(Scientific American)   Liberals love wasting taxpayer money on basic science "research", like a $250,000 grant to study screwworm sex. Although it saved the livestock industry billions of dollars, Jesus would want us to promote screwworm abstinence instead   (scientificamerican.com) divider line 77

Trailltrader: "If you are sick, see a physician"- Jesus

What book of the bible is that quote from?  Must have missed it.

I'm okay with the submitter's comment.  There are many, many Christians) who falsely vilify science as worthless or even dangerous, while they're likely still alive because of it.   At the very least, their lives are certainly improved by it.  What's interesting is these "Christians" blast science with moronic comments here on Fark and other websites yet without science we wouldn't even have the internet to spread their ignorance.

There is nothing wrong with religion but when people use it espouse their personal beliefs wrapped in a thin veil of misinterpreted bible parables, they're just ass clowns.

Let me see if I understand this right; this is the information age, you obviously have access to the internet and you're asking ME to look up where Jesus said "If you are sick go see a physician"?

No, YOU go look it up.  I know where its at- if more people knew the bible the world would be a much better place.

No, Jesus said "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick." (Matthew 9:11)

When Jesus was on earth, He NEVER referred anyone to a Physician

God needs no middle men. When Jesus was on earth, when someone came to Him for healing, He never referred the person to Luke, the "Physician." Jesus healed the person directly and personally. And He healed him either with His Word - which we have today, in the form of the Bible - or He healed him with natural methods - clay, water, etc.

Jesus NEVER used drugs, although we know that some types of drugs were available in His time. When Jesus was on the Cross, He was offered a type of drug to ease His pain, but He refused it.

In the Bible, What was the consequence of seeking out anyone else except God for healing?

Asa, King of Israel sought out the physicians INSTEAD of depending on the Lord - and Asa DIED!

If more people who claim to know the Bible actually knew the Bible, the world would indeed be a much better place.

See, you are the one claiming it's there. You need to prove it. Otherwise you are just yelling words at the aether.

Jesus also said "YOLO!"

It's in the bible.

Well, if your fellow Christians weren't so god damned stupid with pushing the abstinence education instead of science, you might have an argument. As it is, the considerable number of "Christians" who vilify science reap the rewards of it every day.

The next line is: 32 "I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance"

It was an analogy for why he was eating with tax collectors and sinners and not those that were already on the right path

By creating a host of sterile male worms and releasing them in the wild, usda scientists eradicated the pest, saving the livestock industry billions of dollars.

Seems like this would have been a successful solution no matter how many times males and females had sex.  unless females could mate with each other.

Sorry.

If it makes you feel any better, I originally intended to use "conservatives" instead of "Jesus", but that made the headline too long.   These days, it seems there's not much difference.  You may petition a moderator to change the headline, if you find it too offensive.

Also, not that it matters, but Senator Proxmire was a Democrat.

These awards are great!  These are all great examples of how big fundamental science research can pay off.  Indeed, for a dirt cheap price, you get tons of fantastic innovation that can yield big benefits.

The method developed for the screwworms also works for a few other insects, like bollworms. So, once the method was discovered it's been reused for other problems.

Oh, and the elimination of screwworms has also made deer a nuisance because they also suffered from screwworms, and once they were brought under control the natural breeding patterns that had developed to make lots of deer. If not for american hunters they'd hit Malthusian limits and starve then go boom and bust.

But what you don't hear is how the medication, ursodiol, a medication that is used to treat overweight tea party rubes with gall stones, is produced from polar bears which we're actively trying to save for future research.

Ultimately, nothing will ever pay off like investment in basic research. No nation can make a better investment (Current RoI on the human genome project, 140:1 and counting), because when you do the basic research guess who gets first dibs on the fruits?

No, I think that was more of a dig on Conservative Right Wingers who claim to be representing God's word.

And another thing, if Jesus said "If you are sick, see a physician", then why are Right Wingers making it so hard for people to be able to afford to see one?
