Whats more dumb is that in order for war to be a political tool of any use, people HAVE to die. Otherwise, it's just a really expensive game of Battlebots. You might as well play a game of chess to settle stuff.

I, for one, welcome our robot overlords.

Our "Battlebots" will be killing their people, their "Battlebots" will be killing our people, so it all works out in the end.

We don't use drone strike to kill other drones.

And the really great news is that the bots will all be run by private contractors yet paid for with your tax money.

The wars of the future will not be fought on the battlefield or at sea. They will be fought in space, or possibly on top of a very tall mountain. In either case, most of the actual fighting will be done by small robots. And as you go forth today remember always your duty is clear: To build and maintain those robots.

Yeah, drones killing other drones would be wasteful and pointless.

I've always watched The Matrix as a sequel to the Terminator movies.

/also, for kicks, I pretend the John Connor in the movies isn't THE John Connor, just a distraction set-up by the actual John Connor.
//Sarah Connor is one of my favorite heroines. SO hardcore.

"Kind-hearted people might of course think there was some ingenious way to disarm or defeat the enemy without too much bloodshed, and might imagine this is the true goal of the art of war. Pleasant as it sounds, it is a fallacy that must be exposed: War is such a dangerous business that mistakes that come from kindness are the very worst." Carl von Clausewitz

I joined the Army at the worst possible time to join the Army. No robots, shine your boots daily, hadn't been a war in over 10 years so everyone wanted to be parade ready the whole time, bullshiat assignment after bullshiat assignment...

As General Patton said, "No poor dumb sonuvab*tch ever won a war by dying for his country.  He won it by making some other poor dumb sonuvab*tch die for his."

If this technology means fewer of our poor dumb sonuvab*tches dying for our country, and more of our enemies' poor dumb sonuvab*tches dying for theirs, then we should all be supporting it.

FTFA:  But they will also make war even more horrible by taking away the human life loss component. If we can send platoons made of robots to war, people will not fear death in wars.

Do you even think before you write this crap, or do you just re-hash Star Trek reruns? The platoons of robots will not be sent to kill other robots, you idiot, they will be sent to kill people.

That's fine, so long as we're not spending hundreds of billions of dollars getting our enemies to die for our corporations. We need to pull our military back, get trained and equipped to defend our nation against a real enemy nation and stop fiddle-farking around in Afghanistan for no reason.

Of course now our soldiers are coincidentally very well trained and equipped to put down a citizen uprising. Can't imagine how that might be used in the next few decades.

One of America's greatest military strengths is that we actually have a large number of hardened, combat experienced troops and combat tested equipment.  Its one of the main reasons the US military is always active  somewhere, whether its killing Iraqi's, South American drug lords, Somalis, Afghans, whatever.

We  know how our gear works in actual combat, and our troops have experience killing actual people with it.  Most other nations military exist only on drills and war games.   It is not the same thing.

Our military brass knows this.  Believe it or not, they're actually pretty good at what they do...

Yeah. I'm in Afghanistan for the third time right now. I've used that gear. I've fired rounds at people.

That doesn't make it right or just. And it certainly isn't worth the pricetag. Our nation is bankrupt, and for what? So Hamid's buddies can get rich? So KBR and Fluor can get rich? We're shutting down bases and COPs here and leaving hundreds of millions of dollars in gear behind to get picked through by local nationals. Vehicles, office furniture, generators, computers, HVAC gear, stacks of building supplies, etc. America is bleeding out financially, and a lot of that money is ending up here. And over a decade later, we have almost nothing to show for it. Except now yes, like you said, we're really really good at detecting and counteracting IEDs, cataloging an entire population with biometrics, suppressing uprisings, and conducting raids.

Was it worth it? No. I don't think it was. Not at the cost that America has paid. And will continue to pay long after we're all dead.
