I got a tour of some Nimitz class carrier (Think it was TR) and saw women who were cultivating facial hair.  You'd have to be blind not to notice they were ugly.

jigger: Are they saying that the woman in the picture isn't attractive? She's all right in my book.

No... the opposite:

"There is a general tendency to select nice looking women when we select a photo to go with an article (where the article does not reference a specific person). It might behoove us to select more average looking women for our comms strategy. For example, the attached article shows a pretty woman, wearing make-up while on deployed duty. Such photos undermine the rest of the message (and may even make people ask if breaking a nail is considered hazardous duty),"

And if you can't see that she would clean up very well, I don't know what to tell you. Get her out of the field, in a pair of glasses that compliment her face (or contacts), a little makeup, and an outfit that matches her color wheel better than BDUs, she'd look very different.

Style the strawberry-blonde hair, and consider that she's working out at least 3 mornings a week...

See now I find her sexy in a geek way. It's the frex and somewhat reddish hair. The disheveled, save-me look works for her.

Couldn't they get her a helmet that fits? And what's with the dirt-blocked gun barrel?

TFA makes a good point. Using dolled up pretty girls as models implies that a combat-related job is "so easy you can do it without breaking a nail or smearing your eyeliner." This may cause women who cannot handle the job to apply for it and subsequently fail themselves and their fellow troops miserably, which of course promotes the "women can't do this job" stereotype.

Better to show the people who do those jobs as they really are: dirty, sweaty, tired, burdened by heavy equipment, etc. You'd have a better chance of attracting qualified applicants instead of pretty, pretty princesses who can't do the gig.

/Ah don't care how hot you are. Everybody looks like hell warmed over for the duration of Basic Training.

Cymbal:

I think I understood one or two of those sentences.

Can you say that again, translating the military jargon for us common folk? I mean what the hell does "dumber than a bag of hammers mean" anyway?

Uh, yeah, they do.
I worked with a guy in the  [United States Air Force]that was clearly recruited to the position of poster boy [Security Police......MP for the AF]. His assignment was the [place the president lives]. He did it for a while and was  [transfered] out. He looked like [Doctor Frankenfurter's = Tim Curry's character in the Rocky Horror Picture Show.  His invention was a muscle bound, blond hair sex toy of a man] but [35-10 is the old AF grooming and appearance regulation.  In the AF "35-10" is often used as an adjective to describe someones appearance]
He literally knew only the manual of arms for the [rifle]. That was it. He had [6 stripes = Tech Seargent (E-6)]and was ["dumber than a bag of hammers" = full retard]. I wouldn't even let him drive and I had but [two stripes = Airman First Class (E-3)]. His role was to look pretty in random photos anyone took of any thing at the [place the president lives]. He must have farked up to get sent to my  [base......people in the AF don't say post]because as cushy as it was ([No humping planes = working with or around airplanes in some fashion]) it was still in the [farking desert......the author of the post was based in some desert location with TSgt Retard].

Hope this helps

FullMetalPanda: Cymbal: Maybe this will also reduce the amount of sexual assaults female soldiers endure.

Oh who am I kidding.

This is what I don't understand...

They have guns and access to other things that go bang and boom... why the fark would you rape a woman and think nothing of it?  All they have to do is wait for you to be engaged in a fire fight and either not watch your back so they don't have to kill you or just kill you.

"

Why don't you ask the thousands of men sexually assaulted in the military?

And that is not a new thing.  I remember talking to a WWII vet who talked about going thru Italy and he saw a couple service members going at it in a bombed out building, they beat the shiat out of him and raped him for sticking his nose where it did not belong.

Here is something more recent though.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/24/us/in-debate-over-military-sexual- as sault-men-are-overlooked-victims.html?_r=0

" In its latest report on sexual assault, the Pentagon estimated that 26,000 service members experienced unwanted sexual contact in 2012, up from 19,000 in 2010. Of those cases, the Pentagon says, 53 percent involved attacks on men, mostly by other men.  "

Subby meant "corps", not "corp", right?

I recently learned something about News Corp, the parent organization to Fox News. Although the name is short for "News Corporation", it seems that the people who work there pronounce it with a silent "p", as though it were "News Corps".

They should just go ahead and call it "News Corpse", since killing journalism appears to be its main goal.
