashedly left-wing newspaper in the country has been at war with Ford almost since he was elected (and I have no doubt that this actually helps Ford with some segment of his base). There wasn't a lot of room for the media to get more hostile when he went from being a known idiot to a known crack-smoking idiot.

According to Rob Ford and his brother they have continuous leftist media propaganda campaign against them that is bankrolled by downtown liberals.

What difference does it make?  They have two completely different constituencies.

Or are they asking Americans what they think of a Canadian mayor because, you know, it's really important for us to have an opinion on that.

Yea, it's kinda too bad Ford does it so rarely.  But Ford Nation laps it up anyway, because it's what they want to hear...

What kind of fiscal conservative insists on building a short subway (In the wrong spot) that requires a tax increase about twice what he says is necessary to pay for, rather than much cheaper (fully funded too) light rail that would serve all of Scarborough?

I've been noticing how Rob Ford has become a bit of a Conservative dog whistle for Obama.  They love the crack/urban gang connection with the safety of pointing at a white guy.

Cementing the "cheap" Canuckian stereotype - a crack-smoking wife-beating drunken bipolar bigot of a mayor gets a free pass if he saves the dullard masses $15 a year on their property taxes.

From the article:

Job performance (Ford): 42%
Job performance (Obama) 37%
Would vote for Ford again: 33%
Would vote for Ford as PM: 18%

The first thing to bear in mind: partisans support their man through thick and thin. Conservatives are roughly 40% of the population and the political minority are 60% (yes, that's what I said).

American liberals are a lot more divided than Canadian liberals. They have a lot in common but they don't know it because race, religion, class, and political issues divide them. When Will Rogers said that he was a man of no organized party--he was a Democrat; and when he said organizing Democrats was like herding cats, he was well aware of these facts. He did not have to wait for a poll to confirm the fractiousness of Democrats. Good thing too. He's been dead for quite some time.

Although it might seem fair to compare job performance ratings for the Major and the President, they hold quite different offices and are playing to quite different audiences. Obama is being judged by both partisan liberals and partisan conservatives, Ford's performance number were from conservative partisans and people who don't care about the personal life of the politician nearly as much as the general American public do.

Both are basically supported by die-hard political partisans or people who are unconcerned by or don't know their policies.

How many people would vote for Obama if he could run for a third term? Hypothetical question. The voters know that ain't gonna happen so they can be more critical now and hold their noses when they mark their ballot.

I expect that if Ford tries to run again, he'll lose about half of those "would be voters". The opposition would HAVE to split the vote to lose. If he ran as the Conservative PM, he'd ruin the party, but there is no real chance of that. Harper's not leaving. Ford can hurt him, but he can't replace him.

How many people vote in Toronto Mayoral Elections? That tells you how serious they are about the incumbant and the would-be incumbants to come. My guess is that it is very slight turnout. Presidential Elections have the best turnout. Not good turnout, but the best you can get.

2013-11-23 04:28:44 PM
It all boils down to this: if Torontonians could vote in US Presidential Elections, a lot more of them would vote for Obama than would vote for Mayor of Toronto. Even if Ford runs again.

Exactly. Lots of terrible people live in Toronto.

Most of the dedicated assholes in my high school graduating class moved there eventually.
