"They were asking for cheek swabs," she said. "They would give $10 for that. Also, if you let them take your blood, they would pay you $50 for that."

I'm OK with that.

"I gestured to the guy in front that I just wanted to go straight, but he wouldn't let me and forced me into a parking spot," she said.

That...I'm not OK with...

Always stay calm and don't get flustered in non ordinary situations. Your wits will come back to you and you can then verbally say that you don't want to take part in this voluntary study. Serious. Not being sarcastic.

Here's how I would have handled that interaction:

Them: Pull over so we can take a sample.
Me: Are you a cop?
Them: No.
Me F*ck off.
Them: Step out of the car.
Me: Your mom is a c*nt. (drives off)

2013-11-20 01:10:57 AM
Yeah. I can see how DNA sampling is going to provide statistics on drunk driving.

Dude, I'm so poor right now I'd make laps around the place until I felt dizzy from blood loss.

When they ask you if you're classified as human, just say:

And I can see how DNA sampling is going to be anonymous.

Alcoholism is hereditary

I agree completely. Still, this behavior is too much like "papers, citizen."

Except it's not papers, it's DNA that can forever be associated with you. For crimes. And safety. And deciding you need to be sent to room 101.

We'll all be sequenced in 10 years anyway. Heck, we could do it at today's prices for 10% of what we currently spend on healthcare as a nation in the USA.

Disobeying is the best decision. It's not like they'll shoot you or beat you or harass you or assault you...

Oh, wait.....

Test it right then and there and destroy the samples in my presence and I'll be happy to take your money.

$7.9 million to see if people that were drinking/taking drugs would submit to a voluntary test because that's what it comes down to, nothing more, nothing less.

I suggest he is a troll. Or a moron. Actually, both are quite intellectually deficient, so the distinction is irrelevant.

Driving through it would result in shootings/beatings/boot-stompings.

2013-11-20 01:54:10 AM
You know, while it's basically impossible to do anything meaningful to the police in this situation, you know who is vulnerable here? The researchers. Strongarming 'volunteers' for a study like this is a huge breach of research ethics, and the scientific community really doesn't like that sort of thing. A major breach of ethics in a study with human participants can be a career-limiting move for the main investigators if word gets out.

It was part of a government research study aimed at determining the number of drunken or drug-impaired drivers.

Just wait until they start using MRAPS with machine gunners at these road blacks for "voluntary" sampling.

Wasn't Obama against weapons of war being used on our streets?

By the way, DUI checkpoints are not allowed in Texas, as the state gov't interprets them as unconstitutional.

Any Texan stopped by this thing would have rightly been freaked the hell out.

First deliveries of over 500 initial MRAPS are already taking place.

Collaborators and facilitators of the Orwellian dream is my guess.

You don't have constitutional rights with a private company.....usually rights only apply to the government and the people.

What part is the conspiracy? That even more military gear is getting distributed to police departments via the 1033 program?

They have a paper trail, it's pretty well known.

I'm only down for it if the safety gained is only by perception and not actual safety. I ask myself, when the fist of a TSA agent gets shoved into the exposed backside of a 70 year old grandmother, do I feel safer? And the answer is usually, yes. Because if we'd do that to an innocent 70 year old, think what we'd be willing to do an actual criminal.

Oh, hell no.

First, I'd ask if I was being detained or arrested.  If no, then the next words out of my mouth are "Then I'm free to go, right?

If they say no then I'd ask for the guy's name and badge number and ask under what charge I'm, being held.  After that, I call the number of my legal insurance carrier and request a lawyer, PDQ, then clam up.

TFA:

"Fort Worth police earlier said they could not immediately find any record of officer involvement but police spokesman Sgt. Kelly Peel said Tuesday that the department's Traffic Division coordinated with the NHTSA on the use of off-duty officers after the agency asked for help with the survey. "
