The local radio NPR station I listen to (for southern New Mexico) announces all businesses opening up that particular week each Monday morning right about the time the alarm clock goes off.
I lie in bed and have to listen.  It's so lame but I can't help it.
About a month ago they noted that a Corner Bakery Cafe was opening, he added that he had never heard of the chain.  There's like a thousand of them in the country?!? WTF???

When I lived on a small Caribbean island several years ago and they renovated the airport, all the North American expats lined up for the new Quizno's in the food court.

Well, they even have one next to the Best Buy outside (UNDISCLOSED)

Why do all these local news sites expect you to know which state their particular <insertcityhere> is located in?

It's just like any other national fast food place opening in a new region. When In N' Out opened in Dallas it was a major news story throughout Texas and the lines were ridiculous.

Wake me up when they open a Runza nearby.

George Babbitt: Why do all these local news sites expect you to know which state their particular <insertcityhere> is located in?

Because 99% of the people reading that paper live there or are from there?  Why would you read a local newspaper and not know anything about the region?

/Who doesn't know where Altoona is?
//Even if you didn't, that "Pennsylvania News" link on the right is a big giveaway...

Do Cinnabons exist outside of malls? I don't think I've ever seen one.

To be fair, things like this are "news" in just about any smaller but densely populated city.  People in "Top 10" (or even 20) market cities probably laugh at things like this being news, but, even in a much larger city like where I am (Fort Wayne, IN, which is 280,000) things like a Marshall's opening up at the mall are nightly news, since just about anything like that is "news" to most of the audience... vs. a city like NY or Chicago or Philadelphia, where some local whatever store opening up is likely only really valuable "news" for about 5% of its audience, outside of something notable like the huge 2-floor Walgreens that opened up in Chicago a year or two ago.

Sadly, I was once at a place in my life when I'd drive to Altoona or Johnstown because they had a wider variety of restaurants than where I lived.

Also, this is what qualifies as news in the town I lived in when going to Altoona was a big deal:

Owner relentless in quest for missing dog
