Seems they only wanted $50,000 dollars. Compared to other things, that doesn't seem like that much, unless the district is really completely broke. But why build a library they can't fund?

Wow, those are some grossly incompetent people on that library board.

In contrast to subby's asinine headline, they've built several new libraries in Savannah and the surrounding area in the past decade or so.

I think there was a fark story about how some local govt got the bright idea to turn all these old lots into park space, only they didnt think to factor in the maintainence of the parks after they were done.

Fark that. Speaking from experience, I would never try to do anything like that via Fark again. I would strongly advise anyone who thinks it's a good idea to set up their own campaign OUTSIDE of Fark and not connect it in any way to this site.

"The library board of trustees submitted a budget of $50,000 for library operations in 2013 but only $28,000 was approved by the county government, said Humphries."

All this over a measly $22,000 bucks. Which is less than the individual compensation each commissioner gets.

Things like this happen, and then people from the South wonder why the rest of us use being from the South as a punchline.

I'm not saying this could only happen in the Bible Belt's shiny buckle.  But I am saying that, when you're a white guy driving poorly, people look at you and assume you're an a-hole.  When you're an Asian woman driving poorly, people look at you and assume Asian women can't drive.  Try not to play directly into known stereotypes if you want them to fade away.

I pointed that out to a southerner once. He got really mad, had absolutely no idea what larger point I was trying to make. It was like being on Fark only in real life. Plus his car was old and smelly.

$50,000 to fund a library location? What, do the employees all work for free? That is one teeny tiny budget. And they wouldn't even approve that much :(

You want to give these idiots money? What they need is a weekly allowance and someone to look over their spending habits before they get their next allotment.

$50,000 to operator for a year was too much? I'm amazed they could do it for so little. That's one middle class employee, or 2-3 poors. What about buying books, paying for the utilities, subscriptions, etc?

I'm wondering how long the director expected to keep a computer lab running and usable when his  total annual budget was that small.

The state built it with state funds with the understanding that the county will fund the operating budget.

That's a big issue out here in Hawai'i. They build things here left and right, and then basically abandon them to the elements when there's no budget left for ongoing maintenance.

But you know, the great George Carlin summed it up best when he said - "Think of how stupid the average person is, then realize that half of them are stupider than that."

Diogenes: pineapplesherbet: But why build a library they can't fund?

This question needs to be answered.  I suspect shenanigans of some sort.

The reason I ask; We have the awesomest library. 3 stories. Stone facade, sculptures and other artwork on the inside, reading rooms, teen room, conference or meeting room- there's even an emergency room with short wave radio and other ways of communicating, with a generator in case there's an emergency so bad that power lines and cellphone towers are down. There's wifi and computers, of course. Yes, I am bragging.

What I'm trying to say is, this isn't that big of a town. Most people have never heard of it. But when it came to budgeting for the new library, done and done. I guess it's just a matter of priorities.

BUT- we would never have built the library if there was no funding to RUN it.

/end brag
