Lordserb: Actually .4% is a pretty bad failure rate for manufacturing and certainly for consoles. Not that it bothers me at all since neither console interests me.

Yeah, but if damage due to poor Amazon packaging is true, it doesn't reflect the true failure rate.  It'll be interesting to see post-holiday numbers.

Korzine: soporific: This is one of the many reasons why I'm a late adopter for all new technology. Early adopters are the beta testers, and I appreciate all they do for the rest of us who don't need the newest shiny gadget on day one. They are on the front lines, fighting the customer service battles so we don't have to. Whether it is a TV, console, phone, or any other electronic device, I am so grateful that I have these early adopters around to help refine the product. That way, when I finally do get one, all the issues have been worked out, it's cheaper, faster, smaller, more durable, and much, much better than the ones they first bought. So I salute you early adopters.

/Would you like to know more?

For game consoles it usually takes at least a year for the library of games to stop sucking anyway. So it's not like you're really missing out on much if you wait either. The PS4 launch has been particularly lack luster. You have Killzone (Seems good but I'm kind of burned out on the fps genre), Knack (which is getting hammered by reviewers), and Rezogun which looks interesting, but not $400 worth of interesting.

That's going to be the issue with the Ps4, pushing up the launch date does not mean that the games will be ready. You get people who are hardcore about the console getting it now, but every last one of my friends are waiting until the games dictate which console to buy, and what's worth $460-$560 to play for that initial investment.

/BTW I think it was smart for Xbone to go the direction of HTPC, extend the appeal to households with dad's and kids that want to play games and watch movies, with mom's that want to use the kinect fitness, and the whole family can use the DVR and media aspects.

BSABSVR: AdamK: welcome to old news, most of those 1 star reviews are actually verified purchases apparently, Amazon shipped a bunch of PS4's with awful packaging and it sounds like a few hundred got damaged in the shipping process and arrived DOA

there's also the real problem of a batch of rubber used for the DS4's thumbsticks wasn't properly cured and are falling apart, and some games with in-game updates locking the console if you switch to the OS

but hey, it's a console launch, this shiat has happened with every one of them

But the gaming community is notoriously....let's be nice and say demanding when it comes to bugs.

The thing is, it has only been since the last console generation that the modern software model of ship first, debug second, and upload a patch third has even been possible.  From Pong to the PS2, console titles had to work, because they couldn't just send a new disc in the mail once they finally got the thing reasonably debugged.

Of course the way the major blockbusters get pre-sold, you know that release day is going to happen whether or not the program compiles.  I can't see the modern gamer waiting an extra day, let alone the "until its really done" the way old-school console titles had to be.

On the one hand, retailers and manufacturers do a FAR better job tracking sales than they do tracking problems, and they're more motivated to make those figures look good.  Failure reports likely only represent a fraction of actual failures, and failure reports on just one site (such as Reddit) represent only a miniscule fraction of even those.  Moreover, DOAs are only a fraction of failures for a product launch.  There will be plenty that power on but don't work right either immediately or soon.

On the other hand, when looking at after-purchase reviews on sites like Amazon, people with bad experiences are more motivated and more likely to post a review than people whose consoles work just fine.

So...yeah.  Meaningless...for both sides.

Sigh.  CSB time.

My PS4 arrived yesterday, Original plan..sell it for a profit.  Family outvoted me.  its now our official early Christmas gift...and...it didn't work.

Downloading the update failed every time.  So then I went online and found that they had a solution.  Install it via usb or disc.  YAY!

it wont recognize the CD with the update.  Well that's not good.  So then...it wont recognize the USB.  So I reformat the USB as FAT32.  Still no dice.

So then I tried a different USB....plug it in...no dice.  BUT after 15 minutes more messing with this, I realized that while the USB plugs in...it doesn't go flush because the edge of the console keep it a little out.  I pull the guts of the USB out from the USB case, and success.

What a hassle.

Have there been problems? Yes
Do the problems rise to the level of the RROD? No, not yet
Will they?  Probably not
Will people right troll reviews on Amazon just for fun?  Of course
Will the MS launch be better or worse?  Who knows but I bet the tested the fark out of the hardware to avoid a second fiasco.

Console wars aside, I'm a pretty big fan of the Dualshock 4 controller after playing with it all weekend. I don't have a PS4, but I wanted to try out the controller at least since it works natively with PC without the help of a shady 3rd party program that requires being connected to the internet(I hate you motioninjoy) and while it still takes a little tweaking with a Xinput Wrapper because of how some PC games work with controllers, it works fantastically. It brings back memories of the greatness that was the Wavebird Wireless controller for Gamecube.

It won't matter if Amazon packages the Xbox as poorly as they did the playstation. I got two of them one  was destroyed before it even got to my doorstep. The other works great.

Seriously Amazon you put no impact bubbles below the console?

The console itself should have plenty of padding inside the box, so there is no real need for Amazon to put an additional layer of padding in there. UPS just needs to get their act together in your area. Where I live, I almost never get damaged boxes because my UPS guys seem to actually have some professionalism.

Amazon's fark ups belong solely to Amazon.  They'll certainly make good on their issues.

Two things:
1) Padding in the box is irrelevant...shipping boxes should ALWAYS be packed and padded properly.
2) No, your UPS guys are not special. Your driver may be professional, but at the warehouses your sh*t is getting tossed around and beaten like everyone else's. They don't give a crap.

SacriliciousBeerSwiller: 2) No, your UPS guys are not special. Your driver may be professional, but at the warehouses your sh*t is getting tossed around and beaten like everyone else's. They don't give a crap.

Then why have I ordered tens of thousands of dollars worth of stuff from Amazon over the last decade and I can't remember anything that has arrived broken or beaten up? Sure I have Prime, but that doesn't come with the magic white glove treatment. Typically everything that comes in a box with its own padding just is tossed into a larger box to keep the items from getting scuffed up, but I have not had any issues. Hell, I've even ordered HDTVs that have arrived in the just the manufacturer's box and they have been fine. Like I said, I don't know what the hell is happening with your last mile, but I simply haven't had issues with electronics being shipped without padding between the inner and outer boxes. With as much as I order for personal and for home use, I would have seen an issue if Amazon was the one at fault here. If I think real hard, I MIGHT be able to come up with an example of a box that was dented on a corner.

I'll give you the current library isn't all that great, but the games that are out are pretty fun.  I haven't gotten too far into KZ yet, but Knack is much better than reviewers give it credit for.  It's not something your "hardcore" gamer will appreciate, but if you liked games like Spyro, you'll like Knack.

Rezogun is fun too, I haven't tried Contrast yet, but I've only heard good things.

And Warframe, for a free to play FPS, is pretty damn fun.  I know it's available on PC as well, but I love the DS4 and the swiping to use abilities.  My ass groove in my couch has never been deeper.

I hated the PS3 controller, The X-box controller is far superior in my opinion. With that, I'd like to play with the new PS4 controller,  it looks like they've actually put the analog sticks far enough apart where your fingers won't bump, if they upped the tension in them, they'd have something.

So 91 bricked consoles out of more than 500,000 sold on launch weekend.  That's a damn good QA level.  As for flooding Amazon reviews with negative ratings, it only takes a handful of assholes with multiple accounts to do that.  I wonder how many of those negative reviews were made on accounts that have zero purchase history?

Most of the bad reviews are verified by Amazon (which you cannot fake), meaning they bought it and were upset it isn't working.

The RROD issues took a while to be realized and the blue light issue is happening now and its been verified at GameStop, Sony stores, Best Buy and Amazon. Its highly unlikely that a port that is recessed is going to cause this issue from bad packaging. Especially since the PS4 is tightly packaged in the Sony Box.

A lot of these issues happened after the firmware update, hell Sony is even blaming your TV. They were not prepared for this and the still hour long wait proves this.

This is also exactly how the RROD started

I tend to agree with you.  However, I do think that the 1st gen 60GB PS3 was a worthwhile purchase because of all the extra things they removed in later versions, not least of which was the PS2 compatibility.  Plus, they did have excellent reliability, especially if you took it apart after a few years, removed the heat sinks and applied high quality thermal compound.

Ok let me do some maths for you.  You don't list your State so I'll put my state's sales tax into the equation (6%).

$530 for the unit, you sell it for $785, eBay and Paypal will take $118 from you, so you made "only" $130.  I know it's very little involved but you did not make $285.  Would have been better to sell on craigslist and not dealt with fees.
