Remember that while basic black is always good, it is important to accessorize with a dash of color. Just because they're colorblind doesn't mean everyone else is.

So it can bark. A house is not a home without a dog outside barking its ass off all day long. Keeps tigers away.

I never cease to be amazed by people who live in the cold lattitudes and leave their dog outside for the entire winter. Apparently alot of people see a dog and think it's like a wolf and should be able to live comfatably outdoors through the winter....................

They have no conception of "breeeding" and how it affects these animals, let alone that they are "domesticated" and not at all conditioned to live in these brutal conditions.

...and no, I'm not talking about sled dogs..........

Leaving any kind of Lab outdoors for the entire Maine winter is cruel.

My Pyr laughs at your silly "cold" warnings as she sleeps outside till it gets in the 20's - then it's garage time. She's got 5 acres to roam on and several smaller "neighborhood" dogs to keep in line.

If you don't put them in cold weather (freezer), are they gonna be fresh six month from now?

Exactly.  We have tornado sirens around here that they test Saturdays at noon.  Where I am, the dogs barking up and down the street are louder and more effective than the sirens when they are testing.

My two dogs help out.  I think they are the loudest on the street when they want to be.  Suck it, neighbors.

Good to see another Pyr owner.  Mine practically begs to go outside when it's below freezing because it's more comfortable.

One of the many upsides to living in LA.  Not the weather part, but the fact people who would pass a knife fight without question will lose their minds over a dog left in a car.  You can seriously not leave a dog in your car in a gas station with all the windows a third open without people eyeballing you to see how long you leave them.

My goldendoodle occasionally lets out a single monstrous low pitched bark which silences the neighborhood dogs, about the only time he makes noises that aren't happy little grunts.

*sigh*  I'm in the middle of racing to get this lovely friendly intact stray boy that showed up last weekend scheduled for the vet, a screendoor to put between rooms since he and my other 3 have to get to know each other, and figure out when I can do that because I can't just toss them all in the house and leave for work for 9+ hours.  But he's a doll and I will NOT leave him out in the winter.  It can get cold here, and it's starting to cool off pretty good at night.  (18-25F)

Gotta get him in.  Two of mine were rescued from a snowbank a few hours after they were born, I'm not leaving this one!  And he needs to get cut, if nothing else.

You have a rock that barks? I want one!

/Being deprived of the company of the rest of the pack is more important to the dog than the cold.

Me too, could never understand why people let their garages fill up with junk while the way more valuable car sits outside.  That's just stupid.  Not to mention having to clear the car off when it snows or there is x-heavy frost.

Dog in house all the time in winter except for Walk time, or she has to eliminate.

Car in garage all the time (except for work, etc.)

KingKauff: In the late fall through winter, it's hard to keep my Akita/Huskie mix inside. The colder it gets, the more he wants to be outside.

I had a Husky that used to dig himself a little dent in the snow and curl up and go to sleep. I had to drag him inside in the winter. My current dogs aren't as crazy about winter and will, for the most part, go out, do their thing and come right back in.

It's one thing to have a dog with a job outside, or a barn cat. They're not tied to the end of a rope or in a tiny cage getting bored.

I don't understand the people who have a dog tied up at the end of the yard. What's that dog do? Why bother having the dog at all just to feed it and keep it tied up?

Weather-proofing your elephant

When weather-proofing your elephant, it is very important to measure twice and cut once. I suggest you start with the floor. Is it hardwood? It will scuff if you don't protect it, so I suggest an acrylic covering and then some nice Indian or African rugs, depending on your elephant's provenance.

Once you have the floor covered, take a good look at the walls. Should they be painted or wall-pappered. Remember, you will have to match your elephant to the walls, not the carpet, as elephants are bulky and form a natural focal point for a room.

As for furniture, I suggest decorating around the elephant. A bull elephant can be ten to fifteen feet at the shoulder. It is hard to miss unless you use the same wallpaper or paint. This is why I recommend carefully matching your elephant to the walls.

However, if you don't care for monochromatic decoration and are confident in your flair for colour and pattern, by all means weather-proof your elephant in a carefully chosen wallpaper or paint.

upload.wikimedia.org

This weather-proofed elephant is greatly enhanced by the addition of a picket fence to keep neighbourhood dogs and cats away.

You may find that the first time you weather-proof your elephant it is easier to use tapistry, silk or paint rather than custom fitting wallpaper. The use of a repeating motif, however, can give you the best of both worlds. The elephant in this room is so well done that it is barely noticeable.

Our childhood dog was part dachshund. I remember him in the deep snow when we were kids. You'd see him pop up, and then pop up a bit further on, and then pop up again as he leapt along in the snow, sometimes with only his head visible. It was so funny. Like some kind of mechanical toy.
