In his spare time he scours streets and parks in his district, looking for shopping carts homeless use to store and move their belongings. He returns good ones to stores and destroys others with his sledgehammer.
"I find abandoned junk, specifically shopping carts, and I remove them. I also create a situation where those carts can't be pushed around the city. I think it's a good thing," he said.

Dafuq is wrong with Hawaii?

I hate bums as much as the next guy but it's not the real ones with the "no place to live" and the "shopping cart". No, my hobo-hate is reserved for the scam artists who move amongst the real homeless and are "desperate" for you to give them money.

The ones with the shopping carts are probably not using them as an elaborate prop to support their fake hobo lifestyle.

I honestly want to see this man never able to take a cart from the grocery store to his car ever again without fear of being rushed, having the cart ripped away and sledgehammered, and having to explain to the grocery store that "it just keeps happening".

"I suck at my job and cannot work towards solutions and compromise, so I guess smashing things will paper over that fact."

Brower said he has yet to take a cart from a homeless person who's pushing it, but that may be coming

A rusty screwdriver to your gut may be coming too, champ.

This guy has no idea how the carts were acquired. Seriously leave them and their stuff alone you tw@t.

2013-11-19 08:03:18 AM
I'm actually a little relieved. The headline gave me images of the guy dressing up like Kathy Bates and going all "Misery" on those hoboes who keep giving him those confusing erections.

Came to say this too, at a minimum felony mischief.  The stores, who remains the property owner of those carts regardless of condition, should be prosecuting.

I seem to remember other politicians throughout history who made targeting specific groups of people a central part of their campaign. They all seemed to follow the same trajectory towards jack booted authoritarianism.

Let's hope no one in his state goes around looking for politicians; bringing the good ones back to the legislature and ruining others with their sledgehammers.

I don't understand how he thinks that will help. Does he think someone will return to the area and think "Oh shiat, my shopping cart's gone. Guess it's time to get an apartment"?

Well sure, if he can just make being homeless in Hawaii a little more inconvenient, obviously they'll swim to the mainland.

His message to the public is that it's okay to commit acts of violence against homeless people, against vulnerable people. It's okay for vigilante justice," Marya Grambs said.

There are valid criticisms of this plan, but that's not one of them.

So you'd be perfectly fine with a state legislator taking a sledgehammer to your car?

Lost Thought 00: So you'd be perfectly fine with a state legislator taking a sledgehammer to your car?

If you really want to compare apples to apples, let's not call it "my" car, for starters, since these carts are stolen.  Then there's the matter of equating destruction of said stolen property to a violent attack upon my person.  The entire argument is specious at best.

2013-11-19 09:16:17 AM
Because, of course, destroying shopping carts will end the problem of homelessness.

/Dumbass

2013-11-19 09:22:09 AM
He returns good ones to stores and destroys others with his sledgehammer.

I think this is the definition of vandalism and malicious destruction of property.  The owner of abandoned or stolen property should have a chance to claim it.  If your car is stolen and damage this doesn't give a private citizen -who happens to hold an elected office- the right to dispose of it as he wishes.

That was the thought that crossed my mind the instant after I pressed "Add Comment."  Now I don't know the ecology of the homeless, but are you 100% certain that all these carts are stolen?  Additionally, I don't believe that for an act of violence to be committed against you, it necessarily has to be an attack on your person.  I would consider someone bashing in my car with a sledgehammer just to spite me an act of violence.

What we have here is a man who desperately doesn't need to be in office, anymore. Political affiliation is a Dem, I'd say the Dems need to throw this one under the bus.

Ok, so your car was stolen. Upon finding it, a state legislator decides "eh, prolly totaled" and smashes it up for you.

It's not his to smash.

2013-11-19 09:41:49 AM
no snark (this time)
the usual rules for stolen property (as i understand it) is that the owner have the chance to recover it.
simply because i find stolen property in the hands of someone else (thief or finder) gives no right to destroy it or dispose of it.

that being said

now speaking as a cold hearted bast***d

either
a) leave those people alone to do the best they can and write the cost off as one of the many costs of doing business in the us
b) find out why these people are homeless and try to fix that problem
c) kill them (allowing the possibility of leaving them at least the dignity of being human and not the pests and vermin that some of our politicians are attempting)

Like I said there are plenty of things wrong with this plan, but it isn't the same thing as assaulting homeless people.

When I clicked the link and glanced at the photo, I was thinking "why is this asinine", because at first glance it looked like he might have used his hammer to help someone. He could have chosen to do so and his PR would be completely different right now.

I'm still trying to figure out how an elected official thinks it's entirely legal to damage and destroy private property, especially stolen private property...
