12.

You mean "12 Doctors".

/maybe 12.5, if you count Hurndall. Adding in the Valeyard would make it 13 even.

Eh, the cup 'o' regeneration in the minisode probably just provided the mechanism to say "Regenerations reset!"

If you haven't seen the "Name of the Doctor" and "Night of the Doctor" yet, do not read past here.

I'm serious, don't read past here if you haven't seen "Name of the Doctor" and "Night of the Doctor"

John Hurt may be the same Time Lord as the Doctor, but he is not the Doctor.  Hence the one who broke the promise in "Name of the Doctor" and "Doctor No More" in "Night of the Doctor."  So Eccleston is still the 9th Doctor, David Tennant the 10th Doctor, and Matt Smith the 11th Doctor.  Currently we have John Hurt as the "War Doctor" per the ending credits of "Night of the Doctor."

/If anyone complains about spoilers, I gave fair warning.

He may also be a crisis regeneration and actually be #8, or the fact that he was given the elixir of life by the sisterhood, it's not a regeneration at all.

Anyway, gonna watch Brain of Morbius, since that ep should be pretty relevant

The weird part about having a show as long lived as Doctor Who is that eventually the fans grow up, take over the show, and then fan fiction becomes the new canon.

Of course, the same thing happens to Batman, Superman, and Spider-Man, so it's not really a bad thing so long as the fan boys have talent.

Plus River gave him all her regenerations, and when he timelocked the timelords ihe got all their regenerations, plus that orange lever on the Tardis that we just noticed gives him seven more regenerations and sneezing resets the regeneration cycle entirely...

I think the explanation Smith gave in Sarah Jane Adventures is probably the most accurate.

For humans, yes, but the Doctor is a Time Lord and Doctor isn't even his real name.

Considering how his regeneration took place, he's definitely different.

/Also: Happy that Paul got one last time as The Doctor.

Do people keep bringing up The Brain of Morbius because Morby was a renegade Time Lord who had run out of his own regenerations,  or because of the scene where he and the 4th Doctor were engaged in a mind-bending contest, and images of both their past incarnations were flashing on the screen?

Very much this.  Hurt may not count as a "Doctor" but he definitely counts as a regeneration, as does the 10.5/handidoc regeneration.

I've got a buddy involved tangentially with the Christmas Special.  The idea of the regenerations already being used up will absolutely be an important point.

The latter.  And the faces we'd not seen before were clearly  meant to be the Doctor; the Doctor was clearly losing the battle at the point they showed up.

But that's been broken since Mawdryn Undead anyway.

Doesn't change the fact that (I think) it's pants on head retarded.  It feels like the whole name thing is a retcon.  Did the fact that the Doctor's real name isn't the Doctor ever come up in classic who?  So when the Master was going by the Saxon name he wasn't really the Master?  Stupid.
