In other news, Sony ships over a million unbricked PS4s.

What a stupid f*cking article. Like Bareefer said, it's "hundreds of PS4s" out of at least a million sold. That's way less than 1%.

And out of "600 one star reviews" they couldn't find any that actually said "Amazon Verified Purchase"? I mean, I'm sure there are, but they couldn't put one up?

But we also have 91 redditors reporting issues! 91. NINETY. ONE. This is an epidemic.

/Not picking up either console for at least a year
//Still a non-story

Yes, right now this is a tempest in a teapot.  They are still within the acceptable failure rate for consumer electronics and as long as Sony doesn't play games with the effected customers this isn't a big deal.  That said in the social media world it's going to seem worse then it is.

/However, Sony does not want your PS4 back if it's infested with insects

I'm fairly sure at this point that if Sony had shipped a small number of PS4s coated with ricin powder and scorpions, there would be people fanning out across the internet as we speak to talk about acceptable rates of mortality in a new system.

In other news, with any new major electronic device and/or software, it's always best to wait a couple of months (or longer) for the bugs to be worked out before buying.

/And hey, price drops too

Oh no! They have a list of 91 REDDITOR's reporting problems!

Because Reddit is the bastion of truth on the internet. Nobody ever lies on there, especially in the gaming cesspools-- I mean the gaming subreddits.

Yeah sure it's only a few but imagine how pissed you be if it were your PS4 that bricked.  The people fanning the flames are pretty emotional about this. I can't say that my reaction after buying an expensive piece of electronics that didn't work would be any better.  If I unboxed my new Sony TV and it didn't work properly I would be pretty pissed, if I then went to return it and was told that I had to wait for days weeks or possibly months to get a replacement I would be livid.

Yeah, this is silly...if you have .0006% of units sold bricking...there's nothing really to write about of real importance.

When buying tech, you know there's always a chance of DOA.  The difference here is there's a limited amount of units right now, and let's be frank, it's hard to brag about having a PS4 and posting crappy res videos on YouTube about it if it's bricked, and you have to wait for your replacement.

I'm not buying either any time soon, but in the interest of honesty I probably WILL buy a PS4 this generation. I've typically liked the Xbox more, but the heavy advertisement saturation on the 360, combined with the 'features' of the xbone, and the higher price point, mean I'm just going with the less insufferable shiat sandwich who hasn't show an overt interest in assfarking me. Or at least is willing to pretend they aren't going to ASAP.

That said, this is farking stupid and you can do better. It's a lowball from you, and I expect more effort. C-

QFT.

Plus, if I'm going to have to spend $50/year for online access, at least PSN+ gives you good free games, unlike the dreck that xbox has been giving away lately

man, the differences in consoles this new gen are so slight as to make so little difference, that the only real deciding factor should be "do I want a DS4 or an Xbox controller".

both charging for multiplayer.  both give free games with gold (+) packages.  both are integrating advertising into the home screens.  yes - the xbox is more expensive, but I have said this before - when buying a core console that comes with a unit and one controller, 100 bucks is NOTHING.  By the time you add up everything you will want to buy with the PS4, extra controllers, games, HDMI cables, stands, semen receptacles, you will spend the same amount of money on it as an early adopter.

seriously.  the only real difference is the control.  the power in both is equitable.  the prices are not outside reason.  both are going to fark you to death with nickel and dime transactions, both are going to charge you to play online, both are trying their level best to move to digital downloads.

pick your favorite controller and go for it.

because Valve was BUILT on the success of the Half Life series, and then like a band that hates to play its hit song in concert, Valve refuses to give us what we actually want.

At this point I believe fans should if not boycott Steam, then at least refuse to give them any more damn money until they announce the only damn game that fans actually want.

Maybe if they had 0 bricked consoles, because that'd be a hell of an accomplishment.
But that said, I still don't buy electronics on day-one and this is a chance you take when you do so.
Well really it's a chance you take when buying electronics at all, but day-one electronics seem like they have a higher failure rate than say the same product after 6 months to a year.

it has taken far too long for the new gen consoles to hit market.

I don't know if I agree with that.  I get the feeling that if you forced Valve's hand, you'd end up with an entire game that's the equivalent of the "new" ending that was thrown into Mass Effect 3 to appease the fans.

It's pretty clear Xbox One has the advantage this generation. Graphical differences will be moot once developers learn the systems. It seems to actually have next gen ideas and room for innovation whereas the PS4 is simply an update in gaming power over the PS3. Basically a PS3.5

frepnog: and they STILL can't deliver a solid piece of tech.

Anybody who actually purchases electronic devices of any kind can easily see that the failure rate of PS4s so far is on par with that of other consumer electronics. Go on Newegg and pick a computer or computer component with a few hundred reviews and you'll see numerous complaints of it being DOA. When we order desktops for our users we have to RMA a couple every few orders because they arrive with some defective component or another.

You're full of crap. What are you REALLY whining about?

how many iPads ship DOA?

fact is that all this bullshiat fellating sony even in the face of hundreds of bricked consoles is damned ridiculous.  don't give me "electronic failure rates".  give me the failure rate of a new electronic device that was expected to sell one million units day of launch.

having hundreds of bricked consoles AT LAUNCH is goddamned ridiculous.

a 1-4 percent failure rate is expected over a period of years.  NOT day one.  every single console should have been quality tested.  This is obviously NOT the case, and is more indicative of Sony no longer producing the console in Japan in their own fabs, but farming it out to cheap manufacturing in goddamned china.  OF COURSE they are failing right and left, they are made of CRAP.

actually yeah there is a problem with sticks, there's a deadzone in the middle and to be precise you have to fudge the stick around... there's a reason console fps always have some sort of aim-assist

the other problem is sticks give people early arthritis because of the awkward movements needed to use them in fast-paced games

look.  I realize that the world isn't perfect and that electronics sometimes come off the line dead.  what I said, however, stands.  This isn't a failure rate of a piece of tech that sells\will sell a few hundred thousand over the course of a couple years before it is retired.  This is a next-gen gaming console that will sell over a million AT LAUNCH, and over 10 million during it's life.  Sony already WATCHED as the PS3 and Xbox 360 shat the bed over and over.

A bulletproof piece of tech should have been delivered.

But no.  We get a cheaply made toy from China that doesn't work.  Trust me - the failure rate on these things is going to be ASTRONOMICAL.

How quickly people forget when games consoles first started arriving DOA. Anyone remember when that started happening?

Hmm?

I'm >40 yrs old. Never heard of the term DOA or its equivalents being used to refer to consoles.

My Commodore 64 wasn't DOA.
My Commodore 128 wasn't.
My Atari 2600 wasn't.
My Atari 5200 wasn't.
My Colecovision wasn't.
My NES wasn't.
My SNES wasn't.
My TurboGraphix16 wasn't.
My Wii wasn't.
My PlayStation wasn't.
My PlayStation 2 wasn't.
My PlayStation 3 wasn't.

My xbox was, for two hours. Then it was Best Buy's xbox. " 'DOA'? WTF?? 'Red Ring of Death'?? WTF??"

If you can't tell the difference between all those items, and the last item, you deserve anything Microsoft does to you again.

I'm cutting Sony some slack on this.
