2 questions:

were there 2 different opening songs to that movie? i may be confusing it with the mall scene in 'weird science' though. i swear i've heard a couple of different ones through various viewings.

why is it emilio estevez instead of sheen?

also: molly ringwald did an awesome ama on reddit...but no one asked her if that was really her crotch shot.

Sheen is the screen name Martin took, Charlie rode the coat tails, Emilio stuck with the name on his birth certificate

buntz: It's a great message that movie sends, change who you are and how you look so the popular boy will like you.

That's my biggest issue with the movie.  Ally was freaking hot, no need to change how she looked.  She was my dream girl for the longest time.

T-Servo: Alabama ain't the midwest, boy.

/grew up in Wisconsin
//demographics matched the movie for the 80s

Ding, ding, ding.

stupiddream: Everyone always raved about Molly but I always thought Ally was the hotter one.

I'm in complete agreement.  Ally was always hotter to me.  Molly Ringwald, was pretty "eh.." (even though the fluent French ability is hot in itself)

FrancoFile: frepnog: Mike Chewbacca: Brian brought a flair gun to school to kill himself

BUT HE DIDN'T DO IT, DID HE?  NO.  i DON'T THINK SO.

He only had one piece of flair.  What would you call someone who just does the minimum?

I love Fark!

Thanks for the laugh, guys!

Molly Ringwald still looks great.

Mole Man: Molly Ringwald still looks great.

Ally Sheedy looks great for someone who you could project a movie off of her forehead.

Mike Chewbacca: DMZ DEATH: I read a quote recently that was so true. If that movie took place today, the kids would have their noses stuck in their Iphones and never would have talked to each other.

Eh, the movie was never realistic anyway. I like the movie, but I never thought for one second a real Saturday school detention would play out that way.

Yep.  I went to high school well before the iPod/smartphone era, and was in Saturday detention quite often.  No one talked to each other.

I thought it was common knowledge that it wasn't?

No one was talking to each other in the film until Bender, being an asshole, started antagonizing Molly's character.

I totally went to school with a Bender.  He would only take quiet for so long until he just HAD to astart talking to someone, either to antagonize them or just to shoot the shiat, and before long everyone was talking to everyone.

/never had detention, so to speak, but free period in the band room might as well been.

Same here, until I saw that movie with her and A Martinez that was one of those 9 1/2 Weeks kinda movies.  Unfortunately she refused to get 'em out for this one, but not so for Martinez.

The wife was perfectly happy to see him prancing around with his junk showin'....but for some reason I haven't been interested in seeing any more Ally Sheedy films since that one.

OtherLittleGuy: TigerzDad: interestingly, the kids' offenses in the movie would result in arrests, expulsion, and maybe even jail now.

Get off my lawn!

Especially Ally Sheedy's character's offense.

I haven't seen the movie since the 80's, I had to look that up.

... Well played.

FTA: To avoid being typecast, Hall turned down roles written for him by Hughes in Ferris Bueller's Day Off (Cameron Frye) and Pretty In Pink ("Duckie" Dale), before being offered the starring role in Full Metal Jacket, but he missed out due to contract issues.

Wow, he might be one of the dumbest actors in terms of managing their career that I've seen. He could have had two big movies under his belt as a supporting player and then played the lead in a Stanley Kubrick movie.

Wow.

I liked the movie well enough, but as a huge Simple Minds fan at the time, didn't like how popular *that* song became. It basically ruined their career here in America.

We weren't allowed to talk in detention, and we were never left unattended. Kids who had Saturday school were allowed to spend the entire day doing homework and studying (not reading fiction for fun, which I would have called a normal Saturday) or picking up trash on the school grounds. Chitchatting was never gonna happen.
