/of course, now that somebody else has done it, they WILL "think" of it.

With a million consoles sold I'd be surprised if we didn't hear about a few thousands problems. The demographic that buys consoles on day one is the same demographic that will whine about it online if anything goes wrong.

Only a moran would try to cancel their pre-order, subby.  My Xbox One pre-order just sold this morning for $785.  No, it wasn't packaged with a game, it was just a day one console grossing me $285 for doing nothing more than listing it on eBay and changing the "ship to" address on Amazon.

/My PS4 pre-order sale only grossed me $210

welcome to old news, most of those 1 star reviews are actually verified purchases apparently, Amazon shipped a bunch of PS4's with awful packaging and it sounds like a few hundred got damaged in the shipping process and arrived DOA

there's also the real problem of a batch of rubber used for the DS4's thumbsticks wasn't properly cured and are falling apart, and some games with in-game updates locking the console if you switch to the OS

but hey, it's a console launch, this shiat has happened with every one of them

Yup, math is hard. People in general have a hard time visualizing big numbers, so it's easy for them to see that 500+ one star reviews means they have a 90% failure rate or something. That 0.04% failure rate Sony quoted out of a million sales would be 4k units, which again sounds like a lot but it really isn't. Not that I don't feel bad for anyone who got a bad one, but with that many sales it's going to happen to someone.

This is one of the many reasons why I'm a late adopter for all new technology. Early adopters are the beta testers, and I appreciate all they do for the rest of us who don't need the newest shiny gadget on day one. They are on the front lines, fighting the customer service battles so we don't have to. Whether it is a TV, console, phone, or any other electronic device, I am so grateful that I have these early adopters around to help refine the product. That way, when I finally do get one, all the issues have been worked out, it's cheaper, faster, smaller, more durable, and much, much better than the ones they first bought. So I salute you early adopters.

An interesting note about that 0.4% rate that Sony claimed is that they noted that BEFORE the console was released. It was based on the failures of consoles that people got early vs all shipped units

Do we know what the sample size they used to arrive at that number? I know there were quite a few out in the wild, but not how many exactly. This fact also lends credence that it could be a problem caused by shipping, as AdamK stated.

If you assume that the reddit reporting rate = the console failure rate... but that's a pretty dumb assumption.

I mean, every console is gonna have problems out of the gate, it's kind of the nature of mass releases.

Right there with you. With console updates I like to stay at least a year behind the curve, if not more. Particularly since a company like Sony is almost guaranteed to release a PS4 Slim or whatever they'll call it a little down the road. It helps to not be a0 "must have the best new game now because the next best new game is coming soon" type of gamer.

Hell, if my PS3 holds together I may just skip this generation entirely. I've got a hell of a backlog of good PS3 games to play.

For game consoles it usually takes at least a year for the library of games to stop sucking anyway. So it's not like you're really missing out on much if you wait either. The PS4 launch has been particularly lack luster. You have Killzone (Seems good but I'm kind of burned out on the fps genre), Knack (which is getting hammered by reviewers), and Rezogun which looks interesting, but not $400 worth of interesting.

i don't completely mind early adoption so long as i'm not spending money to replace things

what inevitably puts me off is the software experience, games are always a crapshoot and "library starvation" pushes you into buying games you probably would rather forget about... the firmware/ui/service/store side of everything is also always in flux early on and rarely without fault

BUT just waiting a year and it's like a no brainer, the product is so much better and all you had to do is have patience

2013-11-17 06:55:29 PM
I'm just going to wait until it is bundled for free with a switch on Newegg.

/that's how I got my PS3

2013-11-17 06:58:12 PM
and this is exactly why i almost never buy at launch for a console as by the time i do the initial kinks are by in large worked out.

The only console i bought at launch was a gamecube and it was damn near invincible, hauled all over the place with no issues.

I'm guessing people that submit fake failure reports about their "rival" are lacking in many things, including patience.

Good thing the best console title ever just came out for the 360, which i just purchased.  i also have a 7  year backlog of great games that will soon be available in the bargain bin.

muahahah!

Actually .4% is a pretty bad failure rate for manufacturing and certainly for consoles. Not that it bothers me at all since neither console interests me.
