To be fair: he was really, really good at shaking people down in court.

Pffft.  Amateurs.  Here in Baton Rouge the first shot was fired in the ambuance chaser wars by an attorney advertising that they only charge 25% instead of the usual 33% or 40%.  Be interesting to see how it turns out, or if the trial lawyers association slaps him down for trying to bring down the rest of their fees.

In all seriousness, Edwards is the worst kind of lawyer.  He's almost unbelievable - like some sort of anti-tort strawman creation, except he's real.

The "link" between poor obstetrician care and cerebral palsy is where he made a lot of his money.  There is no real link.

Pffft, old news.  We have one of those guys in Phoenix for years.  Also, we are the home of the first Attorney who advertised, and challenged the ABA restrictions to the US Supreme Court.  You're welcome.

Pants full of macaroni!!: Why is this shiatstain still alive?

This. I remember the shill for one of the unions doing some book tour about how terrible Walmart was for America, biatching about how they underpaid their staff, kept as many people as they could at part time, etc. Doing the book signing in a Starbucks right next to a Walmart. When someone pointed out that everyone in the Starbucks except the manager was part time, earning the same rate of pay, he just deferred onto more about how evil Walmart was.

Look, I get it. You don't like Walmart. But don't be a farking hypocrite shiatstain.

It would be great once a politician is out of office that we could send them someplace where they could not be in contact with the outside world for the rest of their lives. And they could only interact with each other

That's what I'm talking about. The guy's been a flaming a-hole opportunist since day 1. It took him getting caught blatantly cheating on his dying wife while he was running for president and denying his bastard child for the Dems to throw him under the bus... and you still describe him as "intelligent". I can't stand Palin, but even she's not that dumb.

My saying he is intelligent isn't defending him.  It's like saying he's white.  He is.  He is a white, intelligent asshole who does stupid things.

you're confusing "intelligent" with "says things I want to hear". I'll agree that Edwards is very good at saying things people want to hear.

As mentioned, I can't stand Palin either: ergo, I'm kind of objective in my opinions on either of them (and by "objective" I mean my loathing of both balances the scale I use to compare their relative merits).

So, political views aside, let's assume that Trig is Palin's love child from her "menage a trois" with Donald Trump and a Sasquatch (biological father still indeterminate but circumstances leaning towards The Donald). In such a case, she was still smart enough to avoid being caught and successfully covered it up.  This trumps Edwards' competence.

Stupid is as stupid does. Edwards got caught: Palin didn't.

Nemo's Brother: Just a few years ago, you liberals loved this man.

I wouldn't say that is fair. Edwards was always loved by the sort of people who ignore a person's past actions (or lack thereof) and just listen to what is promised. I mean, he jumped from nothing to Senator to Presidential candidate without finishing his term and his voting record was barely there. More sensible liberals recognized that the man was useless from the get-go and luckily, in this case, they wisely kept him from securing office higher office.

Edwards was caught because he was a nationally well-known figure at the time (2004 VP candidate, etc) and was pursued relentlessly by a well-funded group. Palin was an unknown to most then.

Exactly. Yet the dumbass knew that and still handed himself to them on a silver platter. If you're running for president, don't sneak away to cheat on your dying wife by rendezvousing with a psycho-tramp at the Beverly Hilton.

Seriously: the Beverly Farking Hilton! Might as well just have hooked up on the couch of "Fox and Friends" during  the live morning broadcast.

He was caught visiting her and the kid (at the Beverly Hilton) after he'd ended his campaign.

I was never a big fan, I just find it bizarre how he's so particularly demonized. He's a private citizen now with no hope of being a successful politician. Meanwhile, Gingrich delivered divorce papers to his first wife when she was in the hospital; that's OK and he can run for president in 2012 because she didn't die? (He continued to lie about it in 2011, claiming she filed for divorce, despite his affair being public knowledge and court documents that show his wife trying to block the divorce despite it.) And of course there's Clinton, Cain, Sanford, Vitter, Hyde, etc etc etc etc etc.

It just seems like he's someone Republicans like to bring out as a whipping boy as somehow representative of the Democrats, as part of rationalizing to themselves the "virtue" of Republicans over Democrats.

As for as your "private citizen" argument, he was still on the lecture circuit at the time keeping himself alive politically: he was still a public figure by his own choice.

As far as being "pursued relentlessly by a well-funded group. ", who would that group consist of? Don't jump to conclusions that it had to be the GOP.  Who would have benefited and who would have access to his inner circle? It's apparent that someone in his inner circle dropped a dime to somebody.  I doubt that they dropped a dime to the Republicans. However, it's quite easy to see someone who worked on his campaign talking to another Democrat. He was set up, but most probably by a fellow Democrat who wanted him out of the picture permanently. I can easily see Axelrod or the Clintons dropping the axe (or any of a dozen folk he managed to piss off).

That being said, he still handed himself to them on a silver platter and has only himself to blame for it.
