I mean, at least it was a historical reference so they must be teaching them something. Unlike some of our other middle-manager factories.

Too soon?

/Yes it is.

They were actually honoring the noble Indian with their "Trail of Tears" reference. Nothing but a bunch of white people getting offended on someone else's behalf. And besides, my best friend, Chief Totally Real and Not Made Up for an Argument, thought it was funny.

They should've gone with "Mess with us and you'll go home with a Wounded Knee."

OK usually I think this kind of thing is BS and people trying to be PC (such as the Redskins crap) but this one really, really goes too far.

2013-11-19 02:08:12 PM
I have no problem with this.

How could I? If it's perfectly OK and not at all racist to call a team "the Indians," then what's wrong with this?

/I don't care, I'm rooting for the Brooklyn Kikes anyway

I wonder how many trail of tears survivors will be pissed at this?

(I had a tongue-in-cheek theoretical example of their next sign, but was too horrified at the possibility to post it...)

Seriously, what in the hell is wrong with people, where referencing a genocidal massacre in a sporting event at a high school is somehow just a "joke"?

2013-11-19 02:12:51 PM
"The school and the students have shown no remorse for the sign (as expected) and the students have claimed ignorance and/or that it was just a "joke". Sorry, but the Indian Removal Act of 1830 and the death of thousands of Native Americans is not a joke."

No offense but I doubt many teenagers (let alone most Americans) are even vaguely familiar with the Indian Removal Act of 1830...

My high school mascot was the Cowboys, and every year we played the Chiefs and we played the Indians.

And we'd always have a sign that said "GO COWBOYS - SCALP THE INDIANS".

Granted that was the late 1970s, but I wonder if they still do.

This

That was the most surprising part of the whole incident to me.  Not that cheerleaders would be insensitive jerks, but that they even knew about the trail of tears.

This is all the time and energy I have to attribute to this incomprehensible moral outrage.

I hope it helps.

Maternity leave?  Perhaps the person in charge of sign approval should just leave permanently, seeing as they apparently haven't discussed guidelines for appropriate signage with any of their charges.  This is an outrage, and my 1/16th demands reparations.  All 'legal' cheerleaders should raise money for Indian Awareness groups by way of Bikini Car Washes.

What's the point of winning the genocidal massacre in the first place if 150+ years later you can't make a joke about it. Seems rather pointless to me.

You are tough but fair.

Age of consent is 16 in bama so the freshmen and sophomores have to keep their thongs on.

You're assuming the freshmen and sophomores aren't at least 18. It is Alabama, after all.

I like how we're going to pretend this is new, rather than pointing out that people have been making this reference for decades. But in a world where calling someone a b*tch on Twitter is now "bullying," I suppose this qualifies as an atrocity on par with...the Trail of Tears.

You are so on point. People have been treating each other badly for years, so we should just let it be. No reason to change, or grow, or become more civilized.

Most high school and junior high students probably know more about American History than many adults do.  Having spent my younger years in Alabama, I can tell you that Native American history is a big part of history in the area.  I can't any more, but if you would have asked me in Junior High, I could outline most of the major native american tribal borders (emphasis on major).  I knew who the leaders were on both sides of several of the major battles, which ones allied with which immigrants, etc.

As long as we continue to "honor" those we murdered by naming teams after them, the remark is no worse.

So the Red Mesa Redskins (HS Football Team) on Navajo Reservation...is what?

I'd have to check, but I'm pretty sure the Navajo Nation has committed relatively few genocides in its history.

Almost as insensitive as naming your team the Indians, but not quite.

I went to a catholic prep high school, where 4 out of our graduating class of 250 went to Harvard.
Our main football cheer when an opponent scored on us was:

"That's all right.
That's ok.
You're going to work for us one day."

Not really what I'm saying. Just pointing out that 90% of the people acting as though this is a travesty did something similar themselves at that age. So get off the holier-than-thou schtick.

I went to a high school (Homewood, in Birmingham, AL) that used to play that school.  All our pep rally banners were kind of like that--lots of Massacre McAdory, Lynch Leeds, Shackle Shades Valley, Hang Hoover, etc.
