Newsflash: Times change. Nobody at that time envisioned a lockstep minority party. Congress was supposed to the brains of the Legislative Branch, not a bunch of puppets.

I don't think the Founders envisioned a Black president either.

Ironically, the term "nuclear option" was coined by a Republican (Trent Lott) back when the Republicans were threatening to this a decade ago. The difference is back then 7 Dems reached across the aisle and struck a deal to keep it from happening. This time around, Reid threatened for MONTHS, but the Republicans kept on being d!cks. So live with it.

"I'm for the nuclear option, absolutely. The filibuster of federal district and circuit judges cannot stand. ... It's bad for the institution. It's wrong. It's not supportable under the Constitution. And if they insist on persisting with these filibusters, I'm perfectly prepared to blow the place up. No problem." - Republican Trent Lott, 2003

The term "nuclear option" for ending the filibustering of judicial appointments was created by the GOP. Yet another "Republican idea" that they suddenly don't like anymore.

No, but dueling was OK. We need to bring back the Founding Father's traditions.

So, the Democrats were for filibustering DC Circuit court judicial appointments before they were against them? Seems like everyone's being a hypocrite.

/No, don't vote Republican. They don't deserve it.

If I'm not mistaken, the Democrats had issues with the nominees themselves.  The GOP is filibustering because Benghaziobamacare.

Filibuster is supposed to be used in times of emergency, not as common tactic.

You abused it for judicial nominees and now its being taken away from you.

Maybe this will teach you

I doubt it but one can hope

Of the 180-something filibusters of Presidential nominees that have occurred since the founding of the country, HALF have occurred during Obama's administration.

There is a more sane alternative. If the left would be willing to help it I am certain that these people could be successful.

Normally people would be against the left helping the right, but we are in very strange times indeed. The survival of our nation most likely depends on it.

The Dems have used the filibuster half as much as the Republicans, and usually on an individual basis when they didn't like an judicial appointment. The Republicans have been filibustering on a systematic level, even filibustering judges that they later voted in favor of after they couldn't delay the vote any longer. That is abuse. That is sabotage. That is not governing.

If you abuse it, you lose it. How many more losing gambles are the Republicans going to make? Instead of using it strategically, they've destroyed their ability to use it at all.

But they say the thread is over when people start debating the minutia of grammar and word meanings.

We've hit that point early, it seems.

Back then he was talking about GOP nominations.  About 10, if I recall.  And he found them objectionable solely on the grounds of being completely unqualified and unprincipled hack lunatics with axes to grind that would put party ahead of country.

As if just one reason was enough to disqualify a True American®.

YES. They renamed it that because they didn't like the term "nuclear option," even though one of their own had coined it.

This is the inevitable end to yet another fight that the Republicans started but didn't have the power to win. It's like the last government shutdown, except this one stretched out for a few years before the Dems finally pulled the trigger. If the GOP had any strategic intelligence, they would have waited for judicial nominees that they have genuine problems with, rather than blindly filibustering just to f*ck over the President. Now the president can nominate pretty much anybody he wants and they can't do shiat about it.

But their stupid base only hears the tough talk and ignores the lack of results.

Everybody glosses over this little detail - as if fighting specific nominees one disagrees with, and simply issuing a blanket refusal to approve any nominee, were the same thing. They are not the same thing. They are not the same thing at all.
