I cannot believe this show made it to a fourth season.  The first season was great, but the second season was beyond ridiculous.

I haven't watched it yet.  The second season really let me down.

I will, eventually, just because once I start a show I feel obligated to finish it.

I'm late to the show. Missed the first season completely, saw the end of the second, been watching the third. But I hope the format catches on. I like the concept of limited run series under a brand name. I like Blacklist, for example, but it would be so much better if season 1 was Red and what's her name, and season 2 would be a completely different storyline with different characters.

After what happened this on this past Wednesday's episode (don't worry, not gonna spoil it for anyone) I think that's a distinct possibility.

I think it's gotten better every year. I was not a fan of Season One because there was no one to root for; every character was unsympathetic and you hoped they'd all die. Season Two was awesome and ridiculously over-the-top but still a blast, if not very coherent. This season seems like they've really figured out how to put a narrative together instead of just stuffing in a million horror cliches. They still do that too, but they've finally figured out how to do it with a story with characters.

Hope they can keep Kathy Bates around too.

I liked Season 1, I thought Season 2 was decent, but not as good as Season 1, but I've been really liking Season 3 thus far.  I'll be really sad to see Jessica go :(.  She's an amazing actress.

I watched the first 4 or 5 episodes of the first season and gave up, I didn't even to bother to watch the second season until my girlfriend started watching halfway in. First of all I was a little surprised it got a second season and secondly that it was so different and enjoyable. The first season bored me but the intense weird madness of season 2 had me hooked almost immediately. This season is even better it lacks the what the fark? aspect I loved but the story is a lot more focused honestly a lot of the time its more black humor than horror. Fiona and Delphine in particular are hilarious the Stevie Nicks lady is pretty funny too.

This is bad news for a pretty decent show.  Jessica Lange is one of the best actresses I've ever seen.  It's going to be hard to fill those shoes.  If they don't keep Bassett or Bates on the show, or get someone who is just as good, I don't think I can keep watching.  I don't care much for the younger actors on the show.

If you watch the second season as a boxset blockrun, I think it's superb. It's incredible how something only 12 episodes long has the sense of an ending that feel the same as the end of something with a year-after-year-after run.

Frances Conroy proved in Six Feet Under that with the right part, should could easily carry the show as a matriarch.

I agree, but over these first 3 seasons, she is barely in them.  I don't know if it's due to the people in charge not wanting her to have a bigger role, or she doesn't want to dedicate that much time to the show.

To be fair, after Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates... they can probably cherrypick who they want now, given it's been given official critical seal of approval (and any actress knows that a part will be extreme and meaty, and inevitably award-oriented).

If would surprise me if they could draft in a film heavyweight, like Helen Mirren or Cate Blanchet.

They've already had Meryl Streep's daughter on the show, actually. She was the witch that sprung the trap on the Axeman.

Jessica Lange has been doing an amazing job for three seasons now. This show could be thought of as her giving a multiyear acting class.

Lily Rabe, who is playing Witchy Nicks this season is also consistently awesome. Her possessed nun from season 2 is still my favorite character and storyline over the whole series.

Wow, not only is the LaLaurie house real, but Nicholas Cage actually did own it at one point. I thought the show was just trolling.

I would be happy with almost anything for season 4 as long as they stay away from vampires. New Mexico setting? They've done a little with aliens, maybe more? They also could go into Native American mythology.

I agree, though I think the middle of season 2 was rather good. The first few episodes felt like too much was being thrown together and the last few episodes lacked the best characters of the series and didn't really wrap up all the shiat they haphazardly threw in.

well, yeah, the last 2 episodes (three, actually) weren't as interesting and were a largely heavy-handed  in their attempts to wrap up the multitude of stray plots floating around. The whole alien subplot was one subplot way too many.

The aliens weren't really a subplot, they were in the very first scenes. I always took them as a play on 1) the most common delusion of the insane, 2) a massive trope of the 60s, and 3) An unknowable "other" to replace divinity, given we had Satan wandering around in red knickers, which does away with the unknowable nature of faith somewhat..

Wouldn't it have been easier just to link to the EW article, which has much more information?

The trend of sites simply linking to news from other sites baffles and annoys me. What's the point?

I'm of 2 minds with this.

Jessica has been strong enough to work through the weaker scripts that Season 2 brought to the table. She's a loss of talent if she leaves.
That said, It may be cool to cycle the cast in and out. As long as the show keeps it's 1 story arc per season approach, you can keep it interesting.

Season 3 has been a little campy, but, lots of fun. (little light on the horror though.)
Season 2 was heavier on the horror, but weaker characters. I'm not sold on Sarah Paulson as a actor. She's stiff, it's esp noticeable in scenes with Jessica.

I really hate Sarah Paulson and I hope they don't give her the lead actress spot in Season 5.  She is a terrible actress.  You can't tell the difference between her reporter character of last year and her teacher-witch character this year.  Lily Rabe is so much better.
It would be great if Jessica Lange stayed in the cast in a smaller walk-in part, like Alexandra Breckenridge's character this season.   Or maybe AB will join the larger cast again; she's better than Sarah Paulson.

I really liked Frances Conroy on Six Feet Under; she was perfect for that part.  However, she has yet to impress me in anything else.  There's just something off about her or awkward maybe when she tries to be a strong female.  Maybe I'm just used to her being Ruth or because her voice is so sweet.  I just don't think I could see her as a tough as nails woman that Jessica always plays.  I don't believe she could fill those shoes even in the slightest bit.

Kathy Bates on the other hand could easily do it, however, she could never be the aging beauty part.  What's great about Lange is that she has that tough older woman thing going, but she's still incredibly beautiful and can play that fem fetale part.  Not that whatever part should would have to play would have to have been beautiful.

Angela Bassett could do that though I suppose.

Lsherm: Mugato: Lsherm: I cannot believe this show made it to a fourth season.  The first season was great, but the second season was beyond ridiculous.

You're not alone.  I can't say I hated it because I still liked it enough to keep watching and it definitely had its moments, but I agree that it was completely disjointed and didn't flow together well.  I basically liked Lange's part, the young possessed nun, and Zachary Quinto's storyline.  I did not care about Evan Peters, the French girl, James Cromwell's story (although he played off Lange well), or Chloe Sevigny.  The aliens were a huge turnoff for me and Cromwell's stuff could have been so much more interesting had it been the focus of the story taking much longer to reveal or for the characters to figure out.  His storyline just kind of appeared then fizzled out.

I will say that this season is a lot better than season 2 and possibly better than season 1 in my opinion.
