I hear Head East and Kansas are slated also.  Grand Funk Railroad is still incommunicado in the rehab center.

I hope REO opens with "Riding the Storm Out."

2013-11-22 07:53:16 PM
Well, they're used to things that blow, so it all makes sense.

Was this a retro tornado?

came for Head East reference and leaving flat as a pancake

That would be a neat trick, as Styx hasn't existed since 1999.

Then who the hell did I see last Thursday?

I know it is really cool to hate them, but they were fantastic and mostly avoided the god-awful Deyoung-penned tunes. They skipped Kilroy Was Here entirely.

All they are is dust in the wind.

I like going to the shows by the older, almost has-been bands. Most of the time, they are so grateful that they still have a crowd to play to that they put on a hell of a show.

2013-11-22 08:31:58 PM
That's not an Oxford comma.  Is that a DeVry comma?

A cover band with some guy?

(We obviously have different tastes for Styx eras, which is cool.)

Tommy Shaw, Chuck Panozzo, and James Young were on the stage, it was Styx enough for me. Lawrence Gowan sounds enough like Dennis, plays the keyboard parts note for note, and is non-douchey. And they have a better drummer now than they ever have.

Why Styx?  REO is local, why not a nice mash up with Mudvayne?

damn right. the only downside is the girls with the perkies are now moms with the floppies and they ain't afraid to whip 'em out.

Yeah, but you run the risk of that at any state fair in the midwest anyway.

Some state fair had a billboard about ten years ago:
"See the Bands You Thought Were Dead!"

We have seen Styx, REO, Grand Funk RR, Foreigner, Pat Benetar, Clapton, Steve Winwood (also performing together) UFO, Boston, and Paul Rogers in Las Vegas.  Some several times. All have been a good time with folks near our ages.  The Romantics were pretty cool too.

The first drummer Styx had, pre nation-wide fame explosion, was damned good.

Styx played at my high school.

No Dennis DeYoung?  No Styx.  You might as well have REM with no Michael Stipe or U2 with no Bono.

Aren't Styx and REO Speedwagon the same band??

2013-11-23 02:34:07 AM
Styx was the first band I really listened to. 6th grade, 1999. Greatest Hits. I played the heck out of that CD. Styx/REO Speedwagon was the first concert I went to. The Black Crowes were the opening band. Whenever I'm feeling nostalgic I put on their greatest hits CD. I also think Brave New World is a great album.

For tornado relief, the best choice would have been Toto.

Foreigner, Styx, and Journey, and Boston all have newer lead singers than we grew up with.  Kind of a mixed bag really.  Do want to see a guy who can hit the notes like the original guys or see the original guys kind of struggle.  The only one I didn't really like was the guy with Journey.  He seemed to wail like Steve Perry squared.

I think Gowan does a great job, and DeYoung kind of annoyed me anyway.  Have you seen Gowan sing with Styx live?  If you have and don't like it then to each his own, but if you liked old Styx and haven't seen them lately, give it a try.

I've recently seen Ian Anderson, The Zombies, Burton Cummings, Lyle Lovett and Johny Hyatt. To each his own, and if you like REO or Styx, fine. But to my mind, there's more than gratitude on the part of the band that you showed up. REO could give it everything they've got and I'd be looking at my watch.

There seem to be a lot of music snobs that would rather see a band you probably haven't heard of.
And if you actually have, they don't like those sellouts anymore..
