bdub77: Eddie Adams from Torrance: In other news, the number of reported rapes in the military dropped by 90% this year.

Also, this just in.. the number of "I was farked by a ghost while I was sleeping" incidents has risen sharply.

That's racist.

Ghost, not spook.

No progress on elder wand or remembrance stone

Why? We already have all sorts of weapons, as well as extraordinary rendition and plausible deniability.  The wand's an inferior weapon, and the stone's superfluous.

KellyX: "Harry Potter fans need to chill-these technologies won't make someone standing in front of you disappear. At least not yet."

Because prior to Harry Potter, there was never any mention in novels or movies about invisibility cloaks...

Based upon the Google ngram viewer, the first published use of the phrase "invisibility cloak" was about 1975.

Suckmaster Burstingfoam: American tax dollars at work! Cuz the occupation of Iraq would have worked out so much better if the Americans had invisibility cloaks.

The focus should be on detection avoidance and solutions that reduce signatures to cloak Special Operations Forces' presence in the area of operations. These technologies must be rugged, lightweight, compact, waterproof, and operable in all light and weather conditions and must be comparable or better in performance (speed, capacity, armor, weapon integration, etc.) than current capabilities.

Optical cloaking is already a reality. It doesn't yet meet the criteria above, but the ability to blend into the landscape already exists.

Hermione_Granger: Wtf is a Remembrance stone?

Hermiiiioonneeeee... I think Subby mixed it up Resurrection Stone with Remembrall.

/now if you'll excuse me, I have to go tame the dragon

The passive form of the technology is already deployed, although not as widely as it might be.  If there were a will and a budget, then tanks, soldiers, etc. could be cloaked the way some aircraft already are.

In TFA, the new wrinkle is figuring out how to go from the passive technologies of the state of the art status quo to active technologies.  This is looking pretty feasible.  At the very least, while it may be a long way off before one can make objects "invisible", it's not at all a stretch to imagine little vehicles that are made "supervisible", pretending to be a lot bigger than they really are.

/my 'invisible' bomber wing is coming to your town.  You're freaking out and the best news for the both of us is that it's not even there. Shoot me down.

Hogwarts has a library for a reason. If that fails, seriously, there's Google. There is no excuse for shoddy scholarship, let alone for it to receive a greenlight.
