Because it's a word created by and for attention whores. Not that hard to see why people may have issues with it.

Idiocracy, here we come!

There's only one person responsible for this detestable development.

Difficulty: It's NOT a Kardashian, Hilton, Minaj, Fenty or Cyrus.

Honestly, I suspect that the only issue with this are the snobby "muh language purity" types that snub their nose at silly new words such as this that are used created by younger folks.

"Selfie" has spawned a raft of spinoffs, including "helfie" for a picture taken of someone's own hair, "belfie" for taking a picture of your own posterior and "drelfie" for a self portrait while in a drunken state.

Then there's the "hellfie" which you take right before Satan drags your sorry ass into a pit of fire for using those terms.

It used to be called a "self portrait". Remember? We had words for this already.

Making the word "official" gives stupidity legitimacy. We failed at stopping the next generation from being narcissistic a-holes, so obviously the right thing to do it put it in a dictionary.

Languages evolve. Always have, always will. And the evolution is usually driven by younger folks. There's a reason we're not speaking Anglo-Saxon right now.
Seriously, this is something probably EVERY generation ever has complained about. Really though, you can do nothing about the fluidity of language. Other than biatch on the internet, I suppose.

I don't have a problem with slang. I have a problem with taking specific definitions of a word with many meanings in many communities then throwing it in a book that most people would call authoritative. This wasn't done with "normal" words, so why does slang get a free pass? If anything, this shows the lack of thoroughness on Oxford's part.

Ah, gotcha. I understand, but I would say that the "word of the year" thing was created solely to get OED some press so they gotta pick a stupid word like this. I dunno.

9/10 of the words in the OED started as slang.  The English language did not drop out of the sky as a fait accompli.  The OED has always prided itself on representing the English language as it is, not as it is thought it ought to be by people with a stick up their ass.  Does "selfie" have a reasonably understood meaning by a reasonably large segment of the population?  Yes.  Then it is as valid for the OED as "cow" is.  If you find this beyond the pale, might I suggest you start your own dictionary?  You can call it "The 30 Words I Use"  And if you just can't handle English's varied beauty and adaptability, might I suggest French or Italian - they actually allow pedantic blowhards to hold their languages hostage for meaningless paeans to "purity"..

The word of the year refers to taking photos of one's self.

That...maybe doesn't say great things about where we're at as a culture, right now.

You are so right sneakernets! This generation is so stupid and narcissistic! What have they even contributed to society besides selfies and obamacare? I hear the millennials are so narcissistic they spend a good portion of their time insulting the values of previous generations in comment threads across the internet, wallowing in their sense of smugly ignorant superiority.

If only the idiots that ran the Oxford English Dictionary were as insightful and intelligent as you! Surely you would stem the tide of narcissism and cultural vandalism that grips today's youth! But no, upon seeing the word "selfie" in the dictionary, the youth will surely spiral into an orgiastic fit of squalor and false-validation, totally destroying the fine morals and intellectual prowess our country is so well known for. I've heard they might even vote for a woman in the next presidential election. Oh, how our great nation has fallen!

You can pork ones that are just as good or better looking than that without paying for them (like me) or you can just go to xnxx.com and see them completely naked and they are better looking then her.

What exactly do people have a problem with about this? Is it the word itself they don't like or is it the act of taking ones own picture that pisses them off?

I'm not really sure either.  I am none too happy with the word itself, or the duck-face that comes along with it.  But the extra potential for large tracts of land more than makes up for either...
