It's like Dear Prudence for hipsters.

Meaning it's fake and douchey!

If you are running out of money between paychecks, maybe you shouldn't be ordering extra shot grande white chocolate double whip drinks regularly.

How could the person ahead of him/her have already paid the correct amount if the order has not been placed yet?  If they decided to go for the most expensive thing on the menu would the benefactor have to come back to cover the difference or do they have a running tab?  Yeah, I am calling BS on this one too.

2013-11-18 06:44:59 PM

How could the barista tell you beforehand that your drink has already been paid for, without knowing what the fark you're going to order? I'm not sure that many Starbucks let people open a tab.

Nice work of fiction, Pat. I'm happy for your having found a place of employment that pays you for "work" like that.

2013-11-18 06:46:24 PM
It's a trade-off. If they tell you in advance that they are buying, you can order whatever the hell you want, and they are obligated to pay. BUT...they get to give you a swift kick to the balls (or a tit-punch). OR...you get the drink paid for, with no advance notice, but you remain coont-punt free. Your choice.

Next up: the martini that I was sent by the creep at the bar wasn't dirty, and it lacked the THREE olives that I require for every glass, and it certainly wasn't the gin that I normally imbib; the question is: can I legally tear their heart from their sternum for this, or should I blame the bartender for not reading my mind?

If she were more invested in the long con, she could have parlayed that free small drip from a stranger into a whirlwind romance with a wealthy sugar daddy, able to afford anything on the menu at Starbucks. That's crazy money. The place has bucks in its name. She could have taken her obviously wealthy anonymous benefactor home, blown him, and gotten his name, then had him pay for her lifestyle until age hit her with the ugly stick. Instead she got biatched out by an advice columnist. Of course that's exactly what we should expect out of the kind of broke ass, whiny person that has to steal $1.93 in change from a blind bum on the street in order to afford her small drip with room. Millennial generation, I weep for thee.

You don't tell people you're picking up the tab before they order, or as people are generally greedy bastards, they will order appetizers, desserts, coffees, apartifs, etc. that they would never order if they were paying on their own. Or decide tonight is the perfect night for the waygu filet mignon for two for one.

You got a free coffee (although I also smell bullshiat).

Try to enjoy it.

Biatching about obnoxious coffee orders at Starbucks? Truly, it's the cutting edge of humor. I wonder what the author thinks about airline food?

/Doesn't drink coffee, obnoxious or otherwise.

2013-11-18 06:54:56 PM
Two things, if you are almost broke two days before payday, you do not go to Starbucks. And secondly, stop being such a biatch and be grateful.

I sometimes would do this if the guy behind me is uniform or something like that, but if guys reacts like this, I'd have to think twice next time.

/I know ungrateful biatches like this is extremely rare, still

Less so when you consider the likelihood that author of TFA made it up to serve as a set-up for the line "that is the most obnoxious coffee order I have ever heard."

You poor dear.  Why don't you go watch the servants buff the 2nd-best Cadillac with their hair?  That always makes you feel better.

I used to work at Dunkin Donuts, and usually when this happened it was in the drive thru, where we already had the next person's order priced, so the person at the window would know how much when they asked to pay.

The only reason that people become greedy like this is because the people who came before them taught them to be greedy - they're conditioned by a society that rewards such savagely self-serving behavior. It's your society too, so stop being so self-righteous about it.

You two have covered everything I wanted to say.

I never really understood going to Starbuck's anyway.  I have a decent coffee making machine in my kitchen.  It takes less than a minute to set it up to make coffee.  It has a timer on it so all I have to do is walk to my kitchen and pour hot coffee when I wake up.  Even when I just had my old Mr. Coffee I would just turn it on and wait a few minutes and then pour a cup.

In either case, I didn't even have to leave the house to do that.  Why the hell does anyone want to go stand in line or sit in a drive-thru lane at farking Starbuck's just to have an overpriced cup of coffee?

I've never actually figured out how much it costs me to brew a whole farking pot of coffee at home because it's so cheap, but I bet the whole pot of coffee I make costs less than a single cup at Starfarks.

2013-11-18 07:00:53 PM
I always offer people to buy for them after they make their selection.

1) If they are a good person and would get something cheaper because you are buying it for them they don't.
2) If they are an ass and would buy something more expensive because you are buying it they can't

When people offer to buy me a drink I usually try to get what they are having so I am not buying anything more expensive than the person would for himself.

2013-11-18 07:01:56 PM
I'll go one-up on the whole thing. I think Advice Guy is being paid by Starbuck's ad people to perpetuate their 'pay it forward' social media campaign.
