Yep, insurance is a reality and causes all kinds of silly things like this. You wouldn't believe the silly rules and paperwork that Girl & Biy Scouts have to follow these days.

The Massachusetts parks department refused to accept volunteer help unless the volunteers paid for an insurance policy. The legislature passed a law saying they couldn't refuse volunteers for lack of insurance.

Well if he insisted on driving I agree. Don't want him plowing through the crowd.

Insurance is the culprit.

I guess that is a root cause for many of the west's stupid laws and default behavior.
No one thinks anymore, they just follow down the path private companies make for them.

Not a single mention of Country Kitchen Buffet, I think we're safe.  But thanks for stereotyping.

You would think that he would at least be allowed to march, or ride.

Did he pick up one of his massive steel balls and biatchslap the person with it?

The guy's walking in a parade and is a decorated and national hero. If he can demonstrate that he can do it, let him farking do it, bunch of mewling quims.

/Britain, so nanny state at its finest

It's like the low-brow Daily Mail.

Now every April I sit on my porch
And I watch the parade pass before me.
I see my old comrades, how proudly they march,
Reliving the dreams of past glory.
I see the old men, all twisted and torn,
The forgotten heroes of a forgotten war.
And the young people ask, "What are they marching for?"
And I ask myself the same question.

Coming to a theater veteran's day parade near you!

/ if they can't walk; somebody gas up a deuce and a half, so they can still be in the parade

And insurance is full retard like that because of unscrupulous lawyers. I say first thing we do let's kill all the lawyers.

"I said I was still fit and able, but they said it's because of insurance and that I should have stood down when I was 85."

He added: "It hit me like a ton of bricks."

I think it depends on what type of insurance we are talking about.

Well, I can still walk a golf course. So there's that.

I'm going to say the whole story isn't being told here and the guy has ignored more than a few gentle hits to retire before he embarrasses himself and the organization he represents.

It's hard getting old and accepting the fact that you just can't do the things you used too without making an ass of yourself.

My sentiments which don''t count, as well, on all 3 counts. Heavenly Days, he's only 89!!

Those quotation buttons don't work on my phone either.  That looks like that took a lot of time.  Good on you!

The proper way to have gone about this is to have promoted him to Supreme Grand Marshal for Life. He then would feature prominently in the parade riding proudly in a decked out car or on top of a tank or something.

2013-11-16 03:15:02 PM
In fairness, a veteran's parade is a parade for only one veteran.

How hard is it to walk slowly down a street? Unless leading a parade has some other skills or requirements.

Yeah, people should just shoot themselves at 60 and move out of the way cause, I mean, do they even still need money at that age?  It's OUR turn to suck off billionaires for a pittance!  *tsk*  Dang old people being all old, and sh*t.  *snort*

There may be a fancy stick.  And those hats probably weigh a lot.

I'll bet some 80 year old wippersnapper veteran had a grandkid at the insurance company and an eye on the Marshall's position. Conspiracy!!!1!

He should just appear and participate in the parade anyway. What are they going to do, use force to stop him?  Have him bring some friends and supporters to protect him from the safety officers.

"Sometimes old people don't know when to quit and preserve their dignity"

It was called World War II. Their dignity shall remain in tact long LONG after that of some sniveling child on the internet.

If you are a World War II vet in your 20s or 30s, the Royal British Legion has a fantastic new opportunity for you!

2013-11-16 06:46:30 PM
Did you all notice that there is nothing to stop him walking in the parade? He's just been told that insurers won't accept a marshall (ie responsible official) of that age.

2013-11-16 07:01:35 PM
They shouldn't be able to  discriminate based on age and walk away clean. Either prove there's a duty he can't physically perform or assist him to make it safer. The guy fought in a war most of us weren't even around for. He's proven he's tougher than the paper pushers knocking him down.

2013-11-16 07:04:02 PM
If you can't have the guy marching stick in a nice safe vintage war vehicle, a WWII  era jeep would do nicely.

Seriously they need to evaluate each person individually as just because someone is said age does not guarantee a certain level of fitness.

Have the old fellow given a physical if he passes it let him keep his position.
