Yeah, sounds outrageous until you actually read what happened.  Just take your farking ticket.  Seriously, speeding tickets in NM aren't even that expensive.  Don't put your own life and the lives of your children in danger by running from the cops.

That stupid biatch just turned a $100 (or so) fine into several felonies while risking her kids lives.

I agree with you except for the shooting part. At no point was that warranted and that's what's causing everyone to outrage at the department. The mom is definitely at fault for escalating everything, but shooting at a minivan when it's leaving? C'mon.

As with many Fark stories, there is no one here who is not a total asshole. Except the kids who stayed in the car, and did not ask to be shot at.

There are certain areas of this country where if I was pulled over and someone mentioned calling for the dog, I would drop my pants right then and there and shiat on the officer's shoes. I figure they'd appreciate me being proactive like that.

I dunno.  Call me crazy, I just think cops should be able to deal with nonviolent offenders in some way other than trying to shoot them to death.

Yeah, I must admit deadly force was not warranted.

I got a ticket in NM once.  I still wish I had had the nerve to say that I thought 75 was the minimum speed limit.  It was nothing but straight 2-lane highway as far as the eye could see.  The cop didn't even seem human.  He wasn't an asshole, but he wasn't nice either.  It was about $100 for 15 over the limit.

Supposedly there was a time when PD interviews concentrated on would you be willing to use your gun if you had to. Seems like anymore it must be are you willing to use your gun in any and every situation. If not, FD is across the hall

The vid I saw earlier made the mother look completely unreasonable and somewhat irrational. I mean, who takes off from a traffic stop? What the hell did she think would come of that? Then she tries to run from the cop and her son assaults him? Bad freaking juju.

Then there's a big jump, she's speeding off and Officer Backup is firing on a van full of screaming kids. I can't imagine a valid explanation of how a fleeing suspect would justify deadly force in this situation.

2013-11-18 08:41:44 PM
I can only assume the shooting officer had only just arrived and didn't know kids were in the vehicle. If he did know kids were in the vehicle, there's Hell to pay.

factoryconnection: who takes off from a traffic stop?

She could be the craziest coont to ever flap her lips in defiance of authority and a horrible person to the core. That's irrelevant.

What is relevant is that the police escalated a mere pointless traffic stop avoidance that can be handled later in to a shooting in a public place.

Unacceptable.

She wasn't shot at for a traffic ticket. Backup was called after she'd run from the stop, resisted arrest, her son assaulted the officer, then they barricaded themselves in the car.

Then something transpired and a backup responder fired on her vehicle for some reason.

I know there's a parental instinct to protect your kids, and black folks have gotten the short end of the baton from police since forever. But avoid f*cking with the police and your kids will be far safer than anything she was doing leaves them.

I drove through NM once on my way to Colorado for spring break with some friends. Every single person that we talked to said you do NOT speed through NM. Even if it seems like you're the only soul on the road, do not speed. We saw signs saying they monitored the highways by helicopter and all that shiat.

Needless to say, we did not speed through NM.

All those other charges SHOULDN'T EVEN HAVE HAPPENED, except maybe evasion.

You see, a poor hunter chases prey. A good hunter waits.

There's a plethora of reasons high speed chases have been banned. What with CCTV cameras, radio, helicopters, and all the other tech available cops shouldn't even bother breaking the speed limit unless the suspects have drawn weapons. Someone runs? Let 'em. This ain't grand theft auto. Pursuit doesn't stop after 2 minutes with no contact. Chasing down and getting in a fight with someone stupid? That's on the cops.

I don't have to be patient, even though I get paid by the hour. After all, I have a pistol, a shotgun, a baton, a taser, chemical irritants,  and my fists before I ever have to pull out patience.

Looking at the video it looks like the cop is trying to shoot the tires out (I could be wrong), if he was trying to shoot the driver I would expect bullet holes in the rear window.

To me it look like the cop that shot at them had just arrived.  He may not have known about the children.  A little irrational I think.  But what that woman and her son did was beyond stupid.

With all the raping going on, by the police, in New Mexico and Texas Mexico, she knew that being Black and having some weed(?) she was gonna get road-side raped.

I didn't watch this video, but the video I saw the other day had the mother driving away from the police twice and her son attacking a police officer. Also it doesn't appear that the officer was shooting into the car but rather at the wheels. While not safe, I don't know if trying to disable the van is any less safe than letting it continue with for the kids.

I don't think it was the right decision, but I don't think it was wrong either. Who knows whats going on where this woman is running and the son is attacking the police.

Maybe the kids were constantly yelling "Are we there yet?!" resulting in the mom driving faster to get where they were all going quicker.

Those kids are gonna have a guilty conscience.

You see, ten years ago they would have just let her leave. Then written down the license plate number and issued an arrest warrant or court summons or what have you.

But in the America of today they just try to gun you down like a dog.

Oh, yeah. Greatest Country in The World, for sure. We're totally not descending into Police State territory guys!

There's absolutely no justification for the police shooting at a van full of children that is traveling away from them. None. Not even the fact that she didn't stop like she was supposed to.

2013-11-18 09:43:22 PM
Shooting at someone over a speeding ticket is a dickish move, but the lady shouldn't have tried to get away.

Don't cops have rules about not doing high speed chases over small stuff like speeding tickets?  The cop already had her license plate number so it's not like she was going to avoid a ticket.

Watching the video, the shooting officer didn't know there were kids in the van, and probably heard - but did not see - the other officer breaking the glass with his nightstick, which probably sounded like gunfire in the heat of the situation.

The only sad thing about this story is that the stupid biatch and her spawn are unharmed. If the bullet had gone through the back of her head and caused the minivan to careen off a cliff, we'd be better off as a species for it.

If any of her kids were injured as a result of her idiocy, I hope she'd be the one charged.

I am sure members of the family will be facing charges.

Where the the cops criminal charges for attempted murder and child endangerment, ect.

2013-11-18 09:48:09 PM
The mom was definitely being stupid, but the shooting was completely unwarranted, even if there were no kids in the car. Since when do the police shoot someone who's not an immanent threat to them or other innocent people?

This is as stupid as those cops who chase people through residential neighborhoods going 80+ mph. There is absolutely nothing worth putting innocent people at risk like that. It's high time we start holding these police officers accountable for this kind of shiat, and by accountable I mean loss of job or jail time.
