Wow.

2013-11-19 10:09:30 PM
That looked pretty spectacular. On the other hand, the car seemed to shed all of its energy spinning on one axis for a fairly long time. It didn't seem to snap back or change rotation. I'd think that would have protected the driver somewhat. Not that I'd want to try it... it's still got to hurt a lot, but the stopping fast bit is what injures you. I nearly died at half that speed years ago, but it involved wrapping the car around a tree.

Wow. Glad the guy survived.

The most violent 209 mph speed racing crash you'll see in probably ever.

I was on the infield, turn 1, for the '95 Indy 500 when Stan Fox crashed on lap 1

racingaccidents.files.wordpress.com

racingaccidents.files.wordpress.com

Can still remember the sound of that crash.
Had to have been close to 200 mph.

He survived, then got killed a few years later on a highway.

Now that's what I call drifting.

/reminds me of the time i went down in the back country at Stowe at about 60 MPH

That's not anywhere close to the most violent and insane land speed racing crash I've ever seen.

Of course, I spend my weekends watching video-clip shows, so I've seen way more than I probably should have.

Again! Again!

When I think "violent crash" I think of a vehicle that actually hits something.

A lot of energy gets shed in a rollover and these cars have roll cages and the drivers are strapped in well.

// vs an accident here from a week or two ago where one of those little square box vehicles rolled at like 60-80 and two people were ejected (one died, one had major injuries) and the third person wore a seat belt and walked away with minor injuries.

// safety restraints, it works biatches

And this is why a Honda Insight is only used for on road driving and is designed for high mileage and not speed!

Also, this is the most violent 200+ mph crash I've seen in a while.

// he got banged up but survived, crazy to see a wile-e-coyote style dust cloud getting thrown up from the bike

Nicely made roll cage.

Quite obviously worth every penny it cost and then some.

Someone is probably going to get a lot of new business out of this. Not too many people can say their roll cage allowed a driver to walk away from a crash like that.

I've seen worse. But I'm very familiar with motor sports. That was a well built car.

I heard there was a pretty bad wreck in sports car testing at Daytona today. Been looking for footage but not much out there.

Not bad, but for real scary try it on a push bike down a volcano without the safety of a roll cage.

I was there, in the infield in Turn 4 for that one. He was airborne, nose down, and starting to spin down the catch fence as he passed us. Ugliest wreck I've seen.

But it's good that the cage was strong enough to survive a Hurricane, as he was traveling at speeds that put the tach needle close to the Big Red line, it was clearly he could not keep all Fourtax on the ground.

Bobby Allison's wreck was pretty comparable to that,

And by airborne, I mean that AJ Foyt's car actually passed *under* the 43 while the wreck was going on.

Yeah. My understanding is that usually the more violent the crash looks the better it is for the driver. Usually.

Hammond managed to recover from getting farking brain damage as a result of the crash. He's lucky to be alive and even luckier that he's not a vegetable.

The crazy thing is, that one could have actually ended up even worse than it did.

That didn't look like a fun ride, but I've personally witnessed a few drag strip disasters as well as a few NASCAR that were much worse.  They keep that land-speed stuff pretty safe.

/I really need to half-cage my Tempest

There's an animgif around the Internet. I don't cringe easily, but that was rough. As far as 'most violent crash' goes, that one sets the bar pretty farking high.
