A politician did something good? There must be a catch.

Ah, Fark -- cynicism even before reason.  Don't change; you're like the crazy aunt that's actually kinda cool sometimes.

Who gives a fark if it's real or staged.  No one was hurt and maybe even a life was saved.  The least relevant part of the headline is "candidate for governor".  The guy may have compassion but a knowledge of first aid has little to do with civil service.  What, are we just going to elect every EMT out there?  A lot of veterinarians have saved the lives of puppies and kittens; would they make great politicians too?

Also, the Chargers are 4-6, and don't exactly have a legacy for winning, so by their standards that's not bad.

Donnelly, who is wearing a cowboy hat, says, "I'm sorry if I did it too hard," and he goes on to empathize with the woman.

"My wife is always telling me to cut it into really tiny pieces," he says, "and I never listen."

Actually, the last governor of Georgia was a veterinarian.  He was also kind of an asshole.

Judging by the size of the woman, he never got even close to her ribs. (Or her yummy, yummy cake).

I've had to do the Heimlich before. Twice. Once on a 7 year old with a gummy worm, and once on an adult with an underchewed piece of meat.

It's way harder than you think. You have to really almost try to hurt the person to get that stuff out, depending on what is stuck where. But you can live with broken ribs.

I will never forget that little girl though. Mom was trying, but just couldn't put enough into it. It was almost violent before that bastard came out. But it did, the kid got bruised and scared as hell, but lived to tell the tale. Learn this stuff. It really can save someone.

I performed it on my daughter when she was around three. One thrust was all it took. Must have been the adrenaline kicking in.

Um. . . perhaps next time consider some alternatives in your vocabulary.

Really?  Didn't know that.  I haven't followed the guy much since there's approximately a 0% chance of me voting for a Republican.

it was probably a family relative.   a politician wouldn't have any other reason to do it.  maybe it was a high dollar campaign donor.

Winning the "heroics" tag here on Fark is not all different being a limbo master....

Sadly, being a hero will get you nowhere in elections.  Just ask Mayor Barrett.

There's actually a different first step they have you do now, where you bend the person over your knee so they're facing downwards (gravity!) and then you pound on their back. Apparently it works a lot of the time, and doesn't cause as much secondary damage as the Heimlich maneuver (which is now literally the last ditch effort).

In fairness, he's a west coast Republican, not a southeastern or midwest Jesus Republican.  I don't know what his individual stances are on each issue, but I doubt it is as extreme as we normally think.

This is good to know.  Now we just need something safer than CPR that doesn't involve their being a some expensive machine nearby.  I've snapped someone's ribs on more than one occasion doing chest compressions.  In my defense they were all really old.
