Many people snatched them up like mad, with one city resident who had just caught one saying: "This is an dove/pigeon that is used for dishes, it can be eaten." Very quickly, only a few out of 100 doves were left.

This is what it sounds like, when doves cry fry.

In the comments are a bunch of people saying outside China cities are filled with pigeons and parks have ducks and swans, as if this is quite surprising. What, is any bird fair game in China? Did they really solve the city pigeon problem by turning them into spicy pigeon balls?

You know what squab is? It's pigeons. It's just that in the US, for some reason, they're vermin. Everywhere else, it's food.

The headline makes it sound like they were grabbing the birds during the wedding, but according to TFA, it was after everyone left and the dumbass "freed" pigeons decided to just stay where they were.

so...meh. I hope they tasted good.

Sad.  Two more people throwing away their lives.  Marriage is for the birds.

Quail, or Small birds in looing sauce:

Bring to a boil
1 cup soy sauce
star anise
a few slices of ginger
Lemon and orange cut in half with juices.
A cup of sherry.
3 cups of water
1/4 cup of sugar
Add more water and more soy sauce to cover the birds.

Bring to a boil and place in the birds with string under their wings. Cover the pot and turn it off after it returns to a boil and walk away for 30 mins.

Remove the birds and hang them up on the strings with a drip tray. Let the birds dry out so the skin is dry to the touch.
Then fry them in Hot Oil for 30 seconds so the skin crisps up and they're reheated.

/you can use cornish game hens but let those sit the hot liquid for 1 hour.

FTFC...

As someone from Hefei, I feel helpless... However, doves indeed can't survive the winter. In other words, they were doomed to die! Because they are not wild, they lack the ability to survive [in the wild]. But seeing people catch them, I want to say [to them]: can I someday catch you and cook you as well?!! All life is equal...

Heh. China has a version of PETA?

If a flying creature can't escape people on foot, that sounds like it's on Darwin'shiat list anyway.

I mean, local cats could have eaten them.

Oh, wait...

Cute, Fark filters. That was "hit list", and the "s" was with a separate word, but I suppose "shiat list" is accurate too.

The Chinese people have had something we haven't had in quite a long time, large prolonged famine.  When you live with a precarious food supply, or have that in your recent history then you grow up with the attitude "fark it, it's meat".

Americans and a lot of Western countries haven't had to face that sort of problem in a long long time, so we've grown to consider certain animals not worth eating.  Trust me, if mass starvation struck America you'd see a lot less cats, dogs, pigeons and rats around.

Where I work we have a resident roadrunner. Nobody bothers it so it's gotten used to people not being a threat. I got within 2 feet of it yesterday. Very pretty bird.

A few years ago the NYPD investigated a guy that was snatching up pigeons from a Chinatown park, apparently it's not illegal since they are considered vermin. I've also seen people illegally gathering small turtles and little fish from a city lake. There can't  be much meat on the little sea creatures, maybe it's some collective memory of the Great Leap Forward.

I just saw Andrew Zimmern on TV with some freak, downing city pigeons with rocks for a tasty snack.  Classified as vermin, so technically legal for poaching, broiling or frying.

If only they would enact some kind of policy to help control their population, I'm sure that'd fix the problem.

Pigeons and doves actually taste pretty good. Chances are if you have a halal poultry farm near you (there are quite a lot in New York, I imagine in other diverse cities too) they will be happy to kill and pluck one of their fresh pigeons and sell you the meat. They usually have chicken too, and sometimes turkey and rabbits. Not something to have every day, but not bad tasting at all.
