My favorite part of the article:

"It's much harder to create demand and people question our innovation and design skills like people never used to," said Schiller. He admitted that Samsung "weakened the world view of Apple as this great designer and innovator."

Sorry, but when you directly rip off a sci fi series and movie, both Star Trek and 2001 had tablet like devices, and also take credit for making something that was already in existence years before, Microsoft and HP had tablets out before Apple, you tend to look like jackasses. Now product marketing Ill give them as they did create a market for common people to just buy a tablet, meaning you did not need a reason other then "I want one!"

Of all things, this annoys me the most when people make Apple out to be some kind of innovator in technology. Tablets existed for decades. It's like saying that McDonald's invented the hamburger. You can credit them for being in the right place at the right time for pushing a tech no one thought they needed for years, but we can't pretend they are inventing things like that. Ditto for the iPod. I had a creative zen player I loved, but damned if Apple didn't invent portable music, to the extent that top 100 inventions of all time lists put the iPod in the top ten.

Completely agree and love getting into arguments with Apple fanboys about that. And I used to have an old Roxio Lyla mp3 player from a year before the iPods hit the market. Always brought that thing out when people made comments about Apples new invention that will revolutionize the music world.

I do remember seeing my first tablet too while I was in college and thought, "That was awesome. I want one!" I do not recall what exactly it was but it was a Microsoft tablet. Math professor used it to link with the projector and do math problems while walking around the classroom. Learned a lot by having the professor do that.

Just look on Fark in some of the Apple threads and you'll find your answer for sure. But you do realize there are people that are THAT stupid out there. Ive met some on the internet that believe Call of Duty was the first FPS ever created and that 20 years of gaming history was rewritten to make CoD look like it was just copying a bunch of other games. And that is a more stupider thing to believe then Apple inventing something.

That article doesn't include a single quote from a person claiming Apple invented those things. It's just an article similar to Fano's post - claiming that other, unnamed, unquoted people say that, and gosh, they're wrong:
"... manypeople make the mistake of thinking the company invented them outright...  A lot of people credit Apple with... etc."
Who? There's not a single quote from a real person there.

Apple never claimed they invented the tablet. You do know that the Fark headline isn't actually their words, right?

I mean, saying I have a blind spot - all I'm asking for a single quote from some actual person, somewhere in the world, claiming Apple invented any one of these or a thousand other products, and you keep dredging up quotes accusing such people of being wrong... but never actually showing that such people exist. How is that not a huge blind spot?

Also, if you check the first three minutes, he's talking about all the other digital music players that existed. It'd be a bit silly to have a three minute presentation of competitor's music players and then claim your new product is the first music player, no?

I find it hard to even search for it because it is mostly by implication. Like finding a quote of Mussolini bragging that he made the trains run on time. Most of my searches result in somebody going on about whatever new iThing, and someone saying "you know, Apple didn't invent it" with the original person claiming they never said that.

I stick with the analogy that it's like the assumption that McDonalds invented the hamburger or that Ford invented the automobile. They were awesome at marketing, but they didn't invent the shiat.

Watching the keynote it feels like an early version of what Apple's marketing machine evolved in to. Yeah he spends the first bit talking about what currently is out there (and doing a shiatty numbers and price/song comparison) including the category they want to be in, hard disk music player that holds about 1000 songs. He then says "that's what we are introducing" but says it is a "Quantum Leap forward" and "the first time you can carry your entire music collection in your pocket." So yeah, he acknowledges they aren't the first in the market but then with the next breath implies how absolutely ground breaking and revolutionary their product offering is.

And that is at the developer's conference. With their actual marketing campaigns, over time, they certainly seem to imply that whatever new thing they are putting out is totally magical, revolutionary, ground breaking, the first of its kind, etc.

Theaetetus: Can you find a quote from anyone claiming that Apple invented the tablet or portable music?

Apple's CEO, Tim Cook, claiming they invented "the modern tablet."

Talking with Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher today at the D: All Things Digital conference, Tim Cook explained why the iPad wasn't the same as the Mac. "The tablet is different," said Cook. "It can do things that aren't encumbered by what the PC was. We didn't invent the tablet market, we invented the modern tablet."

At this point, I think it's reasonable to give up on any "quote" from a journalist or other secondary sources.  As with the Jobs "quote" above, Cook didn't say that. Instead, he talks about how tablets have been around for more than 10 years, but what Apple did was to abandon the legacy PC UI.

Fano: I find it hard to even search for it because it is mostly by implication. Like finding a quote of Mussolini bragging that he made the trains run on time. Most of my searches result in somebody going on about whatever new iThing, and someone saying "you know, Apple didn't invent it" with the original person claiming they never said that.

Yeah, and that's my point. You're claiming that Apple fanboys are saying that Apple invented something and gosh, aren't they stupid because they didn't know that a version of that thing existed for X years, but they never actually said that stupid thing. It's the same as the old Al Gore "invented the Internet" claim that was used to make him look grandstanding and stupid... despite the fact that he never actually said that, and Vint Cerf credits Gore for his efforts.

Dude, at 1:30, he specifically says "We didn't invent the tablet market, we invented the modern tablet." That's a direct, out of his mouth, complete quote.

He's trying to say that somehow his devices are totally different than what came before, @ 3:25 "I think that they really are two different products" It's also interesting that at no point does he refer to what came before as Microsoft tablets. He says that they're clamshell type thing, they're "another PC," what a tablet was 10 years ago (like the segment doesn't exist anymore), this flipbook thing, look at it as a notebook, it's not a "kickass product."

He's doing everything he possibly can to claim that what came before wasn't a real tablet and what Apple invented is the "modern" tablet.

Even when given a direct quote & source link, you chose to simply ignore what was said. Tim Cook said: "We invented the modern tablet." There's no if, ands or buts about it. Suck it up, you're wrong.

Fano: McDonalds invented the hamburger or that Ford invented the automobile

I always thought of it like the light bulb.  "Lots of people," when asked who invented it, will say, "Thomas Edison!"  not because it's true, but because his name is the one tied to it for various reasons (another discussion).  Likewise with Apple and the iThings.  They didn't invent it, and most of us aware of the business/situation know it.  But there's a significant portion of society out there that didn't know there were portable mp3 players pre-iPod, but Apple came out with the iPod and that's when the portable digital player market got huge, so to those people, Apple did invent it.

Seems more of a testament to the tremendous success of Apple's marketing than it is a testament to people making intentionally false, disingenuous claims that Apple did it first.

Sure, you can strip out all of the context, rework the preceding and following sentences (or hell, just remove them) and make him say anything, but that doesn't mean that he claimed Apple invented tablets.

Actually, I was given a paraphrased quote.  I found the source and linked to it, and you've chosen to ignore every sentence in it except for the one that kinda, sorta, partially, almost claims what you say.

Why would that video be the only time he ever said anything about the iPod? My quote is a press release and they rarely have video of the person saying what is attributed to them.

If you are claiming that an official Steve Jobs direct quote on Apple's own website, in their official archive of public statements, is false because there is no video of him speaking those words then you really are clutching at straws. Do you deny JK Rowling wrote Harry Potter because there is no video of her doing so?

entropic_existence: Theaetetus: Unsurprisingly and consistent with every single other attempt shown in this thread, Steve Jobs never actually said that. Relevant part starts at 3:07. He calls it "the coolest thing", not a brand new invention.

Also, if you check the first three minutes, he's talking about all the other digital music players that existed. It'd be a bit silly to have a three minute presentation of competitor's music players and then claim your new product is the first music player, no?

Watching the keynote it feels like an early version of what Apple's marketing machine evolved in to. Sort of like every company that advertises a new product, ever. Why are the rules different for this one company?

I didn't say they are. I think Apple has a very slick marketing strategy, it certainly works. I find it obnoxious, but I find most advertising obnoxious in that regard. And I enjoy and use many Apple products as well as many non-Android products.

I'm just pointing out that the "Apple claims they invented X" stuff is all about perception, and their marketing strategy definitely feeds in to that perception.

Your "quote" is from a press release talking about the keynote that morning. And from the video of the keynote that morning, the "quote" is incorrect. Your "quote" doesn't show that Jobs actually claimed they invented music players - it shows that some idiot marketing guy paraphrased and got it wrong.

And really, the press release is an official record that trumps a live recording of a keynote? Gosh, we can watch the video and our eyes and ears say that Jobs said X, but a press release said he said Y, so our eyes and ears must be wrong? And you claim  I am clutching at straws?
