Only 44 passengers on a 737? Damn, that's one empty flight.

The Tatarstan airlines flight...

That's a thing? A place? I can't help but wonder if the plane was covered in different colored house paint and maybe some stucco.

Where'd they bury the survivors?

737 considered a regional? what a country!

The son of the president of the oil-rich province of Tatarstan and the regional head of the FSB intelligence service were named among those killed when the plane exploded in a ball of fire on hitting the runway.

Why do I feel there will be more to this story of why this plane crashed than simple repair neglect?

Boeing built special 747s for Japan for regional service...

It was landing on a second go-around.  If you're going to go to that level of detail to fake a mechanical problem that well (instrumentation, etc.) it would be cheaper to kill the guy in a car crash.

It's the airline not the plane with that designation.  Approx. 10 planes total for the airline and based in a regional capital rather than a national capital.

Eyewitnesses report a missile being fired from the grassy knoll adjacent to the airport.
A small group of Orthodox Ukrainians has been observed dancing near that knoll.

"Russia has seen a string of deadly crashes in recent years. Some have been blamed on the use of aging aircraft, but industry experts point to a number of other problems, including poor crew training, crumbling airports, lax government controls and widespread neglect of safety in the pursuit of profits."

Yeah, but...but...but...FREEDUMB!!

I fly into Kazan periodically. My wife hates it when I fly domestically in Russia, especially after the time a couple of years ago when I landed in Domodedovo in Moscow 2 hours after a bomb went off that killed about 40 people. If I'm smart, I won't mention this crash...

For those who are wondering, Tatarstan is the name of the province, and the airline is the local one hence the name.

My initial thoughts beyond RIP....

1) With a terrible airline safety record, how did they secure the Olympic bid?

2) If they don't maintain their airplanes, how can the US depend on Russia for transportation to and from the ISS?

3) Could be something fishy going on but with the safety record, its a toss up.

And yes, I need to hand in my Voyager card....didnt even think about that. Well done sprgrss

All whole province named after a sauce used for dipping fish sticks?

So I'm hearing something about how the plan that crashed was originally offered to a Ugandan airline. When they turned it down, these clowns got it. I'll be back with a link when I find a credible (or English) source.

No, you're thinking of raw chopped beef.  The fish sticks are dipped into GrumpyCat sauce.

The less common air travel is to a region, the greater the probability that someone notable is on any given flight in that region.
