You should never hug a shark unless you want to be a good chum.

Know who else was 'so gentle and accepting of our advances'?

This article is highly appropriate given that 50 years ago today Steve Irwin was assassinated by a manta ray in Dealey Plaza.

Meh; sharks aren't killing machines, like in the movies. They'd only come after you if you looked like a seal. There's a video of some lady free swimming with a great white; and the shark doesn't eat her. Sharks only go after dive cages because of the chum they throw out.

/ if you've ever been to the Atlantic or pacific; odds are, you were within 100 yards of a shark and never knew it.

The sharks probably thought the remoras were getting bigger. No big deal.

Kayaking in the lagoon in the middle of Wake Island in 1995, I saw a black thing the size of my kayak swim underneath me.  I assumed it was a shark, but it could have been Cthulhu's baby nephew, I suppose.

Someone once told me that if you're ever attacked by a shark you should urinate and strike them in the nose, but I think it'd be smarter to just get out of the pool, alert the life guard, and then urinate.

Yep, it was a shark. Unless you had one of those huge kayaks; it was probably a young blue shark.

IIRC, lemon sharks are considered dangerous because they tend to hang out in shallow and turbulent water where they can easily bite a person as a mistake/tasting. Sharks are fun to dive with. I wouldn't normally swim up and grab one, but that's as much for the shark's benefit as my own.

You would be correct. Though I'm not sure it was that particular bear.

There are some people that were born to hug sharks

The rest of us need to keep the fark away from them

I worked at a resort in Moorea, the next island over from Bora Bora.  What the article doesn't tell you is that most sharks there are docile and are hand fed daily for the amusement of visitors.

"Although the shark appeared calm, the decision to approach it has been labelled as 'dumb' across social media channels."

Yes, because it's always a good idea to listen to what people think on social media...

Seriously, idiot article is idiot. I'd wager good hard cash you can get people to state that breathing is a dumb move on Twitter.

"[They] were so gentle and accepting of our advances. They didn't seem to mind at all that we were riding for free. It was as close to an out of body experience that I have ever felt."

I said that after a trip to Tijuana with my dad when I was 15.

Then dad ruined the memory for me, years later, when he admitted that it wasn't free at all.

Thanks dad.

You all forget that this happened in Australia.  The shark was probably the LEAST dangerous creature within 10 miles of the swimmer.  He was probably clinging to it for safety.

this.

the only attacks I've ever heard about in French Polynesia were from sharks attacking spearfishermen who had their fish kills attached to their belt or something like that.

I hate sharkfeeding. The most amazing thing I saw diving in FP was hundreds of sharks just lazily swimming through a pass in Fakarava... no feeding, no frenzy, just graceful swimming with the current.

nice you got to work in Moorea, I can't get ahold of any legal way to work in that country yet. :(

It's tough to tell on young sharks; but, it's relatively easier on adult sharks. The really big ones are female.

/ that's true with most shark species
