Irregardless of the irony, I literaly went crazy when I saw on the first month anniversary of the hurricanes decimation of over 20 homes. I should have perused this in the paper vice the television.

No.  No, I have not.  I have perused many works of literary achievement during my life on this planet.  This article is not one of them.

2013-11-19 08:27:28 AM
That was an epic list.

2013-11-19 08:28:48 AM
They could of said the same thing with less words.

The list is compromised of win.

2013-11-19 09:00:13 AM
For all intensive purposes, this list is awesome.

I found the list informative and cromulent.

I am fairly certain I have seen this list before...by a different author. But no way a shiatty list writer would ever plagiarize another.

Wow, you're so random!

Sometimes the meaning of words change.  So these words literally mean what the user thinks the mean they just don't mean what they use to mean. Ironic

Honestly, though, lists like this are really just designed to make Grammar Nazi's feel well about themselves. In all truthfulness, the "correct" meaning of individual words, per se, is a mute point. All that matters in spoken language is weather or not your meaning is clear. As long as people understand you, than you've communicated correctly.

"Something is ironic when it is the opposite of what's expected, often in a way that causes wry amusement."

Ironically they got this one wrong.

The "would of"/"should of" is just plain illiterate idiocy. Some of the others seem like natural evolutions of language.

2013-11-19 09:04:10 AM
Who uses "random" as a noun?

2013-11-19 09:04:30 AM
I'm supposably using the wrong words?  Unpossible.

A word means whatever the majority of people think it means, pedants.

And a big help in making sure your meaning is understood is by choosing the proper words. Just because an idiot is too lazy to know they're wrong, doesn't mean the person hearing/reading what they say is. Words mean things. They're used to convey ideas. And the more accurate the wording, the more accurately the idea will be conveyed. Unless you're ok with people guessing what you mean, one should put more effort into making certain their intentions aren't left up to vague interpretation.

\Incorrect use of decimate annoys me
\\Glad the list included it

Cracked did it better many years ago. That's right, this is worse than Cracked.

2013-11-19 09:08:27 AM
pffft. that list was neither perfectly cromulent nor purple monkey dishwasher.

2013-11-19 09:08:55 AM
No mention of massive?  Everything on the news is "massive."
eg, a massive sinkhole.  How much does a sinkhole weigh?

2013-11-19 09:09:08 AM
Yes, words and language evolve, but that doesn't mean every instance of misused words is simply the natural evolution of language.  Most evolutionary changes fail.

The meanings of words can change when there is a reason for the meaning to change. Stupid people being too lazy to find out and use the right meaning is not a valid reason for changing the meaning.

But what if the storm killed 10% of the villagers?  That would of been correct irregardless.

still cool with shiatty grammar though right?

Shouldn't that have been "irregardless" subby?  :)

/ Interestingly irregardless was not flagged by spell check

2013-11-19 09:14:10 AM
Ironically their discussion of "peruse" misuses "scan" in exactly the same way, at least if you insist on older definitions of words as the one true meaning. They would have known this if they'd read their Encyclopedia Brown.

I didn't know about "over" or "decimate". Glad to find out. Now if people would stop using the incorrect phrase, "I could care less".

My outrage was growing as I read that and I was ready to display my umbrage but then I seen it was Pocket Ninja and I lol'd.

11: "Penultimate". It does not mean "Better than ultimate". It means second-last.

I've been saying this for years (without all the sarcasm).  It's especially helpful in pointing out how often the durbnpoisn.comli.com tag is used incorrectly.
