I don't know if adding "poo" to it magically changes it, but my mom has a cavachon and it is the worst dog in the world. Hyper, yippy, jumpy, bites, chews. She's sent it to two different training schools, one being where they train police dogs. It's still a small, furry, terrorist.

I'm troubled by the article using the words "pet" and "accessory" in the same sentence.  This is why we have animal shelters.  They're cute, but something is a little off in their faces.

They're called "mutts."

Still doesn't look as good as my bulldog or BT. At least my BT doesn't have to worry about formal wear either.

But the American Kennel Club does not recognize the new trend as an official breed

It takes them a while to do that, and it seems unlikely they'll rush to recognize a new tribrid.

Heck, it took them years to recognize the Tibetan Mastiff.

and one expert calls some specially bred small dogs expensive "gimmicks."

Possibly because they are (IMO, anyway).

Hypoallergenic? Citation needed.

Lots of breeders claim to have bred hypoallergenic cats and dogs, but none of these claims have stood up to actual scientific testing yet.

A year ago I would have disagreed with you, but then my in-laws lab (aka. "the meth lab") came to stay with us.  Never seen a dog with that much patience or love for their family before.

Dumb as a bag of rocks, but it's part of his charm.

He's huge but eats like he's a purse dog.  Laziest dog you'll ever see though, he'll run outside for maybe 5 min tops then want in so he can lay on my bed.

Speaking as a labrador owner, I can say they're okay, if you like stupid dogs, because let's face it: labradors are morons. And I know he's supposed to be a retriever, but holy crap, that dog freaks out, unless he's got something in his mouth.

Personally, I prefer herding dogs. They can be a little protective, but at least they have brains.

That's one of the reasons I want a Berner.  A bud had one while living in a 1 bedroom apartment.  His Berner was big for a Berner, but was fine in that space as long as it had a little outside time.  Didn't need a lot of exercise or space.  It was mostly quiet.  Didn't drool.  Smart as hell.  Passively friendly - approach it and it was fine, but it didn't try to make friends with everything that moved.

Then I saw it with kids.  Holy crap.  A toddler was hanging off its jowls.  The dog didn't growl.  Didn't try to shake the kid off.  Just stood there making whining noises til we saved it.

No worries, I knew it was a joke. He's a lovable good ball but I'm still surprised at the looks I get when people hear he's part Pit. My wife and I have even been called unfit parents because we dare to let the crazed killing machine around our 7 yr old. Doesn't seem to matter that said 7 yr old can hang from the killing machine's face and get nothing more than an exasperated sigh on return. That dog has endless patience for our son :)

Don't "citations" me, because I don't remember where I read it, but pitbulls are above average for dog vs. dog aggression, so the original joke about eating the toy wasn't off base.  However, pitbulls are below average for dog vs. human aggression.  And, yeah, pitbulls in my experience are about the most eager to please dogs I've ever dealt with.

That's how our big guy was until he got his dew claw ripped off from the deck (somehow he slid or and it got caught between the slats) and now he's very protective of the feet area.  So before kids would lay on top of him now he won't let that happen.

I love big dogs.  They are the nicest animals, lots of hair everywhere (which gets old very fast) but very sweet.

Meh, he's my first "aggressive breed" and, so far, I'm not seeing it. He's actually very passive (unless, we found out, my wife's home alone, takes him outside (He was going out on a leash before we finished the fence) and there's someone in the back yard, saaaay, a meter reader who hasn't made his presence known and tries to go all "alpha male"). Maybe the Mastiff balances him out, maybe he's just a wuss. Either way, we're happy with him.

Is there really a good reason to be breeding more dogs in this country, mutts no less, when 2-5 million dogs are euthanized each year? Hell, you could probably get 10 shelter dogs for what one of these designer dogs goes for, even pure breeds if you look a bit.

Don't breed or buy while shelter pets die.

Great. That's all the world needs: more 'designer' breeds. Ugh.

/have owned one pure bred dog - the husky we currently have - and will never, ever own a pure or 'specially bred' dog again. (she was rescued when the family that bought her from a puppy mill couldn't control her, because puppies are hard! She's sweet as can be, but has SO MANY health problems. She turned 8 this year and seems older than our 15 year old mutt)

I've got a purebred husky, but most definitely not a puppy mill dog.  They're one of the healthiest breeds out there, as they were genuine working dogs up until the 1920's, and even now many conformation breeders bring in racing line dogs to keep the breed up. When we get another pup, I'm going looking for one from a kennel that still mushes their dogs, or a shelter mutt that's at least half-husky.

My dog's nine now, and people still ask us "where'd you get your puppy?" she looks and acts so young.  I'd blame the condition of your dog on the puppymill assholes.  If the breeder isn't showing or racing, just pass.  But good on you for taking the husky in, so many people get one thinking "what a pretty doggie! so sweet!", and aren't ready for the hell-shedding, the growl-howling, and the generally hyperactive non-obedient personality.

And even though I'm hideously allergic to retrievers and hounds, I've never had any issues with our dog, even with the ridiculous shedding.  I think it's because she's not a living bucket of slobber.
