Man, that discussion is amusing.

"It's turning left!"
"No, it's a right turn."
"Physics are still physics, it's a left turn."
"Boats dip into the turn."
"That's no boat, it's a ship!"

BOOOOOOORRIIIIIIINNG.

Ships might have been cool in the 1800s when 25 miles per hour was a fast pace, but in 2013 going on 14, it's not so impressive. Hovercraft could do much better stunts if we put them to it, but we don't have to because planes were invented.

Who cares? We got the oil free from Iraq! Quick turnaround too, only took 5 years.

Considering that they had probably just finished topping off (UNREP), I think they can spare a bit.

Breakaways are a blast, but the most fun are full power demos. The point is to test that the ship works as designed. Pedal to the medal, then hard rudder, shift rudder a couple times, then all back full. The ship shakes something crazy, water comes up onto the flight deck, and it's a lot of fun.

The video is 2 minutes 30 seconds long. You know how long it takes me to pull a 360 degree turn in my BRZ?

5 seconds given an open parking lot. 2 seconds in a packed parking lot.

2:30 is not a high speed turn. It's what my grandma does when she's trying to back out of the Pic N Save parking lot.

Considering that the destroyer is about 6-7,000 times the size of your BRZ, I'd say it's still pretty good.

I object to the term "high speed turn". I've seen a Carribean Cruise Line ship pull a 180 in port in less than a minute. So what the fark is with this military fellating? Trust me, Phil, they get their dicks sucked enough when they pull into port in the Philippines. No need for you and subby to dive in headfirst, mouth open.

Back in the day when a 'destroyer' displaced about 3500 tons, that would be called 'having a bone in her teeth'.

/not sure it applies to a ship as big as a WWII CA

I'd have to check with an engineer, but I'm pretty sure ships can have a tight turn radius without preventing people from going to planned parenthood.

The turn took at lot less than the 2 1/2 minutes of the video. They were pretty much turned around a minute. Not bad for 30 knots for a vessel that is 500ft long.

My late father was on a destroyer (USS Prichett) during WWII, and he said the same thing.  He told stories about how the captain of his ship was pretty good at dodging kamikaze planes.

Even worse - almost 40 degree down angle (thanks to a loss of hydraulics/jam dive issue).  SSMGs don't hack that very well.

/No pics, though
//Those who weren't actively trying to fix it were too busy waiting to see what happened when/if we exceeded test depth
