Too bad for you, better for us four people who vacation in Berlin. Berlin is an awesome city, there's a lot to see. The Metro is awesome and easy to get around in, just remember to stamp your ticket before riding. There are so many sites to see. And a lot of the Germans speak English! And for me, when I'm done in Berlin, I go to this strain station to take a six hour ride to Prague. A very nice train ride.

I would say especially if you're a young person you should visit Berlin. It's a fun place to go.

Yeah, I'll be honest - I'm not sure I get the headline. Berlin seems awesome.

Now if we were talking about that shiat hole Chicago, then I could see what they meant.

I totally agree, Berlin is awesome!  Bonus points for finding the various bullet-pocked and/or Soviet-built monuments.  Lots of cocktail bars, very easy to get around on the S-bahn and the U-bahn.

I like to stay at the Circus Hotel in Rosenthaler Platz. Pretty close to everything and it's lively there.

Agreed.  Was there this summer and it was awesome.  Amazing weather, great vibe to the city and easy to get around.  Stayed in an apartment via airbnb and really enjoyed the city.  Everyone was super nice, most speak English and for Western Europe it's extremely affordable.

Actually, renting a furnished apartment for a month in many locations is really cheap compared to a week or two of hotel + every meal out. If you're going to spend a few thousand on decent airfare to get to Europe you might as well spend some time there.

Oh wait, you have a job that won't let you take a month off? Too bad.

Meh, this is happening in every city.

On one hand it's the free market reacting to the high prices of hotels, on the other hand I personally would not want to live in an apartment building where units are being rented out to tourists.

If someone is able to rent out their apartment for 1 month per year, that doesn't translate to a 8.33% empty apartment available for permanent housing. People would still want to live in their own apartment the rest of the year.

Berlin is so damn awesome that people are willing to overlook the temperature they serve beer at and the syrup they add to it. If any other city screwed up beer that badly, they would probably be nuked.

You've got to draw a distinction between the people who rent out their primary residence for a few weeks a year while they're on vacation, and the people who own apartments that aren't their primary residences - maybe investment properties, maybe pied-à-terres that they use very occasionally - that they rent out for a profit.  The former has no bearing on the overal availability of housing for residences, and in fact helps middle-class and working-class people afford to stay in their own cities.  The latter empties neighborhoods, starves local businesses, and takes desperately needed housing off of the market.

Paris is handling a similar issue.  IIRC, the new law that city hall just enacted draws a certain monetary limit that you can realize from a seasonal rental - below that, no big deal, just report the income on your tax returns.  Go above it, and you need to have a hotelier's license and form a separate legal entity to hold it before you can rent the place out.  It remains to be seen how it'll work out.

I saw that about 15 years ago with Teri Hatcher at Sally.  She could act, the singing was so-so.
MC was off the charts.

When the lights went down and then back up at the very end, the entire theater was dead quiet for 10 seconds before we started applauding.

Raspberry, and only if you're stupid enough not to drink one of the many real beers available.

Yup, they call it Berliner Weisse.

And hey now, Micheladas can be awesome if you go to the right places in Mexico. The ones they make here in the US tend to be awful, though.
