As a military brat and veteran, part of me misses Reveille and Retreat, but only a very small part.  The rest of me is damn happy not hear it twice a day, every day for 20 odd years.  None of me misses it blasting over barracks speakers while some no neck sergeant screams at me to get my ass out of bed,

When I first saw the headline I thought back to AIT (for you non-military, AIT means Advanced Individual Training). We had this Drill Sergeant who would run outside when To The Colors played. farker would drop everything he was doing just for that.

Naval Weapons Station Earle has been around for quite some time and it has a very good standing with the community. Many from the base shop and contribute to the local area, these neighbors of mine can shut their yappers.

Years ago they used to run nukes straight through these communities from the depot inland in Colts Neck to the ships all the time. Fun times with all the marines around

I was down in Ft. Gordon, GA for AIT. During the winter months, we did PT in the evenings. We always had to stop in the middle of our run to salute the colors. Then our sergeants would run our asses off to make up for the "lost time."

You're thinking of Picatinny when it comes to explosions in NJ.  That's just storage (i.e. depot) down in Earle.

The only thing that could get me to visit New Jersey would be a Mayor Ford v Gov Christie sumo wrestling match.

That might actually be a good idea. Maybe they'd finally get a handful of tourists into that ghost town Atlantic City. New Jersey is a rust belt state with a rusty coastline. Even the supposed beautiful/decent places (Cape May, Princeton, Cherry Hill, whichever Orange is the rich one) are flanked by intolerable hellholes (Vineland, Trenton, Camden, whichever Orange is the poor one). And the people are so loud and bombastic. Just terrible. It's a state populated by people who think a long weekend in Miami wearing jean shorts and "Scarface" tee shirts means they made it.

Hauptmann shouldn't have been executed, he should have been acquitted and rewarded from sparing that kid the suffering of growing up in the "Garden State."

Generally, I think this is like moving next to a farm that smells like fertilizer.  It's part of the deal, it's a necessary function to run the business.

I live about a half mile from a tiny little stone chapel, you wouldn't even know it was there... if not for the cheap ass church bells played over a loud speaker system.  In this day and age, I have no idea why it's legal to blare music from loudspeakers.  Granted, it doesn't annoy me enough to complain about it.

This type of NIMBY azzholeism is common everywhere.  A jerk couple bought a house next to a firewood supplier a few years ago and then sued because they were sawing firewood.   The firewood business had been at the same location for decades.   Out in Pennsylvania a developer put up a subdivision next to an existing rifle range.  Soon after moving in, the new homeowners sued to have the range shut down.

My hometown grew up around an Air Force base. When the base was realigned during the Clinton years, it damn neared destroyed the local economy. I don't have solid numbers, but a few years back community leaders said it now has more active duty personnel than it did when it was active. Regardless, it got ugly during the transition.

My brother's house (which was my parents, then mine) is about a mile or two from the main gates. You can hear the bugles everyday and honestly, they aren't that annoying.

But I have a soft spot for the base. Some of my lifelong friends only landed in the city because their parents were in the AF.

If you hear a explosion on that base...you might want to get out of dodge. They only store bombs, missiles and ammo in bunkers there. Its where ships go to onload their weapons before and after deployments.

Good thing it's a Navy base; try reveille at 6 am every day (Go Army!).

Billy Joel is a piano lounge singer who got really, REALLY lucky.  Even by his own admission.

He was knockin' boots with Christie Brinkley in her prime, I'd call that lucky. She STILL rates a 9.

Bermuda59: I work on Naval Base San Diego and whever we have foreign ships in they play their anthems as part of morning colors. We recently had Canadian ships here and after hearing "Oh Canada." I expected to see a hockey game start.

If a japanese pulls in there, do not get caught outside. Their Anthem I swear feels like it goes on for 10 minutes.

Used to live 150 yard from the parade field at Orlando Naval Training Center (RIP).  105mm howitzer charges every Friday at 0930 hours.

\Suck it up, Francis.

Smoky Dragon Dish: dkimball: That Naval station is really in Colts Neck and not Middletown per se...  And there are just a ton of multi-million dollar houses around that Naval station.  Just google or bing maps it and look around.  HUGE homes and horse farms.

Yes, but... there is that little piece of land which holds the train tracks and Normandy Rd which go up to Middletown.  That's federal/DoD land.  Have you ever tried driving from Colts Neck to Middletown on Normandy Rd?

I just checked it out on google earth.  That road goes all the way from Earle to 3 piers at Sandy Hook. There's even a military ship docked there.

I find this whole thing fascinating.

During RIMPAC, it takes forever to get through all the anthems. I pity the fools who are caught outside when morning colors go down.

Now I wonder who was there first.

May your reign
Continue for a thousand, eight thousand generations,
Until the pebbles
Grow into boulders
Lush with moss

That's kind of impressive then.

Being a 20 year military vet I've liven on several military bases and I can assure you, the only reason they would be able to hear it inside their house, at a level that would even be legible, would be if their windows and doors are open.

People who expect absolute quiet 24/7 need to go live in the damn country where they have no neighbors for 50 miles.

Just looked it up on maps, it's right across the way from a golf course with what looks to be 1mil+ homes.  I'd bet the farm it's some rich butthole complaining because it ruins their concentration on the tee.  Outside is the only way possible they would hear it from that distance.

If I ran the post I would add another set of loudspeakers.

When I was at Fort Leonard Wood they often played Springsteen's "Born in the USA" over the post's loudspeakers at 5 am.

Uh, not unless I want to get arrested.  I wish they would open that road up west of the naval station.

Reville!  Reville!  Heave out and trice up.  The smoking lamp is lighted in all authorized spaces.  Breakfast for the crew.

EVERY SINGLE DAY at sea... 0600.
