That's a damn shame.

/winamp user since the last millenium

Makes me feel pretty damn old. LOVED Winamp...

I have Winamp on my PC and my Droid. It does a really nice job of wifi syncing.

2013-11-20 02:23:23 PM
I still use Winamp. And will forever.

2013-11-20 02:23:31 PM
I used Winamp for a long, long time.

But Foobar is better than Winamp by a mile.

2013-11-20 02:24:49 PM
Still use it, still love it

/sad progress is sad

I use it, but really only for tuning in to my old man's old time radio show once per week.

I use Winamp to remove stains from my carpet, taint & upholstery.
This news is rather upsetting to me.

If we are to go by his fark handle his taint has a habit of being stained. I also have him farkied as  "thick foggy flatulence"  for some reason.

I was hoping to see RealPlayer shiat the bed first.

I am sorry to see you go.

Not as sad as I was when Netscape went, but still sad for the bad-ass days of the 'net

I remember the first revision of WinAmp. It was great. I think it was version 3 or so where WinAmp was completely rewritten to accommodate all sorts of skinning and customization when it became this terrible bit of bloatware. Yes, I'm sorry to see it go, but it really already died when AOL acquired it, much like all of AOL's other acquisitions like Netscape.

Incidentally, I haven't had a dedicated MP3 playing software installed on my of my computers for years. I stream everything now. I wonder if the move towards streaming killed the market for WinAmp?

I'll still be using Winamp long after it's gone.  It's served me well these past 15 years.  Small memory footprint (especially for having 70,000 items loaded in its playlist) and its media library is quite handy.  A shame.

I seriously didn't even know RP existed any more. God, I hated everything about RealPlayer, especially in the early 2000s when every website required you to install it if you wanted to see their content.

Then again, I didn't know Winamp was still a big deal because I've been on a Mac since 2005. I only use my Windows machine as a media server for the PS3. I liked Winamp when I needed it long ago.

I'm on a Hackintosh. I use a hypervisor called Parallels whenever WINE can't handle a game I throw at it.

I hate having to use a VM

Kinda sad.  I was a huge fan of WinAmp...but I haven't had the need for it in years.

I use it every day and will never stop using it. I don't need no stinkin updates. I got the exe file backed up on 3 external hard drives and the cloud. It's with me for life.

Technically, I guess that would be a 'Staint'.

Still running Winamp on an old pc that's in a 1960's stereo cab.  Skinned to look like the rich maple that the cabinet is made out of.  Lots of multicolour LED lighting hidden inside that throbs to the beat, spinning CD beneath the radio tuner glass with a laser pointed at it.  It's still driven by the original tube amp and speakers.  I built it as an MP3 player prior to the advent of the iPod.

Used winamp since '97.

Now that I hear this news, I feel sad. It showed the way for how music software should be.

I guess, I'll download and save a installer just for the heck of it.

2013-11-20 04:13:17 PM
This saddens me.. It's still the best music player and its EQ is unmatched to anything else.

Still use it daily. Although, I have always used it in classic "skinny" mode so I never really used any of the features. I have a ton of playlists though, I better grab an update before the 20th!

Winamp 2.8 was the last true winamp.

lordargent: 2002-04-16 06:03:29 PM - The current version plays my MP3 and OGG files just fine. Anything they add is just extra shiat that I don't want, don't need, and never asked for in the first damn place.

The very first MP3 player for many a user I'm sure. Plus how cool was the Wesley Willis tagline it used?

Largely.  Or, if I need to play a music file on a desktop (which I do fairly often, but not often enough to build major playlists or anything), I'll pull out the Swiss Army Knife tool I'd use to play any of 14,000 other media formats... VLC.  Pretty? No. Really right for the task?  Not really.  Gets the cork out of the bottle? Yes.

You do realise Chimera will read the HDD's and can chain-load Windows's?  The trick is to pull every drive bar your blank soon-to-be-NTFS drive and THEN install Win7.  I dual boot my Hackintosh.  Usually I'm in Mavericks but sometimes I just want to game.

And as you're using Parallels you do have an install of Windows... legit or otherwise you can use.   If it's just an ISO then some command line trickery with dd can dump it to USB.

Brings me back to the BBS days. I had a few mp3s and winamp before I even had the internet.  I think I got internet later that year if I recall.

That was my memory, too, but I think the version 3 release came before the acquisition.  AOL may be the debbil, but as I remember it, they had already (just) blown off their own feet.
