I can usually see how someone might stretch something torturously into being offensive, but I'm lost here.  How is PB+J racist?  And who is it denigrating?  I grew up working class caucasian, and I ate a lot of PB+J.

There was a man in New Orleans who lived for a week after Katrina on a huge jar of peanut butter that he ate with a spoon.

And he was black. And he was stuck in his attic.

No way is peanut butter racist.

Latkes are racist. Don't see why Jewish people have to come here and eat their own food in America. No Native Americans ever ate a latkes before.

That's why I eat peanut butter honey and just a dash of salt to set off the honey.  Farking racist sammiches.

Because messicans and ayrabs don't eat sammiches, ergo, you should talk about tacos and pita to be inclusive. Whether this works also for chitlins and watermelon is an exercise left to the astute reader.

It's only racist if it's creamy peanut butter.  Crunchy is the correct, non-racist peanut butter.

Oh FFS,  Nobody but the blogger is saying PB&J's are racist.

If you are teaching in a multi-cultural environment don't use examples from YOUR culture that some might not be familiar with to try and teach.

I had a Bangladeshi student once come to office hours because I used the example of a termite gut in a lecture about microbial communities.  To understand the point, you needed to know that termites only ate wood.  He had never heard of a termite.  Now I make sure that tidbit is part of the lecture.

2013-11-21 01:36:11 PM
That was so full of embellished BS that I had to read it twice. If you want to get technical, exactly what can't be considered racist? It seems that everything a white person might do apparently is.

How about wiping the arse? Some nations don't have TP. Is TP racist? Don't Muslims mainly use their left hands and a jug of water? Putting TP in schools with mixed religions can then be considered Racist!

This is pure stupidity. I get it that people from other cultures might not eat sandwichs. Good for them. Last time I checked Portland was in the United States. Most people in the United States eat sandwichs. The others have freakin seen or heard of a god damn sandwich! This is why nobody takes these people seriously.

I could easily see that used as an example of something that could cause a problem for unbiased evaluation of students from different backgrounds. In order to fairly evaluate reading comprehension, it is best to avoid things that some children may not be familiar with for reasons beyond their control. A PB&J sandwich probably won't cause too much trouble, but it illustrates the point. A better example might be something like a story about a fishing trip being read by kids from the inner-city. Some of them may have never even left the city, let alone gone fishing. That could easily bias the scores.

That bit about a drum class for minorities only, though, that's just straight-up stupid. This line is just farking ridiculous:
"When white people do it, it is not a problem, but if it's for kids of color, then it's a problem?" says Gutierrez, 40, an El Paso, Texas, native whose parents were Mexican immigrants. "Break it down for me. That's your white privilege, and your whiteness."

ITT: A fair number of people who missed this last year...

They must be waking up in circumstances similar to those of the author of TFA.

2013-11-21 01:44:04 PM

Yeah, that's not what happened at all.

Take the peanut butter sandwich, a seemingly innocent example a teacher used in a lesson last school year," the Tribune said.

"What about Somali or Hispanic students, who might not eat sandwiches?" Gutierrez asked. "Another way would be to say: 'Americans eat peanut butter and jelly, do you have anything like that?' Let them tell you. Maybe they eat torta. Or pita."

No one said sandwiches are racist. They're just saying there may be a better way of explaining things to make sense to kids of all cultures.

But I can see how this author is outraged by the idea that kids of other cultures may be allowed to go to school like white kids.

I was AMAZED that Europeans thought peanutbutter and jelly together were the devil. Hey, they're the ones missing out...

People need to ease up on outrage.  While people from some cultures may not eat sandwich bread, even children are probably aware that people from various cultures mix carbohydrates with fillings and eat them.  A pita, a taco, a sandwich, a dumpling, and that pancake thing you scope foods within Ethiopian restaurants  is approximately the same thing.  I think that even children raised in space would figure that one out pretty quickly.

Did the people who put forth this cultural bias argument actually call the PB&J racist, or was it just the people who misunderstood what was being said?

I don't know about racist, but a lot of assumptions are being made when you try to teach a bunch of kids of differing backgrounds by using a PB&J sandwich as a teaching aid. Imagine going to some small, midwest, sheltered, 100% white town and teaching something by using terms like torta and bahn mi.

No, it's racist because Billy is almost certainly a migrant worker being paid under the table as he makes less than minimum wage.

I don't think a pb+j sandwich is that hard to explain.  If it IS, then you have some much tougher barriers to overcome with that bunch of kids.

CSB: the little toe goes to a majority Latino/Hispanic school.  We are Scandinavian in ancestry, so the little to is a toe head with green eyes.  Anyway, they had this assignment when he was in the first grade about Cinco de Mayo.  The reading assignments and were about things like Caesar Chavez and this little girl making tortas with her mom.  little toe usually does really well on his grades but this week he bombed every assignment.  when we asked him about it he just said it was boring, or he didn't like the story.

And no time like the present to introduce kids to the fact people eat sandwiches here.

Also, the potential for this to backfire is pretty high. "Now Divya, I know people eat with their hands in your village." "I'm from Mumbai you ignorant prick. We have utensils."

"Hey Kahn junior, as i'm sure you know about sushi rolls and geishas..." "I'm Laotian. Those are japanese things."

The teacher wasn't teaching about the sandwiches, she was using it as an example to teach something elese.   Think:

Mary has 12 pieces of bread.  How many PB&J sandwiches can she make?

An american kid knows it takes two pieces of bread to make a sandwich, a Somali might not.
