As a point of pride during the campaign, he said he'd never been to Washington.

This bugs the hell out of me.  The problems we're having now in Washington are precisely because the 'baggers who were elected because they were not beltway politicians simply have no idea or concern about how government actually functions.  And despite being at odd with the teahadists, I'm sure Celebrity McFunnybeard will be equally inept.

The Tea Party folks should be FAR more concerned over this election that the Cuccinelli mess in Virginia. This time around, their guy was an incumbent, well-financed, supported by both the GOP establishment AND the Tea Party... and still lost. In Louisiana.

For the GOP to regain any semblance of influence, however, this is the path they need to take. The question is, are there enough non-Tea Party candidates out there who don't see "compromise" as the same as "abject surrender" to make a difference in the party?

Oh, and it never hurts to get celebrity endorsements from non-crazy entertainers, like the Duck Dynasty clan instead of Ted Nugent or Victoria Jackson.

Over the last couple of years, I've watched the "educational" programming on the second-tier of cable service that I pay for each month gradually replaced with sh*t like this. I'm relocating into my own place in a couple of months, and I will be switching to Dish.

Next thing you're going to tell me is that you won't choose lawyers who don't have any idea of how this fancy law system works, they just want to get things done.  Or maybe you steer clear of surgeons who have never seen the inside of an operating room but who have a lot of ideas of how to get inside and "just get things done".  How will we ever have any progress if you keep in those deadset librul ways.

I'm encouraged by this vote, more conservative than I'm comfortable with (abortion, gun rights)' but reason and compromise won over talking points and unrealistic talking points.

Good job Louisiana.

Also Duck Dynasty is ok. Too scripted IMO but fun to watch once in a while

I am indifferent towards "Duck Dynasty". Living in Alabama naturally I am exposed to their fans and their various endorsed products in stores. Merchandising wise they are the redneck version of KISS. Their popularity? I can only explain it as other people clinging to "celebrities" they feel are like themselves and somehow it will make them more popular or accepted.

I do like the fact they supported the less "derpy" of the candidates. The extreme "derpers" have been trying to hijack the show's message in order to get more support for their extreme agenda. Kind of like they did with that veterans' protest in Washington DC. It appears that the Duck Dynasty folks do not want to go all "Ted Nugent/Victoria Jackson" crazy, which is refreshingly nice.

I've never actually seen the show but I'll take a stab at it.

Similar to the garage/grudge rock anti-movement that sprang up against the commercial rock and pop scene, Duck dynasty represents a counter cultural movement against the overly hyped reality shows about "beautiful people" having "beautiful people" problems.  The duck dynasty culture- love 'em or hate' em-- are more part of our everyday life than a glamorous bride seeking a playboy husband, or an incredible wealthy bimbo trying to arrange for a plumber to install a new circulating pump in the Jacuzzi.   So, regardless of their banal, ignorant doings, they are part of us and are easier to warm up to.

I can only imagine that if you're currently using part of that unemployment check to help augment those tuition payments on that 50k bill you ran up pursuing a liberal studies degree, watching a bunch of filthy rich uneducated- and presumably high school drop-out-- hillbillies achieving levels of both recognition and financial success that will elude a great majority of the rest of us, this show would probably have a very low rating on the appeal scale.

So, I just got back to the United States after a three year duty station in Spain.  We lived out in town, and elected to not get AFN, so I've been kind of cut off to casual exposure to American pop culture.  We'd hear the occasional new song on the radio version of AFN and of course I had the internet so I knew some stuff.  But I only really saw anything in depth that I went out of my way to see, but never how truly prolific anything is in the general culture.

So, I knew ABOUT this Duck Dynasty phenomenon.  I knew it was a reality show, I knew they were actually quite bigoted assholes (thanks to a link here on Fark) and I knew they were  basically the Beverly Hillbillies come to life.  But I figured it was along the same lines as Honey Boo Boo, a morbid curiosity and guilty pleasure for people.

Imagine my surprise when I showed up on American shores and got down to our new station in North Carolina, and found out that these crazy bastards are everywhere.  I went to Bed, Bath, and Beyond and found out they are selling welcome mats, both normal and holiday themes ("Duck the Halls.  Get it?).  I went to the grocery store and it turns out they have their own brand of beef jerky and beer.  Halloween was a few days after we moved into our new house, and every sixth costume was a gigantic beard and head bandanna combo.  Thanks to the Hollywood Babble On podcast, I found out they have a farking Christmas album coming out where one of them speaks classic holiday poems and songs in a redneck sing song voice while making bad duck-based puns.

What the hell, America?

I'm starting to think that Sarah Palin's rise in popularity as a counter-culture icon in the world of politics not to dissimilar from the dub-step movement and Duck Dynasty cultural movements we are experiencing as of late.

In Sarah's case, President Obama won out as being just a little more edgy and controversial.

You read my mind.  Electing these "Washington outsiders" is kind of the reason we are in this mess.  Of course maybe the type of "Washington outsiders" elected has a lot to do with it also.  I will use your surgeon example for an analogy.  If the surgeon despite no surgical experience had finished all their schooling, residencies, observed first hand experienced surgeons in action, and fully understood the whole "process"; you still have pretty good odds of surviving.  But the Tea Party folks who were billed as "Washington outsiders" are the medical equivalent of snake oil salesmen of the old west; who think that blood letting is a cure all for everything, while distracting you with opium laced elixirs so you don't notice you are bleeding to death.
