(CBS 46 Atlanta)   Cobb County official explains why there will be no referendum on MOU to redirect $300 million to Braves stadium: a special election would have cost $400,000 and she couldn't in good conscience waste taxpayer dollars on that   (cbsatlanta.com) divider line 41

Is the irony tag off at a Divo concert?

She should consult with Chris Christie.  He knows a lot about wasting tax payer money on a special election.

She just wants anyone who doesn't read the signs and respect the law and order to serve hard time. That only happens in Cobb County, GA

OK, we get it, Atlanta is building a stadium and it's a deal full of bullshiat and a huge transfer of wealth from the average Joe to some fat cats. Just like everywhere else.

Can we get a tab just for this and maybe a few links about something else? Where's A-roid's tempertantrum thread?

This is all just a huge scam by the Mountie to bring a team back to Montreal. You can't trust The Quebeckers.

That's not the problem Mr. Butthurt Braves Fan.

It's that they're claiming the move is to improve parking and reduce traffic issues when they'll clearly be the same (if not worse) at the new Cobb County location.

FWIW, the Braves have been a model of consitency for 20 years and they have done a fantastic job drafting and developing young talent.

All that said, it's a damned shame that a local government will give a handout like this to a team owned by a corporation that has $26 billion in assets and generated $10 billion in revenue.

Meanwhile, Cobb County has a budget of $745 million.

I am not a Brave's fan, I was moaning because there have been a dozen threads about this shiat. It's no different than any other stadium deal, a bunch of politicians give a bunch of tax dollars to a few private interests. Big deal. A thread or two about it is cool, but c'mon man!

It's been a big deal because:
-Turner Field is just 17 years old when other MLB teams are playing in 100 year old stadiums
-the bullshiat excuses they're using
-the big questions about financing

Meanwhile we're filling Lake Union with sewage and cutting bus routes...

Cobb County is going to show us all how it's done in the big leagues.  Every other municipality gets hustled by stadium deals, but this one is going to work out.  They're going to show those corrupt snobs down in Atlanta how an honorable, business friendly government gets into bed with a multi-billion dollar corporation and gets things on its terms!  Suck it, Atlanta!  Woooooo!!!

2013-11-20 01:43:49 PM
No, you see a special election for the referendum would be a horrendous waste of public money and would force them to cut from elsewhere in the budget.

The stadium, otoh, is being used for sports. Therefor it's worth a raise in taxes. Because Braves! Fark Yeah!

/Personal opinion. Every pro sports franchise should be required to adopt the name of where they actually play. State named teams usually get a pass, but there should be teams named the Cobb County Braves, the Maryland Redskins, the Arlington Cowboys, etc...

To be honest, most 100 year old stadiums are better than the garbage from the 80s and 90s. The multi-purpose cookie cutter stadiums deserve to be blown up, but not at taxpayer expense.

Cookie-cutter multi-purpose stadiums were built in the 50s, 60s, and 70s, chief.  Single purpose stadiums came back in vogue in the 80s, with Camden Yards the most notable success story.

Camden Yards opened in 1992. The last concrete multipurpose ugliness was the Skydome, which opened in 1989.

So close. The Skydome opened in June 1989, but Tropicana Field (called the Suncoast Dome at the time) opened in March 1990.

As a Cobb County resident, they can knock off the robo calling.  I don't care as long as my taxes don't go up.  If they want to raid the funding from the Cumberland block improvement district then so be it.

There are people here who wouldn't vote to replace an obsolete firehose because their house isn't on fire at the moment.  Though we do seem to like to gobble up as much federal matching dollars as we can get.

No they dont, try again.

Its amazing to me how many idiots inside the perimeter just doesnt get this location will allow more fans to attend games, everytime you saw a game on TV the stadium looked over half empty yet they would announce attendance as 35K. It was because 10-15K of season ticket holders would never show up because they didnt feel like fighting traffic, traffic was cited as the most common answer for missing games.

Since most of the season ticket holders live up in that area it seems a moot point.

You mean like the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim?

There might be a flaw in your plan.

I'm getting a kick out of this Cobb County stadium business. For almost 20 years now, I've rolled my eyes at people who claim that Los Angeles can't support an NFL team, while they ignore the actions of the two scumbags that ran the Rams and Raiders. AEG *finally* got the message: no taxpayers money for stadiums, but once Tim Leiweke left AEG, woops, wingnut Philip Anschutz popped up and started in with the "partnership with the city and county of Los Angeles" nonsense. So, effectively, the Farmers Field at the convention center stadium is dead.

/Love NFL Sunday ticket
